I emailed a question to Mudhole rod building about a product they carry - magic marbling mad swirl. My question was "will this product stay on the EVA or is there a sealer that needs to applied after the mad swirl". The answer I received is that they have had success by putting epoxy over the mad swirl because over time the paint may begin to rub off. Has anyone ever applied epoxy to EV

32. Dip Pen
For those of you using a dip pen for signatures I would like to know what size nib you are using and a source to get one. Also if you are using Testor paint for ink what is the ratio for diluting. Thanks in advance.

As I imagine most of you do, I file or grind my guide feet prior to wrapping to get the smooth transition from the blank up on to the guide foot. On a trip last year we got caught in some ugly weather and several of the rods in our "arsenal" were damaged. My son informed me that I need to find a different way to do my guides, as a lot of them showed signs of rust. I showed him some Cals

Good morning, I am in the process of putting an inscription on a fly rod, I am using a dip pen and Testors silver metallic paint. I haven't had any problems writing on the rod that part turns out fine, but the other day I sprayed some clear acrylic over the inscription to seal it prior to putting some rod finish on and the acrylic made the inscription run. I let the Testors paint dry for rou

Ok - I have a blank I have painted with krylon fusion - The finish is not as smooth as the rods come from the factory. I have ordered some permagloss to coat it but after searching it looks like the permagloss may not be the way to go. I remember an article in rod builder showing a way to apply it using a pvc cap and some foam to coat the blank with. Just wondering if I need to go another

Hi All, I wrote on a rod today with Testors model paint, gold, and applied epoxy to it after 12 hours. Well disaster stuck! the epoxy smeared the paint. This was the final step in the completion of the rod that I was planning to give my Dad tomorrow for his retirement gift! Is there a set amount of time I need to wait before applying the epoxy?I thought you can apply epoxy over Testors ena

Instead of going to the auto body shop, I used Krylon on a graphite rod. I have three coats on and it is chipping. What did I do wrong? I did not place a finish like spar finish for a final coat. Any suggestions will be of help I just finished wrapping the guides and if there are any suggestions besides pulling them off I would appreciate your comments Thanks

So I've been lurking for a while and have found many answers here. Can't find any info on this so I figured I'd make my first post. I painted the blank of my newest build (first paint job). I used duplicolor perfect match lacquer and it came out real nice. I want a good clear over it and was going to buy an LVLP spray gun. However, two part urethane is a bit out of my hopeful price range. Klass

I am building a new graphite bass rod. I want to change the rod's color. What type of paint do I use? How do I prep the rod blank? Do I use a sealer over the paint? And what else do I need to know about painting a graphite rod blank?

I have finished painting 15 rods for a guide client. I used Duplicoat for the yellow rods and and Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch (seems to be similiar to Krylon Fusion) for the "Dukes of Hazard" orange and lime green rods. All of the blanks were painted several weeks ago. None of the paint cured as hard as I would like for a rod finish. Is U-40 PermaGloss a good over-coat for a tougher

Hello all, I have been struggling to do some rod lettering and numbering with a pen. I dont want to use stickers, decals, or transfers. I want to use ink, then coat it with spar varnish. Glass and graphite rods. Can anyone provide some good info on what nibs they have been happy with? Inks? Maybe a link? You tube has a fair amount of info, but nothing really on writing on a blank.

I am currently repairing and stripped down an older MHX based rod. I wet sanded a light layer of the entire rod and decided to try the Krylon Fusion based paint with a Krylon clear coat to follow. My question is has anyone used Krylon Fusion before? If so how did it stand up? And secondly what paint is the preference of choice to most? Thanks in advance for the replies.

I want to paint some crankbaits and plan to use regular krylon enamel. But want to coat with them something clear, hard and waterproof. Not epoxy. What if any rod building products are out there that I can use for this. I would think Permagloss would be too hot and might melt the enamel. Janns has some plug coatings. Was wondering if you guys have used them and what you think of them. Thanks.

Hi All, I sprayed Testors Black Lacquer onto a stripped fibreglass blank to test e few things. I then scribed with a quill pen using Testors Enamel from the glass jar on the lacquer. When I applied a epoxy finish the entire finish had fish eyes! I did not put a clear coat over the lacquer sray paint. Could that be my problem? Lucky this was was done on a test piece of fibreglass I had.

This morning I attempted to coat an old ice rod that I repainted with Krylon Fusion with PermaGloss before I actually do it to my dads Christmas present and it looks as though I spread paint removed on the rod. Its all bubbled up and wrinkled and the paint is literally falling off so I am not going to use that on my dads rod, I just need way more practice with it before I use it again. Anyways

Been asked to make a 5 foot 1 or 2 piece rod for a little girl. It will have a Zebco type reel and is going to be in pink. Thinking that fiberglass would be most forgiving but I can't seem to find any. And not sure how well paint would hold up on glass. Any suggestions, or if anyone has done this I would appreciate your input. I have done quite a few on the CRB blanks but they are 5'6"

I am going to paint some fuji reel seats. I think Krylon Fusion is going to be my best best from what I have read and tried. My only real concern is how durable it is on the threaded portion of the seat barrel. Is the paint going to wear and peel after a few uses of the locking nut? I thought about coating the entire job with permagloss or similar but wonder if the added thickness of paint and cl

I want to put cp and epoxy on the rod wraps tonite. I am using Flexcoat type cp and epoxy. Can I wait about an hour between the two or do I need to wait longer? Some say two hours is enough for any cp to get dry.

For those that have used both, what would you are the differences between Permagloss and Lumaseal? Does one dry harder than the other. Working time differences?

Anyone have any experience with adding color and /or glitter to U-40 Perma Gloss? I want to paint some “show” rods with two colors and if practical, add some “sparkle” to the butt suction. I have not seen anything on Rodbuilding.org about painting with color except for using Dupil Coat and Krylon Fusion. There are not enough colors of Krylon Fusion available to me & using Dupil Coa

well,a while ago I had a guy that wanted a camoflauge colored 8' boat rod for use on cod and haddock. I got some interesting feedback from this forum, one guy said not to clutter it up with too much camo, but no one got really specific how to color the blank,so here's what I did,I had some Krylon camo paint in spray cans so I let her have it with three colors done in large splotchy areas, then Iet

Hey guys... am still somewhat of a newbie so I imagine it's operator error. That said, after I apply 2 to 3 coats of CP and then a thin coat of epoxy, I'm getting a silver-ish color randomly on my wraps? Any suggestions or advice? Thanks in advance.

I bought several old rods & reels at a 2nd hand place. Mostly I was looking for pieces to make reamers. A couple of the rods seemed to be in good shape except for the guides and tips. They also had numerous scratches. I removed the guides & tips and started looking on the internet for blank painting / repainting tips. A couple of articles talked about using Krylon spray paint for pla

I have a couple of rods I want to put the specs on and I was wondering if anyone has tried writing on water slide decal paper or a clear address label, sealing them with Krylon, applying them to the rod and epoxeing over them. Will this work or is there a better procedure? Any advice or input is appreciated. Thank you, Tom

A recently painted a rod with Krylon fusion, and coated over the paint with Minwax clear spray polyurethane. The finished product turned out beautifully, but I am not totally happy with the results, as the paint seems to chip VERY easily. I have put 2 coats of the spray poly on, is that not enough? Is there a different product that I should be using other than the Minwax? I've never used

Can anybody give me an idea of how to support the rod while its turning as I put rod varnish on? I'm baffled because where do you put the supports if the whole rod is covered with varnish?
