Tom, being relatively new to rod building I would really like to get all this information you're offering. To ensure that I'm able to get a copy, may I include a blank CD and slimline CD case along with my payment? It'll be in todays mail.
Thank you very much.

332. Re: Cutting a blank
Just a thought but if he cut 6" from each end would that mitigate at least some of the power loss and action loss? I've never tried it but it might serve the purpose...

Never used that product before. I understand it is a marine grade finish but does it provide a deep gloss finish or more of a matte type finish, ala Tru-Oil when used on wood?
Thanks,

Hi all,
Like many of us I've been toying with use of decals. See .
The next challenge I came up with was to create a "wrap", much like you'd see on bass boats, trucks, etc. I turned a plain piece of pine into a crappie rod handle using care to ensure that it was cylindrical. I figured it would more easily accept the decal without air pockets. I used a close-up image of a crapp

Hey all,
I'd like to find some white guides for my next build. I've been doing some searching but no luck thus far. I'm painting a Forecast RX7 IP840 crappie rod white and didn't want to use the black guides. I guess I could use a chrome or brushed metal type of color but first wanted to check on the availability of white guides. I remember seeing something about powder coating or painting

When I printed the decal on this link I simply wrapped the rod in gold thread and printed the label with a black background and white letters. Since I used clear decal paper the white letters are transparent and the gold thread shows through.
Hope this helps.

I've only been building for a year, so I'm still learning, but I mix my epoxy in a clear shot glass with a flat blade with little regard to bubbles forming. After a few minutes of mixing when the epoxy is very clear I scrape it out onto tin foil. I let it sit on the foil a minute to "settle" then I use a plastic tube, about the size of a straw, to blow out the majority of the remainin

I turned a Cocobolo handle as well as a Black Palm handle last year. Just before applying the finish they need to be wiped down with denatured alcohol (I think that's what I used). Then apply your finish. I used Classic Rod Coat epoxy.
Be sure to apply your finish soon after wiping down so the wood doesn't have a chance to excrete any more oil. Once your first coat of finish is dry you s

I recently built my first spining rod using the NCG method. I located the choker guide using the reel upsweep method. (I discovered the 27x concept to late.)
Is there a documented process that a builder can use to place guides on a casting rod? I'm guessing there wouldn't be any, or as much, line taming as with a spinning reel so how does one go about deciding the optimal placement of the

Hi Jerry,
This has been a hot topic on the forum lately. The process has evolved somewhat since the material you're refering to was printed. I think it's safe to say that rather than using the table edge method to locate the choker guide(refered to as the intersection guide also...) you'll want to use the 27X method of locating the choker guide. I won't get into details of describing that

343. Re: Help with NGC
Does the term "choker guide" refer to the same guide termed "intersection guide" in the NEW GUIDE CONCEPT PRIMER in the library. Based upon everything I've been trying to learn on the concept I believe it is but I'd just like to verify.
Thanks,

344. Re: Drying chuck
I have a similar setup but instead of neoprene I cut the bottom out of a foam "huggie" can cooler. (Think beer...) Usually the bottom has a small hole so I used a knife and cut an "X" larger than the hole but centered on the hole. This allows the rod handle to be inserted without tearing the foam.
Same concept just a different way of getting there. If I had thought of i

346. Re: Snake Skin
I'd also be interested in viewing the tutorial you mentioned above. Could I kindly ask you to email that to me also? I'm in the beginning stages of designing a custom rod for
my father for next Fathers Day. He gets out hunting to western North Dakota each fall. He had some snaky encounters this past trip. I think it would be neat if I could incorporate
a snake skin into this particular rod

Tried the syringe approach for the first time yesterday and was very pleased. The pharmacist at our local Walgreens gave me two for free. They are plastic, and I believe non-silicone, but the unique feature they come with an insert with a hole on top. All you do is push an insert into each bottle of finish and hardener. No drilling in the caps is necessary.
I had a hard time finding free c

349. painting question
I'm in the process of refurbishing a fiberglass stick. It's a 6 1/2' Cabelas eGlass baitcasting rod that had brown paint on it. I've turned walnut fore and butt grips and I'm planning on mounting the guides in the spiral fashion. I'm going to try my hand at weaving just above the fore grip. I received Doc Ski's videos and James Upton's great weaving book so I'm now very inspired. This one wi

Hi Jim, I'm just getting interested in thread weaving and am trying to absorb as much information as possible. Is your book presented in a way that goes hand-in-hand with using the Wonder Weaver or does it present ways of weaving using other methods?
Thanks very much and I look forward to your reply,

Just did this yesterday while refurbing an older rod of mine. I removed the reel seat will a Dremmel tool using one of thier cutting wheels. I cut a line down the length of the reel seat being careful not to cut to deeply and into the rod blank. Once a line or two are cut then insert a standard screwdriver, the wider the tip the better, into the line that was cut and carefully twist the screwd

Thanks Jim,
I ran down to Albert Lea to Root River Hardwoods and they had just what I was looking for. Even picked up some Butternut while I was there!
Thanks for the tip.

353. Eastern Red Cedar
I'd like to turn wooden handles using Eastern Red Cedar. I guess it's also known as aromatic cedar. I'm having trouble finding a source local to the Minneapolis area. Do any of you have any leads I might be able to follow ?
In advance,
Thanks
