The entire bottom half of the rod is from a quarter to a half inch in diameter. How flexible is a quarter inch steel rod??? I just have to believe these are made some other way.

That's my point. So how do they withdraw the mandrel from this S shaped rod blank? If the mandrel is made of steel I doubt you can pull it through an S shaped object and not ruin it or the blank.

I can understand that on a rod blank that is straight. But how do you get an S shaped mandrel out of an S shaped rod blank? Looks to me like it would be formed in once the graphite sets and no amount of pulling could get it out.

34. Another question
My mind is racing this morning. Now I see that Pacbay has a new fly rod blank series and shows the CCS numbers for the blanks. So how come they rate a blank with an ERN of 5.5 as a 4wt???

Have any of you had a chance to cast the new Dorber "S" rods? Seriously, is this a joke? The blanks are not straight.....they are actually set into a shallow S shape. I was reading a review in the new FF magazine and the guys there said it excelled on the forward cast, but ended up working against you on the back cast. Sounds reasonable. I just cannot believe that such a blank exists. H

If you just want to know if the 60% rule exists and is valid I can assure you that it does and is. When I got audited a couple years back the agent had never heard of the "60%" rule. He told me I would have to prove it to him. I printed out the article and he took that code and looked it up and did not give me any more guff about the 60% amount I was claiming the liability on. I wonder

On some motors when you start to slide armature out the brushes slip off the contact rotor and will close down on the shaft which might have a collar or something on it. Not sure you just need to try and look inside with a flashlight and see what's getting caught.

Don't think spine is on the bend or curve. Usually off to one side of it.

Just make sure to stay with a real rod building thread for the least amount of trouble and best success. Gudebrod, Fishhawk or the new Prowrap are all good choices that you cannot go wrong with! Not really necessary to use underwraps but if you do go with the smaller A on the bottom and larger C or D on the top. Trying to wrap smaller thread on top of larger thread is difficult to say the least.

Something simple. A cork sliding band seat and cigar grip. Jann's has a good little kit with both for not much money. Should go far in keeping the weight of your rod down.

42. Re: Kite Rod
If you are anywhere near the coast and I assume you are if you plan to build Kite rods, get yourself to any local yard sale and pick up some ratty old Magnaflex rods on the cheap. Any 20, 30 or 50 pound model will work great. Trim from the tip to about 3 or 4 feet. You can strip and redo the rod if you want nice ones, or try to salvage whats already there. I have taken some and managed to use the

44. Type of WC?
I was told by a couple builders that metal or aluminium winding checks were not good to use because they could restrict blank movement or even cut into the blank if the action flexed that far back. They advised using rubber checks or O-rings. Thing I worry about is whether or not the epoxy I use to finish the foregrip trim wrap area is going to stick to that rubber. I would clean it with alcohol

I figured the whole point of registering the blanks for warranty was to build or add to their mailing list. No surprises there. But like others have said if you do not wish your customers to receive mailings from MH, just register the blank under your name and address. After all, you are the one purchasing it from them. If your customer has a warranty issue you would almost surely want him to wor

I do not own a pair of pants that does not have an epoxy spot on them somewhere. Worst of all........... I have a glue apron hanging in the shop in perfect condition. Not a spot of anything on it!

I use Flex Coat. It's very easy to work with and never gives any surprises. The people who own and run the company are consummate professionals, which is not something you can say about all epoxy suppliers.

I bought Visual Weave but have not waded into it so far. But for me access was the key. VW is a sponsor here and they display at the ICRBE so I went with that one. Hope to get around to using it one of these first days.

I assume that scraping the paint or clear coat from the blank tip would be OK? Sometimes this gets you the right fit.

I believe what they sell is Elmers wood paste or putty. Either that or similar products should be about as good as you can get. I do not think any of them will hold up forever.

All of my rods flex mostly in the bottom third once they are heavily loaded. This includes all those which the maker has labeled as "fast action." The tip or upper third straightens out once a solid load is on the rod. The flex moves to the butt end.

Never seen 111. Only 811. And it was milky-clear. Not amber at all. The 111 might be the very old lacquer type. The glass bottle might indicate that it is a lacquer. Couldn't put that in a plastic bottle.

This is an interesting conversation.I have a lot of older rods and some newer bamboo models that all have stiff metal ferrules. I would think these would be the world's worst when it came to having a bad situation just in front or even to the rear of these stiff metal ferrules. But none of mine, knock on wood, have ever broken. In fact going back to my younger days when all two piece rods had sti
