Dylan,
I move from the Sacramento valley 2 years ago. I would stop by the Fisherman’s Warehouse in Sacramento on Folsom street and ask for Alan he may be able to help you.
I think that Raymond Adams is from the Sacramento area you might check with him, look for him on this forum.

Tom,
Did you fine out any more information on the photo of the rod builder?
You mention that the work might have been commissioned by Fenwick in the mid 1970’s and the art work was not by Norman Rockwell.
I have looked on the web for that photo and other older rod building photos but no luck.

Chris,
Maybe try a piece of tubing. Split the tubing open then slip it over and around the edge of the rod holder. There are many different sizes and colors of tubing. You may need to use a little epoxy to hold it on the rod holder or if you don’t want to use epoxy you might try double sided tape.

Steve,
I went to the local home improvement store and purchase 8’ counter tops and some 30 inch 2 door storage organizers for the base.
I have some photos of my shop on the photo page.
The RodMaker Magazine had an article on a rod shop with good info and photos. I think it was volume 9 – Issue 4 but not for sure.

I think we all have broken blanks at one time or another.
It is not the method, as Tom mention more than likely the blank had a nick or defect of some kind.
I always check and flex all blank as soon as they come in so then I can contact the supplier if I have a problem.
Just be thankful that it occur now and not after you have finished the rod.

Billy,
After the epoxy is done mixing I use a pocket screw driver with a small magnet in the end to remove the ball bearing from the epoxy. I let the epoxy drip once then put the ball bearing in a mixing cup with a little alcohol then put the cup back on the mixer and let the mixer run for a few minutes. Then remove the ball bearing with the pocket screw driver magnet. I have a magnet mounted on

John,
Same idea but made from PVC 1†pipe. (Love that PVC pipe)
I cut a 1†PVC pipe about 7†long then cut two ½†fingers about 3 ½†long and 180 degrees from each other then put a little duct tape on the fingers to protect the handle. I also put piece of cork in the end of the pipe so it will mount easier in the dryer or lathe.
I posted a picture in the tools section.

John,
I’m not sure who has the rubber bands you’re looking for but I use surgical tubing.
Most of the time you can find the tubing at your local tackle shop if not check with the sponsors at the left.

I know that Batson has this type of hook keeper available for their vendors. I sent them some of these 3 to 4 years ago.
I have been making this type of hook keeper for a long time and never seen anything like them until Kistler. But that makes no difference I am not trying to copy anyone’s product.
My intention was only to share some information.

Drop Shot hook keeper
I have had a few people ask me how to make the hook keeper that I have been making for about 7 years, which I use on Drop Shot rods and some Catfish rods. About a year ago I posted some information on this but did not post any pictures at that time. I also sent this design to a couple of manufacturers a few years back to see if they would produce them.

I found a photo by John O’Sullivan in a 2003 RodCrafters Journal of a mummified cat with a split diamonds and other geometric wraps. I did a quick search and found a few more photos.
As John mention in the Journal- It sort of makes you humble, doesn’t it? Our patterns aren’t so very new, after all.
Just think the Egyptians didn’t have Billy’s book either.

When I was at the Expo in February I bought some ThreadMaster Ultimate Gel-5 (5 minute epoxy) and have been using it in different applications.
Andy, I personally think you hit a home run with this epoxy adhesive.
Great job!

Gerald,
Look up in the left corner of this page and click on FAQs and read question and answers 2 through 5 that explain about the spine better than I can. You can also go to the top of the message board and click on search and type in spine.
Hope this helps.

Bill,
I wrap up to the tip top not over because if you ever need to remove the tip you will not destroy your wrap.
The tip should not come off if you prepare blank tip and tip top properly and use some tip adhesive or epoxy. (You still may need to replace the tip because of customer abuses)
Wrapping the tip is tough sometimes, but I made a tip holder for my wrapper that works ok and makes it a

Chris,
I also use reamers I made 5 or 6 years ago that I can use on a drill, they work well. As Randy said ream the reel seat slow and check the fit offend and you will probably need to clean and dress up where the blank is exposed through the reel seat.
A word of experience, if you use a reamer with some type of grit always check and clean reel seat out before sliding it over the blank wh

Barry is right there is a mold by Do-It molds that has 6 different diameters of weight to fit inside the butt of the blank.
There are three great articles in RodMaker Magazine Volume 6 – Issue #6 on balancing rods that has a lot of information and also has the part # for the mold.

I’m sure that it won’t stay clean long like I said earlier my wife and I clean all day Sunday.
I can wrap rods up 11 foot like the benches are now. The benches are not permanently mounted to the floor so they can be moved for longer rods.
To be honest there is not a lot of calls for surf rods here in Kentucky!

148. New Shop
When my wife and I moved from Northern California to Kentucky over a year ago, we built a house and I was very fortunate to be able to build a detached garage for a boat and for rod building.
I posted some pictures of my shop, wrapping room and office. There is still work to do on the shop, but I will work on it between building rods.
The wife said that I had to clean every thing up before I c
