I have a 9' what appears to be a boat rod, based on the type of guides. its in bad shape, chipped and scratched all over, no breaks into the fiberglass itself that I can see. customer says it belonged to his dad and wants it refinished, getting the guides off was no problem, (amazing what a little heat will do) Now my question or problem is its black but in several areas I am down to what appe

I'm trying to paint a rod blank. I sprayed several coats of black Krylon Fusion then wet sanded. I then tried to brush on U40 Permagloss for a finish coat and got a gloppy, lumpy , uneven mess. The permagloss also seemed to melt the Krylon paint. Any ideas or suggestions?

I've run a search but can't find an answer for this. Do I apply a Testors waterslide or any other decal to a bare clean blank, or do I need a coat of finish on the blank first? The blank is a nicely finished Rainshadow SW967F. Thanks for your help.

This subject has come up many times; I'm either reading it wrong or looking in the wrong place. I tried using Perma Gloss to finish an unfinished blank. It came out very sloppy. What would be the best way to work with Perma Gloss.? Its drying time doesn’t help. Do you put some on a piece of aluminum foil? What type of brush natural bristle, sable, ox hair, and nylon .U-40 says to use a go

Is 2 or 3 coats of this stuff durable as a top coat on an old white fiberglass blank. Do not want to use rod finish due to yellowing later on. Also, how is krylon crystal clear over white? It says non yellowing finish anyone now for sure.

I'm in the process of refurbishing a fiberglass stick. It's a 6 1/2' Cabelas eGlass baitcasting rod that had brown paint on it. I've turned walnut fore and butt grips and I'm planning on mounting the guides in the spiral fashion. I'm going to try my hand at weaving just above the fore grip. I received Doc Ski's videos and James Upton's great weaving book so I'm now very inspired. This one wi

Is it advisable to paint a Forecast matte clear (grey) blank in the underwrap areas before wrapping with a light-colored Madeira Poly Neon #40? If so, is there a recommended paint? I'm about to do a bunch of (13) rods, and this may save me some agony. Thanks

I am planning to use PG on a casting rod that I have finished. I assume I will need more coats than I would use on my UL spin rods so will plan on 6-8 or until a good smooth finish is built up. My problem is that with the approx. 1hr between coats I will have to do this over a couple of evenings. Will the big 18-20 hours between cause a problem, or can do? With the time constraints I really

This post is in reference to one of the answers to the caution w/ extreme camo blanks post. The answer was to use max seal over painted rod blanks. I've never heard of this product before so, I was hoping to get some info on this product. Thanks to John Martines I now know it's a hybrid water based poly but, that's all. So, anymore info would be greatly appreciated because I can't fine any info o

A local hardware store has numerous colors in the hi-vis spray paiint - the really bright colors with some kind of reflective agent build in. I thought it would be good for a bait rod to help a kid watch and see if the tip twitches. Will this type paint work on a surface that flexes like a rod blank? I'm thinking the tip-most 4 to 6 inches.

I'd like to hear a few tips and tricks when it comes to dealing with pastel type colors and getting nice even bright wraps. Colors like bright yellow, light blues give me a fit. What do you guys do to keep them clean, bright, and pretty before or after the wrap? I've used NCP threads and they are even worse than using plain nylon. No CP ever used here guys. DR

I went to a grand opening of a Bass Pro Shop on the outskirts of Houston and met Bill McElroy. He was painting pictures of fish on rod handles. He would paint a picture and then spray the handle with Krylon Clear spray. I posted a picture of a demo rod handle that he had worked on.

I would like to try spray painting some black vinyl winding checks to match the thread wraps and blank. I would make sure they fit loose enough over the blank as to not rupture the film of paint and they would eventually get a coat of thread finish. I assume I can use a hobby-type can of spray paint? Thanks.

I've spent hours on this form reading about tinting permagloss trying to find the answer to this question with no luck (My search's were probably wrong). How much is too much tint for the permagloss to carry? I'm building a rod for my wife who "just would love" a purple rod. She has pick out a color chip that is the color she wants and I have the information on the tints used to

I have been given an old blank to refinishing, this rod was used in salt water all its life and a good bit of the 6ft length is in a beautiful wooden handle. , the blank appears to be fiberglass, it has a yellow color to it, and is translucent to a point where you can see the fibers. My question is can I strip the guide, and use Permaglos to get a finish. Or can you use Permaglos for a fiberg

I have been reading the rodboard now for over 3 years. Most of what I have learned has been from Tom's Book(getting started) ,Rodmaker Magazine, two trips to the NorthWest gathering at Lamiglas and most of all this rodboard. When I want to try something new I do a search and the info has been there. Thank you, to Tom and all the dedicated people who answer questions on the board. I want to tint

Hey Everyone, One of our most popular fishing spots in Texas is called PINS (Padre Island National Seashore). It is 62 miles of beach that is national park and completely unspoiled and undeveloped. They allow people to drive on this beach for its entire length. One of the things that we have to deal with is drunk people "booze cruising" at night and wiping out your spread of fishi

This is my first experience with permagloss and I think I could use some pointers. I am attempting to recondition some fiberglass flag poles at my golf course and thought it can't be much different than working with fishing rods but my results so far are not what I had expected. Here are the steps I have taken: 1. Clean poles with TSP 2. Give a good scotchbrite treatment 3. Paint with Krylon

I don't know where this went so I will try again. I just stripped an old boat rod blank and was wondering what type of finish or paint I should use to cover up the white blank. Also how to apply it so it looks more prfessional with no streaks. Are there a variety of colors? Finally, do I need to put some sort of clear protective finish on top of it? Thanks for your help. I will begin wrapping a G Loomis blank using chevrons. The blank color is a gloss graphite (natural) color. I plan on using primarily gold and black and maybe just a little gray.My question is from an aesthetic point of view would this chevron wrap look better with a black base wrap or would you wrap directly on the gloss graphite blank. any ideas or opinions are appreciated. Thanks again,

I'd been using my 4 oz bottle of Dale Clemens' "Brilliance Color Sealant" for all my thread work over the past several years and have finally run low. I did some reading on this forum and decided to try Flex Coat's CP. I spent over 4 hours doing my first complex butt wrap ( a quad diamond design using various shades ranging from yellow through oranges to reds to create a flame appeara

I have painted a blank and am going to now wrap the guides. I Flex coat my whole rod not just the guides (for added protection). So there will be parts of the rod where the flex coat is applied directly to the paint. Has anyone had any trouble with epoxy finishes eating plasti kote? Do I need to add a color preserver first or can I Flex coat right over the paint?

G'day Guys, Well I've sort of rectified my previous problems with refinishing a blank. I couldn't easily get hold of Krylon Fusion so decided to use Tamiya PS paint. Its quite good stuff and is available in a wide range of colurs including metallics. I sprayed 2 coats on the blank and it turned out nicely. Last night I decided to coat with Permagloss. Unfortunately the solvent in the Permag

Hi, I promised my neice that I would make her a pink fishing rod for her 4th birthday (this July). I am having a difficult time finding a pink blank in the size I want. Ideally, it will be small, 4'6" or 5' with light power . We will probably just fish for stocked trout or very small bass. The only blank I can find is a 7-foot 1st run on mudhole (SPSWB7L). Can I simply cut this t
