I have an Aftco aluminum reel seat with gold hoods, and in the process of rewrapping this rod.
I would like to know if it is possible to paint and seal the reel seat hoods to match the new color scheme of the rod. Maybe mask them, spray them and put some kind of sealer on them for durability.?
Any input or suggestions are appreciated.
Thank you,
Tom

Hello Rod builders I actually have 2 questions. (1) what is a good spray paint for rods? Mud hole shows " custom rod builders spray paint" it looks a lot like krylon fusion is that it? And question #2 has any one ever wrapped there rod but with the twine mud hole shows along with the new turks knot and if so what's a good way to seal it? Thanks

Got very lucky and aquired 6 St. Croix rods (very cheaply) that aren't quite the way I want them. Thinking of modifiying them just a touch.
1. Color ---If I strip them of eyelets and lightly scruff, wipe down, prime with XIM spray and then a coat of Krylon--- will the paint hold?
2. One of the rods is an 8'6" Legend Elite 2 pc and I would like make it a 7'6" would I mess it up t

66. Blank painting
Hello everyone,
I plan to paint a blank, and I would like to know if someone have ever used Lumiseal or Permagloss as finish, without any problem ?
I have read that Lumiseal and Permagloss have a hot catalysts, and I am afraid by paint unsticking.
I will try to paint and finish the blank in rotation to make a "sheathing" of paint and finish on the blank, for assure a good pain

Just curious if anyone has used the glow in the dark thread on a rod build. I was thinking of doing a shark rod next and was thinking of putting in a few accent wraps of glow in the dark thread. My question is what is the average life of the glow in the dark thread? As my rod will be mostly punished with sunny saltwater conditions during the day and long sandy saltwater beach's at night. I just

71. Which paint?
I have two 10' fiberglass bunkerspoon rods that I am re-building. I stripped off all of the components and sanded off the old finish. I want to paint the rods black and use LumiSeal as the top coat. My question is what kind of paint should I use? I bought a can of DupiColor black trim paint asuming that if it is good for plastics it would offer some flex and I also bought a can of black epoxy pai

72. Painting
I am stripping an 81/2' 4wt rx8+ with an ern of 6.5 I built a few years ago. My builing skills have come along way since then and I wasn't happy with the way it looked plus I wanted to go with single foots on it. I was thinking about painting it with either krylon and a clear or have one of my local auto body shps spray it. I did some searches on the forum and I am wondering will the extra weight

I normally use DNA to clean rod bond from surfaces when installing seats and grips. This particular rod I painted the reel seat with Krylon Fusion and cleared with Krylon Fusion. When I wiped epoxy from surfaces, the finish on the seat dulled. Is there a better clear to use or possibly a different way to wipe excess off. I'm going to fix this one by marbling the reel seat, but I would like to pai

I need a automotive clear single or two part urethane or acrylic I don't care It just has to contain no uv blockers. The reason is I built a rod last year that was uv light reactive, that was until I had it clear coated. I knew it would probably be a problem but I thought I would try it anyways. I want to do another one and find a way to make it work with a quality clear coat. I have already ca

75. Krylon warning
Went to the local Ace Hardware hoping to find some Fixitif (or however it is spelled). Wound up with Krylon "Matte Finish".The label says it "protects arts, crafts, and valuables" which sounds like Fixitif. It supposedly "seals finished painting projects".
THIS STUFF IS EXTRAORDINARILY WORTHLESS AND DANGEROUS.
I had finished a rod, and applied the MHX decal alo

76. Spraying Rods
Hi all,
I'm fairly new to rod building (about a year) but as I have been getting a little better I have been doing more work for other anglers, however at the moment unless the blank is ok I have been stripping it down to bare carbon then sealing it with bonda seal, it does give the rod a nice finish, but more people are asking about getting their rods back to black, blue etc.
Any advice on

Aloha,
I just stripped one of two 13' shore fishing rods and now I need to paint and seal the rods before I begin wrapping. My father has been building rods for the past 40+ years, but this is something new. I recently started wrapping rods and love it. These two shore fishing rodsa belong to my friends father. They are both sabers and are one piece.
I was told that saber only made 10' e-glass

Well through a little more experimentation and thinking about all the comments and e-mails I got about how to keep the edge down I found that the only way so far to keep the edge down was to not do a full wrap with the edge finishing on top of the decal. The edge to rod bond is sound and does not lift (2 decals is all so far) but all the different ways I tried to get an overlap to stay did not

83. Paint repair
Hi
Starting to repair a 20 year old fibreglass 2 piece 12 foot DAM rod, the paint has been scratched and chipped off over the years, what do I need to do to repair/repaint this rod. It has sentimental value to my mate so I told him I would fix it up as best as possible, I have removed the guides and will replace them, can I clean up the rod and paint over it, if so what paint is best for the

I recently started on 2 fly blanks at the same time. I prepped the seats and grips for gluing. Scuffed the finish on rod #1 and then #2. I mixed my glue and applied it to rod #1 and fit the seat and grip. I applied the glue to rod # 2 but the seat wouldn't fit onto the blank. What the heck was going on??? OH NO, I scuffed the wrong end of the blank!!! I could not believe what I had just done.

86. Spar Urethane
Has anyone ever used spar urethane as a finish? I was reading the info on a can of the stuff and it seems as though it might work. I thought I read one time that people once used spar varnish. Is it the same as spar urethane?

Been painting a bunch of blanks lately and have ran into a particular problem a few times. On 2 blanks the paint has been crackling on one axis for about 1ft.. Each blank has been sanded/deglossed and wiped clean (water and cloth) paying attention to keep my oily hands off of the blank. I have resanded each and removed the imperfections wiped clean (water and cloth again) and the problem retu

I was pondering painting a blank white and wanted some input in to how I should go about doing it. I know painting is another issue, but Im hoping your comments will shed some light for me.
