Not sure I follow - fly rods have stripper guides and I don't think this is what you're talking about. Are you talking about 2 very closely places guides in place of where a single butt guide would normally be? If you have a photo of this and could put it on the photo page I'm sure you'd get some comments. Of course you could also mock up a rod like this and see if can find any benefit.

Line comes off a spinning reel differently than it does on a casting reel. That's obvious, of course. With the spinning reel, the line leaves in semi-coils between the reel and the first guide. Those coils balloon a bit and will slap the rod if the ring is too close to the blank. The heavier and/or stiffer the line, the worse this situation is. ................

The fighting rods for this type fishing won't be stand-up or heavy trolling types, but rather longer and faster tipped rods as mentioned above. You may indeed find a live bait type blank that would fill the bill for this. Or, even a Hot Shot blank. But I'd look first at anybody's general 7' saltwater fast action blanks. ....................

The key to spinning stripper guides is the height of the frame, not so much the ring size. With many of the smallest rings, you may not be able to get the height required for the best performance and could easily wind up with a great deal of line slap. Just be careful and try various set ups. ..............

Put a piece of tape around the ends and square off with a razor blade. Take an emery board and taper the ends of the cork tape much as you taper the end of a guide foot. Then make a thread wrap up and over the end. This photo shows the result: On the sections that mate to the reel seat, you won't need to taper the edges, just make a narrow thread wrap. On the butt, install a thin wal

Actually, the longer the rod, the more any weight savings, particularly near the tip, will become readily apparent. Fly rods tend to benefit from guide weight reduction more than just about any other type of rod. Faster damping, quicker reaction, etc. But, you still have to use guides that are large enough to pass your line and any required connections. That was true 100 years ago and it's s

Use the smallest guides that will pass your line and required connections. That may be a #2, or it may be a #10. Only you can determine that. ...................

Greg, From a cost efficiency standpoint, you're doing the right thing. Much cheaper to mix up a little more finish, than to have to take valuable time stripping guides and rewrapping. ..............

You could fly the kite off the reel itself, but generally you need to something to hold the reel and get the line away from the rod mount, thus, a short rod with nothing more than a reel seat, gimbal, and tiptop. A cut-off butt section from a light boat rod or medium duty trolling rod easily suffices. Most don't even have grips, although f you give it some thought, you might just be able to impr

That is a very, very short butt length for a rod of that length. My 9' surf plugging rods have seats that are roughly 16" past the butt. ................

A 16 is way too small for almost any adult hand on a spinning rod. Use at least an 18 if not a 20. On casting rods, you hold the rod just behind the seat so it's not as critical as on a spinning rod where you actually hold the seat. ...................

RodBond was designed with a pretty good margin for error. Unlike most thread wrap epoxies, RodBond will still work and retain its designed properties with a 60-40 mix. Anybody with a decent eye and 2 popcycle sticks can get closer than that. If you're simply a stickler for precision, buy some "mono-jet" syringes and pack with each part of the RodBond and dispense perfect portions.

The books have that information in step by step photos. It's done just like a guide wrap but without all the wraps in-between. Same tie-in and tie-off, just done almost simultaneously. ............

At this year's Expo I am going to have 2 very large, tall, interior lit, glass front display cases in the Atrium. These will be used for any and all rods which builders may wish to put on display for the public. The cases will be locked, thus they are secure from prying hands. All rods will be tagged with the owner's name and in order to retrieve it some form of valid ID will have to be shown.

Maderia thread is not made for use on fishing rods, keep that in mind. I'm not saying it won't work or that you can't use it, but you will want to take some precautions. If you do a search on this forum you should be able to turn up some tips on using it. ..................

James, You do not want to build a rod by "internet." Do your self a huge favor and purchase the required background information. Flex Coat's How We Do It DVD is excellent and will save you a ton of headaches. This forum is great for filling in the holes, but you don't want to rely on any web forum as your sole source of information for building that first rod. ...............

That's a tough situation. If you really need to move the balance point back towards the butt, away from the tip, I'd advise using a larger and/or heavier reel. Plenty of all metal "hardbody" reels out and around these days and some are quite heavy. Keep in mind that any weight you add at the extreme ends will have a greater effect than what you add anywhere else. So, an EVA or cork

Sort of. Just cut into the seat all around the circumference and then insert a screwdriver into the opening and "pop" "pop" "pop" until it all breaks loose. If you have a wood insert, cut and split the metal portion and remove. Then the wood can usually be split by tapping one end with a chisel. .............

If you do not wish to save the pieces, then I'd spiral cut the seat and "pop" it off. The cork can be shaved off and then sanded down to near blank level. The new grip can be installed over what little cork remains in place. Just be careful not to cut into the blank during either operation. .................

Something that I was discussing with Bob McKamey this morning, is that these so called "micro guides" aren't at all new. Fishermen and rod builders in other parts of the world have been using them for over a decade. So their performance and worth isn't at all suspect - it has already been proven. Whether or not they'll work for the type/s of rods you build is something you'll have to e
