Tom and his white wraps

Tom,
I noticed a rod you had wrapped in white thread with gold trim.
That is pretty neat looking but I have always been afraid of yellowing. What's the long term experience with this and what thread/cp or no and finishes used?
Thanks,
John

The only finishes I'm aware of that don't yellow, are LS Supreme (epoxy) and PermaGloss (moisture-cured urethane). I've done several of these type rods with Flex Coat and they're terrible looking now. One has never been exposed to UV light and it turned just as brown as the others. (But Flex Coat is a great overall finish - just not for use over white threads and white blanks.)

CPX and SC215 were my two favorite color preservers, but neither is made anymore. Gudebrod 811 is the best I've found since, but I'm not happy with the inconsistent viscosities that I find from bottle to bottle.

Other than that, you have to keep the wraps tightly packed and keep your hands clean. White thread will show flaws, dirt, loose packing, etc., moreso than any other color.

Tom,

What about painting the blank (underneath the wrap area) White? I have had pretty good success doing this with light colors though I have never used white thread

That would certainly help.

Hi Mike,

I paint the area under the under wrap with flat white paint. Let it dry forr a couple days and then a coat of color preserver which places a hard covering over the white paint. This hard covering prevents the tie down pull thru loop from scratching the white paint. Now I wrap white nylon 'A' thread, pack it and burnish. The finished product is extremely white and looks like it has been painted rather than being thread. Over a black or graphite colored blank it looks great!

As Tom say, keep your hands very clean and don't wrap in a dirty area.
