Hello everyone,

I plan to paint a blank, and I would like to know if someone have ever used Lumiseal or Permagloss as finish, without any problem ?

I have read that Lumiseal and Permagloss have a hot catalysts, and I am afraid by paint unsticking.

I will try to paint and finish the blank in rotation to make a "sheathing" of paint and finish on the blank, for assure a good paint adherence and strength.

Do you think my method is good ?

You'll want to test a section first to make sure they won't harm your paint.

I have painted a few rods using mostly Krylon. Permagloss is "hot" and will soften just about any paint. I have found if I paint the blank let it cure for 3 or 4 days. Take a foam brush and cut a slot in it load it heavily with permagloss, put the rod tip in the slot and make one pass to the butt coating the entire rod, then let it hang and cure. The Permagloss will soften the paint but it will cure fast enough the pain t won't move. Let it cure overnight before applying a second coat or trying to touch it up. If you try to touch it up before it cures the paint will move and you will have a mess. do as Tom suggests and try it on a section first.

I painted a blank with Rustoleum and then coated with Flex-Coat. I was pleased with the results and I saw no indication that the paint was softened. I know that wasn't your original question but just throwing that out there for consideration.

I use DupliColor auto spray cans heat them a little - shake well two coats to cover
let dry 5 - 7 days
Then coat with permagloss or LumiSeal

Bill, what is your application method for Permagloss and Lumiseal? I have heard of using a painting sponge, cheesecloth, rubber glove, neoprene etc. A little insight would be great, Thanks!

I have used the paint brush sponge

Went back to Cheese cloth i liked it better and it held more finish
Try them both and see which you like

If using cheesecloth, Don't just open the package and go for it. I did that and covered the freshly painted rod with a thousand little white cheese cloth stubles imbedded in Lumiseal. Had to completly strip and start over. I think someone told me i should have washed the cheesecloth first or something. I used the foam brush technique after that and it worked.

Thanks Bill. This being my first time using Lumiseal I used the sponge method to test the compatibility with my paint. Turned out well but as you mentioned it didn't hold a lot of finish. I am going to try the cheese cloth method next (after I wash it lol). Thanks again!

i cut the size and then fold the edges inward so I don't get loose ends in the finish

Experiment with the size of the cut pieces

I think I will use paint brush sponge, because in France, cheesecloth is not really easy to find, and Jim's event scared me a little ^^


Have you ever tested to apply Lumiseal or PG with a HVLP spray gun (1.5mm fluid tip) after have thinned it ?

I know this tip for wooden arrow shafts (I am also a trad bowhunter ^^), but I have never thought to use it for rod blanks ....... ^^

Hello Franck

A guy by the name of Rick Heil did it with an air brush.
I think you can find it with the search "Spraying U-40 Perma Gloss" and "all dates".

I will test the three methods, spraygun, bottle cap, and paint sponge brush. I think that spraygun will give the results but I could be surprise...

I will try a 2 parts Urethane findable in France, because US customs ask for me 160 US Dollars for carriage of solvent paints or finishes....

maybe over there you can find an auto store and get a small set up of a auto clear These can be thinned so you can spray a thin coat I guess they paint cars there LOL

Just a thought instead of paying to have some thing sent from here
