"Rod Building Guide" has the most detailed instructions on making basic crosswraps that you will ever find. The section on tying off the wrap is exceptional. Each step is matched with a full color photo. You cannot go wrong.

Excellent blog post today. I've found it to be very true. A longer rod for smaller fish really magnifies the fight.

The ferrule alignment marker tool in the latest issue was very clever. But unless I missed something nothing was said about what type paint you should use to load the marking pins. Did I miss something or does it matter?

Wow that's a wide open question! ST. Croix makes a line of Inshore blanks as a specialty. Seeker makes some also. Lamiglas has a selection. There are almost too many to list and all make a quality product. I would start visiting some of the sponsors to the left and kicking around some ideas. If you find a dealer in a location near you then it might pay you to ask what their most popular blank mod

I spoke with both Roger Seiders from Flex Coat and Ralph OQuinn from Trondak at the last Expo event and both told me flat out that humidity would have zero effect on their finishes or the setting and curing times of those finishes. The interesting thing is that Ralph mentioned that humid air is usually hot air so guys often mistake the quicker setting as being a result of high humidity when it is

Anywhere just above where the top of the grip will be located. The grip ID needs to be a little bit smaller than the OD of the blank. It will stretch by a pretty good margin if you install it correctly.

That is not the only rumor they are spreading. Some of their statements are so far off that you wonder if they have ever read a copy of the magazine or done any fact checking! Zero credibility. They are just making stuff up.

25=52mm 20=44mm 16=33mm 12=27mm 10=22mm 8=17 I hope this is close enough. I will not promise it to be 100% exact but should be within a mm. I had to eyeball some I had on a rod against a ruler.

It is hard to believe that with today's machinery and technology that a rock slide could close a major interstate highway for almost a year! But I know that is some pretty darn rugged country through there.

With all due respect, if BOTH guide systems are on the same rod blank, then neither is handicapped any more than the other. I thought the intent was to show the difference between the two guide set ups. You cannot do that if you use two rod blanks. As it is if one beats the other, many will assume the difference was in the rod blanks, not the guide systems.

Mr. Gardener, That's does not matter. If you are hoping to compare the two guide systems then all you need to see is the relative difference between the two. If it degrades performance for one then it degrades the performance for both. So you are still on the same page, which you cannot be with two different rod blanks. I never said anybody was falsifying anything. Sheesh. I suggested a means

I would suggest mounting all guides on the SAME blank, one side for one and one side for the other so any difference will be seen as being due to the guides and not to the use of different blanks. Even blanks of the same model are known to differ quite a bit.

Gents, this has all been great! I never really doubted the 3M rep. It just seems that where rod grips are concerned it is easy to assume that having a textured or non finished surface would make for a better grip than a smooth one. The opposite appears true and after talking to him and reading these replies I can see why. Thanks to all that replied.

Come to think of it, I have never seen a wood hammer handle with a rubber grip on it. ALL the fiberglass ones I have seen have some sort of rubber or foam grip on them. So the stuff about it being there to dampen vibration is my guess as well. But I did not expect to get an education on hammer handles this evening! Thinking more and more about the pebbled surface fly lines................ and

Tom Kirkman Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > There is a reason that wooden hammer handles are > smooth, not textured. Duh! Did not think about that. I guess the 3M guy knew his stuff. Their textured lines do have less friction than their smooth lines and you want the reverse in a grip. This gives me some things to think on. Thanks.

I was talking to a 3M rep at a fishing show last weekend and he got to explaining why the company's new Sharkskin lines cast better and shot easier than their older lines. The old lines were smooth, the Sharkskin lines are pebbled or textured. He claimed that a smooth line even a slick one created more friction than a pebbled line. If you cast one of these lines you would have trouble doubting hi

Can anybody tell me if this blank has an X-Fast tip flex? Is it too much for heavy crankbait bass fishing in open water? Thanks.

It is very easy to get all too caught up in minutia which has no real bearing on what actually takes place in the real world of fishing. Nice to think about but there are other factors that can and do make a real difference. I would concentrate on those and not worry too much about losing energy through guide flex. I do not even think you could test for such a thing due to the fact that you will

There are exterior polyurethanes too. Mine have held up fine so far.

I may get bombarded for this but in my early days I used Polyurethane on guide wraps, about three coats each and they came out looking as good or better than anything I have ever done with epoxy. They are still holding up fine. I only moved to epoxy because I can get by with one coat. Just my two cents worth.

Just guessing maybe a sharpie black permanent market would withstand CP and epoxy. For small patches anyway.
