I decided to re-do a wrap on a snake which had a non-water based CP applied to it. When the thread came off the paint on the rod, the paint under the wrap was a combination of discolored, bubbled, or came off with the thread. No big deal since the area will be recovered by thread. Next time I'll test in the area of a grip first. I am wondering if this a common issue or just a problem with som

What do the thread clippings in the finish contribute to the outcome I wonder?

I second Kirk's request.... Takes the Pony Express a long time to make it to the North Pole!

Choices. ...Choices.... When the roads are sane it is either fishing or hunting season. Moosing wins this round! Glad you make the effort Kirk!

I have had a C.F. Burkheimer blank recommended to me to build on by a supplier over to the left of the page, but I have never heard of this company before. I sure like the idea of supporting an American company manufacturing their own blanks! I certainly trust the supplier- just one of those situations where I don't know what I don't know.... I wonder if there is any feedback for me about

Thanks for your replies to my birch ring arbor question. I have both types of arbors arriving thru the mail and will end up choosing one. The graphite arbors I am familiar with, and I think I have handled the poly arbors once some time ago. I recall them as being ... foamier? And so Roger's response makes me wonder if the harder graphite might enhance sensitivity. Again, I may be gilding the

Perhaps it is only gilding the lily, but I am considering using an arbor to lighten up birch rings being used as cork on a 4 wt fly rod. Assuming it is really worth the bother, would there be a preference for using a graphite vs polyurethane arbor? Thanks,

Thanks for the input. I wouldn't want to impugn the reputation of Bubble Buster or Mud Hole. I have great respect for Mud Hole and am sure they sell only good stuff. I don't have trouble with fish eyes, so I was surprised when my epoxy wanted to migrate. The only difference I am aware of was this is my first try with the spray. For my first try I probably was way too close to the surface a

Could fish eyes be a result of over enthusiastic spraying of the Bubble Buster spray?

Thank you for the advise. I love this forum. It is an all metal seat. I would never have though of looking for pins. Coming in from the front after turning down the original cork, which evidently met up with a mouse, is a great idea. Why didn't I think of that? The critter was kind enough to leave the rest of the rod alone.

I have an heirloom bamboo rod, 1940's vintage. Not a high quality rod for its time, but never used. Is suffering from age and neglect. I am going to spruce it up and fish it- or maybe just hang it. To replace the cork, I'd like to remove and salvage the seat. I am wondering how to remove the seat? I understand the procedure for modern rods, but wonder if that would be abusive for the cane?

Watching the History channel- fellas catching allegators using chicken for bait on a line hanging into a swamp from a pole...... What kind of pole is that? A fishing pole? What is the pole? I have to say, I'd much rather deal with bears! Yikes! All about what you know I guess!

William is right- just want to have the capability to back up a few turns. If I have to get up to go flip a switch, then I might as well just hand roll it back as I do now. My arm isn't long enough to grab a thick enough part of the rod to make reverse manual twisting all that easy when working the pointy end of a long blank!

Is there such a thing as a reversing thread lathe- step on a different (or different section of) the pedal and have it slowly reverse direction? Cuz if so, I really, really want one!

A little glitter goes a long way! Defining 'a little' is hard... but I have found if I take what looks like a little and then divide that amount by half, it turns out right. Make a trial batch and see. Too much glitter is not a good outcome!

I just had the same experience, and believe I figured out the source of contamination. I use small cans of compressed air intended to dust out electronics. A full can blasting dust off a rod causes no trouble, but milking the dregs of a can does. Took a couple of sanding replays & a fresh air can to resolve.

I am curious to know what the characteristics of a kayak blank are? I have had fun with salmon towing my canoe around off the beach in Valdez- a mini Nantucket sleigh ride- but I bet that's even more fun from a 'yak... Tnx,

I covered my maderia with CP and then Permagloss. Let it sit for a couple of weeks and came back with epoxy. No troubles.

I like the color of the blank I found, but I don't know what to compare the value of the blank to...... is this an entry level kind of blank, an average okay - dokay kind of blank, or is it a good thing to obtain given the chance?

Check out Elkhorn Rods. They have a very nice color shade of pink rods and blanks- without being "Barbie PInk". Much more suitable for big girls than the Barbie shades. Also a very elegant lavender shade and a spicy red as well. Elkhornflyrodandreel.com

For helping a newbie build a first rod they are terrific. For catching about 2 gazillion salmon in the hands of my children they have been wonderfully resistant to abuse. If everything provided that service for the buck... !

You'd be surprised how fast you can learn to NOT cut yourself with a double edged razor and how little attention is actually required. I don't pay particular attention, don't tape the off side and don't cut myself. The good part is they are sharper than the single edge blades and still (for now) available at the grocery store. If there is a down side..... when you drop it in your lap you shoul

Hard knocks sometimes cause blisters on my stripper canoe. Instead of cutting out the blister and patching, I have been using syringes to inject the PG into the blister. Certainly faster, certainly less scare left. No issues, so I am thinking it works for at least for this kind of work!
