Would it be possible to use a carefully sized spigot ferrule inserted through the butt end to attach a new blank to the handle? If the spigot was made to be a "perfect" fit you could make it permanent with epoxy and cover the area of repair with a decorative wrap? I have been looking at those reclaimed handles on @#$%& myself..................................

I am in the process of building a 10' UL casting rod for my Abu Garcia Black Maxx 1600 reel from a 10' 2-piece 5/6wt fly rod blank. Casting handle, minimal eva grips with a split rear grip configuration. and Fuji green shock ring guides. The running guides will be sz 6 and will be heavy for the blank but they are what I have available right now. The only reason I am proceeding with the build i

I am experimenting with it and so far it works fine for darker threads but in my opinion it is not so hot with the lighter colors. As Tom said....It takes quite a few coats and I don't see myself continuing its use once I run out because the products that are designed for rodbuilding just make more sence even if they are a little less convenient to get your hands on.

I am working on a couple of surf rods where I plan to do open fade wraps with cord. Should work fine if you use the right diameter of cord for the job.

My BIGGEST goof up.........one I keep doing over and over.....I forgetting about the twice damned winding checks. It must be some sort of strange mental block or something. Time for me to learn how to do epoxy ramps I guess.

Flex Coat....Darkens about 1 1/2 shades.......Some dilute the 1st coat, some do not Future Floor Acrylic...Darkens 2 - 2 1/2 shades.........Same viscosity every time Gudebrod 811...Darkens 1 1/2 to 2 shades but........ I actually use Gorilla Glue regularly, and with CAREFUL and CONTINUOUS attention during the drying process it will work fine. Main reason I use it is I don't seem to have any reaction to it physically which tends to limit my options at times. I like the expanding characteristics when gluing up reel seats and as of yet have had no problems with using it to mount grips. Any rebuilds will be a ni

Permagloss has a VERY hot solvent and may not work with some paints. I always test a paint/clearcoat on a piece of scrap blank first. Some automotive paints also require a heat cure to set properly and that may not be a good idea with most blanks.

It has be sprayed...Others have done it.....I have not......I would have to worry about the safety of such a thing (ventilation and ignition sources) and the fact that Permagloss is such a fast drying product you will likely not be able to save the airbrush without some sort of SERIOUS solvent. Airbrushing blanks opens up a whole new work of possibilities, especially with the larger blanks. P

This same thing has unfortunately has happened with nearly all of the rods I have painted to some degree or another until I started using automotive grade paint and an airbrush. The finish is then baked CAREFULLY in a hot box at about 180 degrees. The only process that has been reliable for me so far. Believe me when I say I am VERY retentive when it comes to prepping my blanks as well. I fou

William....Check out your local dump....I am not kidding. I filled up the trunk of my car this Sunday with rods from the local dump and they were so happy to get rid of them I did not have to pay for them. I build quite a few give away rods myself and will get a BUNCH of perfectly usable rods out of this lot....And 4 working reels.

The secret for me is to do something COMPLETELY different and separate from what is causing the block. I have DOZENS of partially completed rods because I either get stuck in a rut or get another great idea I have to try. My secret is the local shooting range. I used to be a competitive shooter back almost half my lifetime ago. I will take my favorite pistol and a case of ammo and lose myself

Steve...... Your email is hidden! Billy. The mottled color can be good or bad depending on the person I guess. I don't really have a problem with it but I know others do. Yet another reason I build for fun and not for profit, so I can get away with doing it my way. You inspire me BTW....Have a bunch of fancy eva grips to glue and shape this weekend. Mostly simple inlays, but I think

Bicycle handlebar tape works fine and comes in a mind boggling variety of colors....BUT.....They only seem to cut the strips so long so wrapping longer grips can be a problem and most have company symbols or logos impressed into the surface of the tape and that can be a bummer. It is also NOT as resillient (sp?) as the tape meant for rod building. I use it, I also use a variety of the grip tape

I use a Badger 250 Airbrush, a cheap compressor, and airbrush the paint onto my rods. Better coverage with lighter coats. Avoids drips, and/or too thick a coat of paint. I find that multiple very light coats with very slight wet sanding with 1500 grit and cleaning between coats gives a nice uniform finish. LOTS of opinions in the archives on this website as well.
