I did a search here, using the subject text, and found zero matches. I watched a very informative video. (Thank you Ken Preston, and my new isp for adsl speed to be able to watch the vid)
My question: does a colored overcoat have the durability to withstand all those flexes, twists and turns to be encountered during useage and quite possibly, abuseage. What about UV? My mind is racing two yea

I am using ls supreme, just started this year and so far love it. BUT, i have encountered a few problems of late.
I am building rods for an Australian manufacturer and have used the ls on the first batch of rods i did for them with no problems. The second batch i did, i had problems with the epoxy covering over their stamp. They use a paint, on a stamp plate, which is then imprinted on the rod.

Was wondering if anyone out there new what kind of flat black coating GLoomis used to use on their factory GL3 rods. It was definitely paint of some sort & very durable, thanks for any suggestions.

214. Krylon Paint
I submitted a question to Krylon about using a Krylon paint product for either a fiberglas, graphite and or carbon fishing rod.
This is the answer I got:
"No, unfortunately at this time we do not offer a product for your application. I will pass your request on to the marketing team for future product consideration."
Thank you.

217. Painted rods
Confession time @ rodbuilding.org. I read Trip Bayles mail about painted rods and must confess that this neophite rodbuilder didn't know that blanks could BE painted! If it wouldm't take a jillion pages would someone tell me briefly how to paint a blank? Lew Walters

After going through all of the archives, I still have a question about painting a blank. Several people have mentioned using Testor's (model paints) pigments to color epoxey's, permagloss, etc. but I would like to know if anyone has tried using Testor's model spray paints to paint a blank. I know they are good paints, come in a large variety of colors, including metalflakes and small spray can

Thanks to Duane Jenkins for the tip on ABS pipe instead of PVC. It comes in black (much better looking than the white or gray PVC), is lighter and less brittle. Wipe off the lettering, glue on an end cap, a male threaded adapter and a female threaded end cap and you're in business- for about $4 a tube!
The 1 1/2" pipe works well. I'm now working on a Velcro strap system for a handle/carry s

221. Rod tubes -PVC tip
While I search for a better material to make rod tubes cheaply I stumbled on a tip for using PVC pipe.
I don't mind the white or gray color but the lettering (company name, specs, barcode, etc.) that is stenciled on the side is plain ugly. Someone mentioned sanding it off but I found that paint stripping solvent (the non-toxic kind works fine) will take off the stencils with a wipe of a paper t

222. painting a blank
Ok - I did a search on paint, painting a blank, changing colors, everything else I could think of - and yes I chose all dates - I'm still confused.
It seems to me that the prefered method is a automotive paint job. correct? Is that method flexible enough? I can see where it would be a very tought finish and I get that done.
I visited the site of Ken's refered to and that seems to be pretty i

223. color change paint ?
Here's the scoop. My son bougt some testors paint for his model car that changes shades of blue when applied over a darker color.
Here's what I'm thinking.
Sand the gloss coat off a black blank.
Spray on the color change paint and then top coat with clear Krylon.
I would do prema gloss but I think the solvents will eat through the paint.
Anything wrong with my technique/procedure?

225. customizing rod case
I just ordered an aluminum rod case from REC for a birthday-gift rod, and was thinking of customizing it with the recipients name, etc. Anyone ever done this? I was thinking I could use a water-slide decal and then epoxy over it with rodbuilders epoxy, and maybe even do a little thread art around the tube (2") to set it off. Any suggestions?

I used a gel pen and sprayed a Krylon clear coat over it, however the finish did not stick well to the clear coat. When I removed some bubbles with an exacto knife before the final coat, the finsih pulled off of the area I sprayed. What spray do most of you use? I have tried 5 different gel pens and have not found one the I feel drys enough to apply finish over without risk of smearing the ink

I have seen travel rods with a dot of paint on each section at the ferrule joint used to make it easy to line up the sections when assembling the rod (just line up the dots). What kind of paint would be suitable to use for this?

Elrod, I've searched the archives and you seem to be the man with the most experience using Crystal Coat. I'm ready to finish the wraps on my first rod. Already used the Cp, everything looks fine. I've researched the subject and decided with my experience that Crystal Coat was the best choice of finish. I grew up in the paint business and I am very comfortable and confident in the multiple th

230. Dodging a bullet!
Hey Guys,
Just thought I'd post a warning concerning clear coating over inscriptions and decals. I lightly scuff sanded the rod blank (St. Croix Legend Ultra) and then wiped the area clean with denatured alcohol. I then mounted the factory decal after which I inscribed the blank with a DecoColor "Liquid Gold" opaque Paint Marker (Xylene based). The marker worked exceptionally well
