Painting

I am stripping an 81/2' 4wt rx8+ with an ern of 6.5 I built a few years ago. My builing skills have come along way since then and I wasn't happy with the way it looked plus I wanted to go with single foots on it. I was thinking about painting it with either krylon and a clear or have one of my local auto body shps spray it. I did some searches on the forum and I am wondering will the extra weight effect to rod enough to notice?

Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob,
I had quite a few painted by the panel beaters with colour and clears or just clears and haven't noticed any difference. You might end up lighter depending on your guide choice. Most of mine got titanium guides so they are probably a bit ligher than before. They certainly look a lot better.

You might try this if your looking for that finish you can compare to the mass producing folks out there. Not sure if anyone else has given it a try since I last posted this procedure last year. Here is the link with follow up questions answered.

I have bought one of these kits and found it to set fast and was as hard as a rock the next day Could not make a mark in it with my finger nail [www.klasskote.com]

I just tried this stuff on 3 different rods. I'll let you know how it holds up. The customer will be using them in the Classic, so I'm hoping for the best. It's UV protected also.

I just had a St. Croix off shore blank painted by a very good painter at a local body shop. I prepped the rod taking off the factory paint. He did his thing. Came back just fine and if I may so a beautiful white metalic pearl. No weight difference I noticed. Just put color on it and clear coat. I think you might be better off using Dupli color but Krylon Fusion should work. Your choice all the way.

On a 4 wt fly it would be better to strip - wet sand and go with the bare graphite

less weight - better performance Crisper action
