Ive reamed a wood insert for a seat. Im only left with .100 wall thickness maybe a touch more at the biggest ID in the taper.. Should I go with a bigger OD? What is a good guideline for how much meat should be over the blank? Thanks in advance Scott

<<Try this again. Had a lttle trouble with the system not liking my real name nor my handle. Posted under Comedie yesterday, but post was later purged>> Maybe 30 years back I built some rods for myself. After hearing about acid wraps, have decided I have to try that. For now, ocean bottom rods. 3 projects. Project 1: rewrap a factory Daiwa Eliminator, 6'6" fiberglass, 20-6

I spoke with the folks at the Radisson Hotel this morning. Only a handful of rooms are left at the hotel for the show dates. If you want to stay directly across the street from the hotel, don't wait - another couple weeks (or less) and you'll be out of luck. There are additional hotels within walking distance of the Showplace facility. Two are within 3 or 4 blocks. You can find more infor

I am about to order 30-40 spools of thread and I need a little help deciding on the colors. I'm basically looking for a nice rainbow of popular colors to show potential customers. Thanks in advance!!!!!!

I realize that epoxy can be somewhat subjective but I just wanted to see what everyone out there is using. Personally I've been happy with High Build Flex Coat.

Dear Friends: I'm building a 130 lb trolling rods and I've some questions as I've never built such powerful kind of rods before. I've already wrapped de underwrap and I was going to begin wrapping the roller feet. The idea was making a double wrap for this. The question is that I had thought on making all wraps before aplying epoxy. But I don't know if this will be maybe to thick (I mean th

37. CP?
I know this is a dumb question, but I have to ask. How close to CP is Elmers glue? I tried it on an experamental wrap and it seems to work fine, with no adverse effect.

We've been playing around with Madeira and have had mixed results with color preservers. My trusty 811seems to leave a residue that's not really visible until after the finish has been applied on darker colors. Many of the others seem to leave a milky build-up in places and when thinned, don't allow the threads to return to anywhere near the same brilliance that they had on the spool. Last w

Hi all, I would like to hear from those who have found the most general speed or revolutions necessary to dry your finish's. For example is a 6rpm that is slower better or worse, or a higher rpm better or worse? Thanks for the input

I thought I would enjoy reading what others feel is there favorite part of the building process. Well, I will start out by saying that I enjoy designing the rod the most. Looking through all the catalogs and web sites and finding the componets and sizes that I will need. Going to the mailbox everyday and opening the packages and seeing what I have chosen and fitting the parts together to see how

Could someone explain to me in layman's (practical fishing) terms how the new American Titan Turbo Nanolite compares to Fuji 's SiC, other than cost. I did a search but comparisons I found were to Alconites. Much appreciated, Ron

My Cousin gave me this really old 7 foot medium action rod this weekend to refurbish. I believe it is fiberglass and a sort of Pumkin orange. It is the strangest colour you can imagine and I think that is partly why he likes it so much. Anyway I have been stripping off the old guides which have been wrapped with a garnet coloured thread wrap and a underwrap of white, which is not even thread b

In the past several days I have been getting requests for a long time "old" favorite Epoxy Coating Finish- it is a very good finish but with the coming of the likes such as FlexCoat, U40, GlassCoat, Gudebrod and American Tackle finishes this one has become more or less a "white elephant", at least for me in terms of sales. Back in the early 90's it was available in small 4

What is the best and clearest finish to use? I have used Dura Gloss LS Supreme and I have a problem with the cracking around the edge of the guide feet. I grind the feet to make a smooth transition to the underwrap. Am I doing anything wrong? I was thinking of changing to Aftcote. Also I noticed that when I fish in the rain that there are milky spots where the rain water was. Any idea

I've been using Aftcote finish lately and like its working properties. I like the way it flows, and like that it's very clear. But now I'd like to try a high build thread epoxy. A non-yellowing formula would be my preference. I should add that I wasn't that impressed by regular LS Supreme so am interested in knowing if their high build is vastly different from their light version. Thanks,

I just finished my first rod, it turned out pretty darn good If I do say so myself. I used flex coat finish on my wraps. I was hoping to get some input on other peoples favorite finishes and what they like about them. Thanks in advance, Shane

I've prepped & painted a blank and am ready for the final finishing. I have a can of Minwax Spar Urethane and wondered if and/or how I should thin it before application. Does it even need thinning? I've done a search of this site and I think I read that you should thin with mineral spirits, but I want to be sure before I go mucking with it. I plan on applying with coffee filters or cheese

Following a visit to the All Star plant where I saw 50:50 dilution of Flex Coat with isopropyl alcohol for and intial coat of butt wraps and guide windings, I began experienting with various dilutions of Flex Coat and Glass Coat to try to extend working times and better control correction of minor defects such as bubbles, low or high spots, etc. My question to Ralph O'Quinn or others who are expe

Great thread, but it got me wondering. Since all Hardener's turn to some degree, would storing all of those in the Regrigerator like Ralph suggest with Supreme - slow down or reduce this nasty phenomenon? Or is it only the stuff that LS uses in it's hardener that is effected by temperatures? What exactly causes all the other Hardener's to turn, or is each brand different?

Hey folks, Recently I have been wrapping a lot of rods (for a change!), and have been experiminting with different blank/thread combos. Just out of curiosity, I would like to know what types of finishes and which color you guys prefer on your blanks. Also if you have any ideas for thread/blank color combos that look good, I'd be interested to hear those as well. So, what is yo

I have just built my 4th rod. But the last three rods I built I kept breaking out in a rash and my eye swole shut with the last one. Is it the graphite? I have been told no. I have been told it is the epoxy. Am I odd or is this common and if so what epoxy should I try. I dont want to quit building rods. Please help Scott

Guys, from reading the posts it is becoming more & more obvious that the selection of certain supplies you have in US is vastly greater than is available in UK. Not referring to things like blanks, guides etc as I can get them no problem. Finishes ??? I use Flexi-coat plus a UK manufactured finish. Klass coat, what is that used for, threads, whole blank ??? Of course I can ge

Tom, I noticed a rod you had wrapped in white thread with gold trim. That is pretty neat looking but I have always been afraid of yellowing. What's the long term experience with this and what thread/cp or no and finishes used? Thanks, John

I just got three Forecast 864-4 blanks on clearance. I have inspected each for: 1 - straightness. 2 - finish. 3 - ferrule fit. How important would you prioritize each? As you can guess, no one blank finishes first in all categories. How do you pick your favorite? Is there something else for which I need to inspect?

I contemplated making hardwood hosels and trim rings for cork grips until I noticed that some of the suppliers were selling hosels "impregnated" with something to make them ...? stable, shrink and crack resistant, waterproof. Will homemade hardwood hosels and rings (walnut, cherry, mahogany, oak) finished/sealed with multiple coats of urethane or other finish be stable enough for rod
