What Jann's has is actually a hook keeper, but the design and parts are very similar to the ring and clasp line guides. You could make do with those or attempt to fabricate your own using those rings and making your own straps. .................

You're still missing something - if you want to convert ERN back to number of cents, that has always been possible for the very reason you mention - the Rosetta Stone chart only goes so high thus it would be impossible for you to ever encounter an ERN figure that wasn't already directly related to number of cents on that same chart. What you can't do without an expanded chart is go the other d

ERN serves the purpose which I outlined above. As I stated, if you are not attempting to match a fly line to a rod then using number of cents to compare the power of one rod to another will certainly suffice. Converting ERN to number of cents has always been a matter of simply looking at the Rosetta Stone chart. The higher ERN values that many have asked for have not existed previously so the

Alex, The Common Cents System was intended to provide relative comparison. That was the point of the system. The ERN values were designed to coincide with the AFFTA weight scale - AFFTA built in those ranges, not Dr. Hanneman or the Common Cents System. If you're concerned about a jump in ERN values at the start of each range, just stick with the number of cents - there is no jump where th

If it were me I'd go lighter, by a little bit. But it's not totally out of the question to use a 7/8. That really depends on the power of that specific blank. Not all 7/8 rated blanks have the same power. ....................

Okay, it took me a few weeks to get the blanks in. Following up on this thread concerning the Action Angle component of the Common Cents System, I obtained the same 3 blanks which had been discussed in that thread. These were the Castaway 964 & 965, and the Batson Enterprises RX7 CB80MH. Five individual custom builders, including Steve Gardner from this forum, examined the blanks by ha

I've used the standard security wraps for decades. I'm not very hard on my equipment and thus saw no need to go to the Forhan wrap. Then I finally had a rod hang momentarily in a kayak hatch and a guide pull loose. Since then I've used the Forhan wrap on all single foot guides. For the additional 10 seconds it takes to do it, it provides a great measure of additional security, Remember, guides r

These are not heavy duty guides by any stretch of the imagination. However, they' not extremely fragile either. Without knowing exactly how you treat your rods or what your fishing entails I really can't say if they'd be up to the job or not. My gut feeling is that you'd be better off sticking with the heavier guides if your rods see a good amount of bumping and banging around in the boat. ..

You would almost certainly have to use an air brush to get a nice job. If you know a serious plastic modeler in your area you might inquire as to what he would do it for. I used enamel and the paint has held up pretty well considering it's now something like 15+ years old. ....................

Good self centering chucks often cost $200 to $300, or more, by themselves. Granted, what we're doing in regards to fishing rods isn't that demanding. I'd try some of the tips offered here and see how things go. ..............

Guides are bound to the rod with thread, not finish. That's where the strength is. The epoxy simply encapsulates the thread and protects it. You do want something, either CP or epoxy or both, to fill in the tunnels alongside the guide feet in order to create a bit of a "shoulder" which prevents rocking or movement of the flat guide foot on the round rod blank. .............

It's not NFC's job to disseminate that information. They're a blank maker. They saw value in the system and extended the current chart to meet their needs. They aren't withholding anything from anybody. It's just not their responsibility to publish such things. They have other irons in the fire. I have the graph and will publish it as soon as I'm able to do so. If you're one of their customer

I would suggest that you get on the backs of the dozens and dozens and dozens of fishing magazines out there and have them publish that information for you. I agree that they have been very lax in helping you guys out in this area. They certainly have access to the information. Not to pick on one in particular, but BassMaster's coverage of the CCS has been pitiful. Most of the people on this

No, I feel the same way you do. But we have to remember that not all anglers treat their equipment the same way. Also, some kayak fishermen are launching and fishing in areas where rods do see a fair amount of rough handling. ................

There is a graph in my possession that may be published in RodMaker in the near future. It cleverly takes into consideration the non linear aspect of the scale and goes up as high or higher than would ever be needed. I don't believe it has any sort of straightforward equation listed but you can ask Jason in High Point about how he devised it. ...........

If you can find a popping blank in the casting range you want, you may be very pleased. But they're hard to come by in anything less than 7 feet. Most often I take 5'6" or 6' light power, fast action blanks, and extend them to 6'4" or 6'6" which also makes for an even faster action. If you have the Volume 7 #1 issue of RodMaker, you will find the recipe for a very nice smallmouth

I think you'd end up having to possess a great deal of practical experience in blank selection to really be able to do that with a high degree of success. In general you learn which manufacturers and which product lines have gained a good reputation for reasonable toughness and which ones seem to be failure prone unless treated with kid gloves. Even then, there are always less tough or more toug

Ken, That's another way of looking at the same thing - all the blanks in the SCIV series are made from the exact same fiber, but they do not all possess the exact same amount of toughness or durability. This is due to differences in the structure from one model to another. ...............
