Friction between surfaces is dictated by the pressure forcing them against one another. The drag of the line's frontal surface area is more of a casting impediment than the friction of the line against the butt guide ring on a spinning rod. .................

15722. Re: Rumor?
I would expect that Kistler would not tout the maker of their blanks. This is due to the fact that companies often change suppliers during the same model year and could take the same blank design to a different maker in mid-stream. Also, some blank manufacturers do not allow rod makers to trade on their name. ..........

I believe he said separate categories for spinning and casting, and for braid and mono. I suppose spincasting could be added as well. We could toss them all in the same class, but at that casting weight I think spinning outfits might be at a decided disadvantage against the other two. ..................

I have the data taken from tests with a mechanical casting machine. And you're correct, there are a lot of things happening simultaneously on a spinning rod cast. Drag on the line is a major factor, however, much more so than friction between line and guide/s. What Ken has just proposed is more of a competition than a test of any one variable, but it would be fun and beyond a certain level I t

Understanding that this is indeed a competion with a host of variables and not any sort of test, I sort of like the idea. It might be fun for guys to mess around with a rod or rods over the next few months and see what they can come up with. It could result in a good many people learning an awful lot about guide set ups as far as casting is concerning. If you did want to take the blank out of

You have a great deal of frontal drag with the line on a cast made with a spinning reel. That line diameter coupled with the length involved creates a fairly large area. And it grows as the line diameter increases. This is the main reason that spinning reels have trouble matching the casting distance of spincast or casting reels. And this isn't an assumption - it is the primary reason for th

Right, it's just like the blanks Cabelas had made by G. Loomis. Those weren't the same blanks offered by G. Loomis under their own name. They were built by G. Loomis as Fish Eagle blanks for Cabelas. ............

I am also a mechanical engineer with a background in aeronautics. Working with "drag" was a large part of my job. Surface drag and frontal drag are not nearly equal. Frontal drag being vastly more of a factor than surface drag in most instances. If you throw a 2x4 spear fashion, it will go further for the same effort than if you turn it perpendicular and throw it that way. One posit

None. They are both just tubular shafts and in many cases the exact same blank is marketed under both designation. Occasionally, a company will design a blank with a specific use in mind, but a blank is a blank and you could use it either way. The blank will never know what type reel you mount on it. ..............

No, the drag of the line through the air is the greater factor. That .010 diameter line also has length. Once you multiply that you realize just how much drag is present. Surface drag or resistance, pales in most cases to frontal drag. And because the line is revolving in a coil, you have a tremendous amount of what for the most part is frontal drag. This is precisely why spincast ree

Blank manufacturers commonly make product for a wide variety of companies outside of themselves. North Fork will certainly be making blanks for a number of rod manufacturers and for private label blank offerings as well. Kistler might be one of the companies that contracts with North Fork for certain blanks, just as they're presently contracting with other blank makers for the blanks they use no

Any rod will cast any line. If you just want to cast the rod, moving up or down a line size will work find as long as you adjust how much of it you hold beyond the tip. If you're testing for clearance, there won't be that much difference in one size, up or down. ............

I did not say that gravity was the only factor, I said that gravity pulls the line downward on the cast, which it does. There is very little friction involved between the line and the guides. Friction is a function of 2 surfaces and the pressure between them. Centrifugal force does exert some pressure therefore friction is present, but it is slight and therefore plays a small role. A smal

You only need 2 or 3 sizes total. Going through every size just because they're offered isn't buying you anything. Settle on a stripping guide, running guides and perhaps one size in-between those two. ............

I'll try to get some photos up over the weekend so you can see how much "cleaner" the actual casting line path is on a rod with the guides with their edges set on the plotted line path versus one with the guides set so the plotted path runs through the center. ...............

You've misunderstood what I said about gravity. Gravity acts on your line the entire time, even during the cast. The line will always touch the bottom edge of the guide ring due to gravity. You cannot make the line pass through the center of the ring. On your current set up, your line touches the bottom of each guide ring both on the retrieve and the cast. And if you were to move to an e

Stabilized wood has generally been impregnated with an acrylic resin. Coloring alone won't do that, but if the acrylic resin has been colored, then you have both at the same time. When you buff or polish a stabilized piece, it is the acrylic resin that is actually providing the luster. ...........

Yes, I understand. Next time you set one up try the guide edge on the line path and see how that works for you. Gravity ensures the line will drop to whatever level you allow it to. It is the bottom of the guide ring that determines where that point will be. ................

Although designed for bamboo fly rod blanks, you can use them on any rod type. A couple things to consider - these are beautiful ferrules and at less than half the price of other similar nickel silver ferrules they're certainly a tremendous value. At the same time, they're still much more than common chrome over brass ferrules. So you have to consider the price range of the rods you plan to us

The UPS guy just dropped off a box containing more International Custom Rod Building Symbol Decals. So I have another 7,000 for free distribution. One note - I'm still getting regular letter sized envelopes from folks requesting a decal. I can't put a 5-inch diameter decal into a 3 inch high letter envelope without folding the decal. This tends to stretch the vinyl, effectively ruining the dec

Woodturning is fairly easy with proper technique. It's just that the skew is easy to "catch" the wood with and with greater consequences to the workpiece than with say a gouge or a scraper. No doubt that the skew releases you from some amount of sanding but it does take time to master. I'd skip it for the time being and come back to it once you're proficient with the other tools. ...
