I'm considering painting a 4 piece fly rod blank with Krylon Fusion followed by a Permagloss clear coat. Any tips as to how to handle the paint transition at the ferrules? John Gaylord Keewaydin Custom Rods Dublin, OH; Naples, FL jgbuckeye@gmail.com Re: Painting 4pc Blank

You can either paint the blank at the ferrules, if space permits, or tape off the blank and only paint up to the ferrules, if space does not permit. You have to make the choice.
Whenever I paint multi piece rods, I prefer to tape off the ferrule area and not paint the bare blank where the blank is joined. You have to make the choice. If you choose to paint the ferrule area, you need to allow for the thickness of the paint and the change that that thickness of paint will affect the rod joint. Take care Roger Re: Painting 4pc Blank

The paint will change the fit of the ferrules. Some multi-piece rods, such as the old GUSA models, were left bare at the ferrule overlap plus about an extra 1/8th inch for wear.
