18481. Re: Search Function
Greg,
The forum works in starts and fits - there was a lot of damage done. Some content has completely disappeared.
Please be patient while things are being worked on. This won't happen overnight or even in a week's worth of nights.

Web browsers keep a copy of the last page or pages you've visited. This allows a quick return to that page when you hit your "back" button, etc. Because it doesn't update, however, whatever you saw previously you will see again, even if the page has changed since then.
Generally, browser caches can be set for size, so that a website or page will refresh every so often. You can do t

18483. Custom Rod Symbol in TTW
Tackle Trade World, the world's largest fishing tackle trade publication, has given a nice mention about the new International Symbol for Custom Rod Building in their December 2008 edition.
They did not mention the official website for the symbol, but I won't look a gift horse in the mouth . Any talk is good talk and this will only further increase the acceptance and recognition of the symbol.

A single large fish eye is rarely a fish eye at all, but rather a large air bubble crater. But, that's not absolute. Try a good cleaning and then recoat and see what happens.

18489. Decals
I have received the new shipment of decals featuring the International Symbol for Custom Rod Building. Those who have sent SASEs for them will be receiving them in a few days.
I was also sent a few more of the rod builder license plates with this order, so I will again be including one of those with any back issue order for 3 or more issues. I'll continue to include them until the supply runs

If the PermaGloss is peeling off it shouldn't be hard to remove. But I suspect it has been "beaten" off in spots. If you prepared a water break free surface, the stuff is almost impossible to remove without some real elbow grease.
You might try one of the water based citris strippers to see if that will soften it. I haven't tried to remove PG with this method so I can't guarantee re

18491. Re: ROD FINISH (EPOXY)
In that case, you almost certainly have solvent trapped in your epoxy.
Thinning can also change the long term properties of your epoxy. I'd stay away from thinning and try again.

About anything you can think of along these and other lines has been covered in RodMaker Magazine over the last 12 years. Check the back issue page at www.rodmakermagazine.com.
Now having said that if you want to go ahead without any background material you'll find a combination wood and cork grip not all that hard to make. However, cork cuts faster than wood so you must exercise care when sa

18493. Re: ROD FINISH (EPOXY)
The instructions for U40 LS Supreme specifically say not to thin it with anything. In fact, Ralph O'Quinn, the formulator, would have a fit if he found you had thinned his finish based on Flex Coat instructions.
When in Rome do as the Romans do... when using U40, follow their instructions, when using Flex Coat, follow their instructions. That way, you have recourse with the seller if you run i

You aren't going to remove the blank finish with a hair dryer nor Goo Gone (it's just a mild citrus solvent for removing adhesive gum).
If you want to strip your blank finish, you will either have to scrape it off (don't slice into the blank) or use a paint stripper to soften and loosen the finish. There are some water based and/or citrus strippers that do pretty well and shouldn't hurt the b

18496. Re: ROD FINISH (EPOXY)
Thinning epoxy can and often does lead to problems. The people who formulate the epoxy - the ones who actually manufacture it, do not recommend thinning it.
Your problem could be from thinning it, although it is more likely you did not get an exact 1 to 1 ratio of resin to hardener. That is the usual culprit when things like this happen.
Always mix a minimum of 3cc resin and 3cc hardener. T

18497. Re: revolver wrap
Roger,
Actually Rich's offset guides goes to the opposite side that the line passes by the blank. This is due to many hard running bass crankbaits to cause the line to stack heavy to one side of the reel spool if the guide is not offset so that the line cannot move and pull beyond the true 0 degree axis.
This isn't necessarily the case with all reels nor all lures, but on many bass type c

18498. Re: machinist lathe
For smaller but very high quality machines, I'd look at the Taig and Sherline.
There are larger and more feature oriented machines available from the orient. Micro Mark sells one, Grizzy, Jet, etc., all have similar versions.

18499. Re: revolver wrap
Scotty,
On Rich's offset guides, the idea is to get the line coming along at exactly 0 and 180 degrees, which it will never really do unless you offset those guides due to the ring opening itself. Don't worry too much about where the line is on the spool - that won't matter at all, just set the guides so that their inside ring edge is on the 0 and 180 degree axis. This ensures that the line i

18501. Re: Epoxy Coating Butt Cap
Right, on the veritcal surfaces, it will tend to run off, unless its being rotated which is what I was getting at. And then the speed of rotation for your particular epoxy will be critical.
You may wish to experiement with one before you attempt it on your final piece.

Jim,
You're not far from me, nor Buddy Owens who must live within 5 minutes of you. Either of us can show you how to easily hold any guide, even a micro guide, with a simple piece of masking tape. I've shown even long time builders this and they seem to be amazed that they overlooked what is really a very simple process.

18503. Re: Epoxy Coating Butt Cap
If you're able to affix it to your rotation device so that it's level, it will be fine. However, keep in mind that because epoxy is self leveling, any surfaces that aren't level will see epoxy on them that while level, isn't even across the un-level surface.

I spoke with the sales manager at the Radisson a few moments ago. They have made another 25 rooms available for our block. But this will be it. If you plan to stay directly across the street from the Showplace facility, this will be your last chance to do so. I do not expect these 25 rooms to last the week, if even a couple days.

Iighter is generally better, however weight savings in terms of bettering rod performance has a great deal to do with where along the rod you save that weight. Reducing even a little weight on the rod tip results in immediate and easily realized performance gains in a number of areas. A lighter reel, or reel seat, grip, etc., also pays dividends, but not as huge owing to the location where the w
