Forhan Locking Wrap vs. Security Wrap

For single foot guides, what are most of you doing - the standard security wrap shown in volume 2 of Rodmaker, or the Forhan lock wrap? I'm building a medium-light spinning rod for bass.

Forhan wrap. It's actually pretty easy and looks good.

I have never used the Forhan wrao and have never had a guide pull out on any of my spinning rods..
But do you need it if using the new micro guides as the foot is so short?

Steven,
Before going to smaller guides, I never used the locking wrap. It was only when going to smaller guides with a short foot, that I needed to start using the locking wrap.
I found that I had several guides come out of the wrap - (short footed guides) when I was adjusting the final rotation of the guides before finish application.

However, since using the locking wrap on all of the guides smaller than about a size 10 - I have had no further issues.

Take care
Roger

Forhan wrap, it is good insurance and very quick and simple to do.

Forhan on AL rods that I do with SF guides. Only takes a few more seconds so why not?? It's also a good selling point that NO factory rods use.

I had a similar question, not too long ago. My thinking was (and is) if the guide were to get hung-up on something that I'd rather have a guide pull out, than snap the blank . On the rod that I'm currently building, I've decided to Forhan wrap all of the lower F guides. The guides in the tip section will be wrapped without the Forhan, just using 3 "blocking" wraps to help keep the guide from pulling out too easily. My hope is that they will pull out, if absolutely necessary. With micro guides, it's probably less of a concern, since the smaller guides are less likely to snag or stay hung-up on something. I'm building an 8 wt. fly rod that'll have to throw shooting heads and sinking heads, attached with loop to loop connections; so, I'm using fairly large guides. Honestly, I take really good care of my gear, and I think the guides would be fine either way, but I need to obssess about something, and the rod is splined; handle is finished; the deco wrap is done; the ferrules are wrapped. All I have left to worry about is whether or not to Forhan wrap 3 more guides in the tip section.

You do make a good point George. A couple of wraps after the ring will help to hold guides in. I have replaced several Ti guides that had no security wrap at all and the rings came off, but the feet were still on. On steel the feet would have probably came off also.

I've used the standard security wraps for decades. I'm not very hard on my equipment and thus saw no need to go to the Forhan wrap. Then I finally had a rod hang momentarily in a kayak hatch and a guide pull loose. Since then I've used the Forhan wrap on all single foot guides. For the additional 10 seconds it takes to do it, it provides a great measure of additional security, Remember, guides rarely pull loose or out unless you're right in the middle of an important fishing trip. What's it worth not to have to muss with your equipment when you're in the middle of such a trip.

Forhan wrap on all single foot guides. Quick, easy and looks good. Only negative is that the guides are slightly harder to move for alignment. Just take a little more time during the initial setting/placement of the guide prior to starting the wrap.

I use the Forhan Wrap on all of my single foot guides. I like the way it looks, holds and finishes.

Thanks for all the replies. It looks like Forhan is the way to go. I will give it a shot.

Bob -

I just finished my 4th rod. On this rod I used Forhan wraps. I really like the look and the security, but I thought there's no way I can get it to look good. I'm very slow at wrapping, but the Forhan wrap was easy. Looks good and I know I won't have another guide pull free.
Now if I can get the finish to look good I'll have a great looking rod.

Please post pic's of your rod when you finish.

Todd
