Gee Dave....I thought I was the only one chatting with Ray through MSN on a daily basis. His jokes keep me sane and his advice keeps me wrapping rods. I would like to add Cliff Hall to the general list as well. For nothing less than remembering who I am and emailing me the single most detailed reply to an emailed inquiry I HAVE EVER RECEIVED. He is not just a math go.....he is damn tho

Hope this does not sound stupid Tom, but is it $39.99 per volume set or $39.99 for the set of volumes?

Somebody needs to send Larry Dahlberg and Tred Barta BOTH some custom spiral wrapped rods so they do not have to be such "Factory" victims.

Consider yourself lucky you have a source for the C&C nylon in the larger diameters....I can't find the stuff locally for the life of me. For wrapping lighter rods the Coates & Clark TRILOBAL polyester thread per the manufacturer is NOT supposed to contain lubricants that may cause epoxy issues. I would still use CP however if you want to retial spool color. The heavier Nylon would w

Ditto on the Aloe Vera Gel.....Don't have dry, cracked and bleeding hands in the winter.....My problem is my SCALP. Makes brushing your hair in the morning VERY interesting. My father has diabetic hand and uses a product that he swears by but for the life of me I can't remember the name of the stuff and I BUY IT FOR HIM? I work quite a bit with large animals and swear by Bag Balm....But I kno

The PRECISE reason I build rods to give-away and not sell......I make a functional and reasonably attractive rod now.....But I am nowhere near satisfied with the finer points of my "fit and finish" techniques to have the nerve to actually SELL one of my creations. Most of my rod creations so far have been rewraps or rebuilds of blanks from wherever I find them....Heck, I even have bl

I have pretty much exhausted all of my local sources for cord used for grips and I have just not been satisfies with the selection of cord diameters or colors. I have found web sources for soft nylon (no lubricants) thread and cord, but the color selection is limited and you have to purchase much larger spools than I would likely ever need. The braided mason line at the big box stores and hom

I am a NOTORIOUS dumpster diver....That being said, I often protect my table top and my floor using sheet linoleum recovered from the dump at my local home remodeling specialists. I can often get large pieces of new and unused linoleum and epoxy lust flakes right off the flexible surface....AND ITS FREE.

Not to let the cat out of the bag but I have been doing some experimenting with some airbrush techniques and some templates a buddy came up with for me. Not ready to post pics though as I am still in the discovery stage. I WILL say that the possibilities and variations are nearly endless when you combine thread art and airbrush art. Some of the color shifting blanks I have come up with REALLY

I have used Gorilla Glue to glue up wood grips and reelseats to blanks...It works, the foaming can be an issue if you are not careful, and cleanup if you are not careful is a real pain, but I don't react to it. There ARE better products out there, DESIGNED for our hobby, but in all honesty, I had the GG laying around and went for it. The verdict is still out as to how well it will hold up

Another source would be any gunsmith in the area that specializes in custom gunstocks. Going through their scrap pile can be VERY interesting.

Chris I build a 10' steelhead rod just as you described. I did not work for me ass the feel of the rod in the hand was just not right, very top heavy and kept wanting to twist in my grip. I ended up making a handle of cheap cork rings wrapped with bicycle handlebar tape and the rod ended up looking much better and feeling much better. I use plate seats on almost all of my builds from larg

I have used cotton sheets purchased on closeout pretty darn cheap and so far they have held up well. I have also used velvet, flannel, denim, vellux, felt and even canvas. Denim and canvas when washed, preshrunk, and softened are my favorites. Best looking bags were from camo denim (Wally World $3/yd and black canvas $4/yd). I shape my rod socks so the reel can be left on the rods for sto

WHOHOO1!!! Way to go Chris Karp......Another DUNE lover....."Bless the Maker and his Water......" Or something to that effect. Rodbuilding is constantly changing.....A few years ago sewing thread was a no-no, but now names such as Madeira and Sulky are common place. Adhesives and finishes are constantly changing as well. My first wrap job, I coated the thread with 30min epoxy b

I know you can powdercoat stuff at home with nothing more than a toaster over....I have no idea how to even attempt anodizing at home. I have been wanting to powdercoat a bunch of SS DF boat rod guides for a while now. I was thinking about powdercoating the guides and then using a Dremel to buff the powdercoat out of the center of the guide ring. I just have not had the time to play yet.

Chris.....Jetty fishing is almost EXACTLY the same reason I got into rod building as well. That and coastal surf perching. Same jetties BTW. My designs are just a little different though.
