I just got three Forecast 864-4 blanks on clearance. I have inspected each for: 1 - straightness. 2 - finish. 3 - ferrule fit. How important would you prioritize each? As you can guess, no one blank finishes first in all categories. How do you pick your favorite? Is there something else for which I need to inspect? Re: Inspecting Forecast Blanks - What's Important?

Marty, for functionality, I think ferrule fit is #1 for me. Straightness is only a big issue for me if the curve is very pronounced or there is more than one curve or there is a twist. I have had a couple of Forecast blanks that would "rock" a little bit at the ferrule. A couple of passes with a sanding block took care of it. If it is a rod for myself, minor finish blems are obviously only asthetic distractions. For a customer, I won't build a rod on a blank with obvious blems. This is one of those personal opinion things and I'm betting you'll get posts putting these 3 things in all different orders. And they'll all be right depending on what each person wants.
