Would like to build a few quality rods this winter and was hoping to spice things up and was wondering if anyone has any information on where to buy a quality colored or painted blank. Any info would be great - looking for a solid blank.

Following up on Bill Stevens comment in response to my quandry with a camo rod blank, has anyone used Helmsman Spar Urethane (Minwax). If this is like spar varnish, then it might be suitable for outdoor use. Spar varnish however never hardens in my experience at least so it may be too soft to spray on a rod. Also, I am wondering whether it would dissolve any of the camo design. I do not know

I've just tried KRYLON X METALS paint on a fresh blank , WOW ! ! what cool results , it put a thin transparent coating on the blank , that shows up really nice in the light other than that it looks pretty natural (the original dark color) , you can even see the "ribs" in the blank thru the color. I've done two blanks one purple , one red , I am impressed . I top coated the color

OK got some Lumiseal in and did a test last night. The fiberglass blank had 2 coats of Forest green Krylon Fusion on it. Then a Coat a Fusion Clear. Using a foam brush the Lumiseal just caused the finish to crap within 20 seconds and lifted the green paint from the blank. I am thinking perhaps I need to coat with something besides Krylon Fusion Clear. Any Feedback appreciated.

I have a rod that just came off the dryer, and want to put another coat of finish on it, but I used up the last of my finish of that brand on this rod. I have some other brands of finish immediately available though. Would it work out OK if I lay a coat of brand "B" on top of a cured coat of brand "A" to get my new rod on the water sooner? Or would I be best off ordering some

Kind of a noobie problem i guess but here goes. I was given 2 rods by a friend. They are 6 foot boat rods....Navy blue EVA grips fore and aft....white fiberglass blanks. I have 2 little (4 years old each) nephews that want rods so I thought this would be a good, inexpensive way to get them matching rods. I decided to do a red-white-blue scheme for them. I scrubbed up the EVA and it came out

I am building a rod for my wife, and the thread colors are white and Kentucky blue. I am concerned about the white showing up ok, so I am considering using Krylon Fusion for plastic under the wraps and the decorative wrap I am doing. I have the guides placed and I plan to mark where I want my wraps to end, mask everything, and paint. My question is, will it be difficult to determine where to s

hi, wonder if any of you guys have used the above paint for inscribing rods? i finally got myself a drawing pen (dip pen type) but the plaka lack seems fairly thick. i was wondering that since it is a water based paint, could i thin it down with distilled water, and if so, how much should i add..

Hi, I am just about to paint my first rods. I am using the duplicolor car paint for one - which I shouldn't have an issue with. However the other rod will be a pink colour, and I can't find it in the car paint or the Krylon paint here in Australia. There are however hobby paints in both enamel (Tamiya paint spray) and acrylic (paint tin). As the Permagloss is a hot product, what i

I'm new to the forum and rod building. I have one question though, I want a colored blank, and I was told I could paint the blank any color I choose. What paint works the best and will it hold up in tournament fishing. Thanks

Hi, I am preparing to paint a blank for the first time. I painted 2 coast on a broken section of a rod as a tester to see how I would go - luckily. Painting the rod was easy, but I had issues when applying Permagloss. When I applied PG to the painted blank, it started to take the paint off, and you could see the blank underneath! I was using a make up pad to apply the PG. I th

Unsure of what this title of this should be. After some practice wraps with light thread on a black surface i have found the common problem that has been discussed many times on this board "dark background+light thread=changing of thread color" so my question is what is the easiest way to paint the 1' or 1/2 inch location on the blank where the guide wraps will be? i also had this pr

Curious I am building a split grip crankbait rod, and was thinking of adding some color just on the blank in the area between the butt and rear grip. Building on a Baston CB70M, and thought that a little color would look great in this area.. Would you reccomend this or another method. Also love that Carbon Fiber look on some rods, where can you get this? Any ideas or suggestions or instruction

A friend of mine wants some 7' pink rods for his wife's birth day that they will be using a TLD 20 w/ 30lb mono, and pulling dead baits for dolphin, sails etc off the east coast of Florida and bump trolling live baits. He also wants a vertical jigging spinning rod in pink. I have searched all over the place and can't seem to find the blanks needed. What is the best paint and the best way

I've been using U-40 LS Supreme lately wich of course is very thin and fluid. Im having a problem while finishing the base of the rod between wraps at the decal (3 to 3 1/2 inch run). When I apply, it seems to be very uniform (almost pefect). I come back say 15 minutes or so later and on the surface of the decal there seems to be some cupping where the finish seems to have gotten thinner or uneve

Hi All, I searched and found most of my information on this topic, but just want to clarify a few things. I have an old fiberglass rod that I want to rebuild and re-colour for a friend. Do I need to scrap all the old paint off this rod, or can I just sand it to prepare the surface for spraying? I am not worried too much about weight, as this is only a 6' rod and will only be used a f

Actually, a color question. I Thought I would add some Orange (Univ of TN) to a rod I was building for my son - bought CP orange. When I tested it on some scrap, it turned a light oak color after the FlexCoat - very nice color and sheen, but NOT orange. If I use NCP Orange will it retain it's UT Orange color? Second part of the question - I really like the CP Orange (light oak) after the

I’ll be wrapping rods with double foot guides. I’ll have an under wrap with trim bands at each end and one in the middle. I have a few questions for you guys. 1) When laying out your wraps how do you mark the blank? A grease pencil is too wide, a regular pencil won’t show on graphite blanks, and I’m leery of making scratches on graphite blanks. If you don’t mark the blank are y

I have a customer whom wants a rod built from a G Loomis blank for a girl. She wants it purple with silver glitter. Any suggestions on how to prep blank, type of paint, and sealer? Can I use a airbrush painter and mix glitter in paint in first coat, lightly sand it, and apply a second coat of paint, them sealer?

Okay, so I'm following the instructions in RodMaker to the tee with one exception. The only Krylon Clear Acryl that Wally world had was flat and satin. The matte box was empty, guess everybody's making electric labels. Anyway I bought one can of each and made multiple labels to experiment on. After 3 coats of Krylon, either flat or satin, my labels have a white haze on em. Did I use too much

bear with me here, its been a long haul heres the backdrop: I have been working on a recent rod project for the past two weeks, a rainshadow IST1283F rx7 steelhead blank. 10'6" in length with a 8-12lb line rating. The only thing that i have left to do is install the rubberized cork butt plug. I stripped the rods original finish off with citri-strip as described on these forums. I want

Hi again. I´ve been reading alot (understatement) on this board, and i keep running into one general problem: The defenition of rods and their usage :S Here, i find rods for salmon fishing, bass fishing etc etc, but, those defenitions are rather confusing for me. Reason for this, is that here en Denmark, we have a different method of sorting the rod-types: For example, basicly, there

For those of you who have painted blanks - What have you found to be the best top coat (without a spray booth or expensive equipment)? None? Clear coat? Permagloss? Rod finish? Want to keep weight and increase in blank diameter as minimal as possible and also duability - don't need a lot of chipping/flakes. Also... duplicolor (car paint?) vs. the Krylon for plastics (I think that's t
