Good news and bad..... mostly bad. First:: I up graded the Apple computer to operating system 10.5.7 and the only thing that doesn't work is it won't open this site. Tells me Safari can't connect to the server. Same deal with FIrefox. Worked fine before? Is the ONLY site that doesn't open. What's up with that? This is the only essential site I need to open! Second; I just bought

I appreciate the help so far, but I guess I wasn't clear enough to help you help me... I am not suffering from excess epoxy but from an irregular shaped rim on the ring end of the guide. Puzzled as to how to get that perfect ramp down from thread to rod when the space under the guide ring is so small and close to the rod. Was using the end of an awl to reach into that cramped space to attemp

I am getting very confident with my epoxy and didn't think twice about applying it to very small single foot guides for the first time today. Poor prior planning led to a serious uh-oh getting it applied smoothly under the 'overhang' of the guide ring. The coffee filter dosed with alcohol keeps getting whacked by the ring as the rod spins around. Had to give it up for now and will have to revi

I would prefer something a little more comfortable stuck in my gut when battling king salmon with casting or spinning rods than the little black plastic cap- but I don't understand what it is I should use. I am familiar with the detachable fighting butts for fly rods, but I'm not sure how you would attach such a thing to a casting or spinner?

I am glad to learn this cuz my page 50 attempts have been driving me crazy. Short drive tho! Thanks for the word on the fixes! Love the book anyway!

A college kid at CSU in Fort Collins outside my daughter's apartment window sitting in a tree casting pine cones at the squirrels and messing with them across the lawn in games of catch that pine cone if you can! She thought he was cute....

I really like that article, especially the white trim on blue photos and went to replicate it. Turned out fine until I hit it with CP. Does white thread absorb CP differently from other threads or did it swell and expand because it isn't supported by neighboring bands of thread? It went wacky on me each time even trying to use tiny dots of the CP to 'spot weld' it down before coming back with

My fly rod sometimes casts itself as well as the line. I am not sure how to proceed with a repair? Thanks for any guidance!

I have been thinking about initiating a thread that thanks Karry for his product advise for some time. It appears now is the time. Where I live there is only one (somewhat limited) stocking parts source and while I appreciate the proprietor's assistance, I see interesting parts in the sponsor's catalogs but frequently get lost in the nomenclature - esp for guides. Example: the last King Salmo

Is (was?) bamboo ever used to make casting/spinning rods? I was reading the recent question about where to buy bamboo blanks to build on and decided it was better to ask a perhaps goofy question than to not know! Thanks,

Thanks Gentlemen, I like that Turkshead idea a lot, but will probably go with the tape & taper while I put learning the knot on the back burner for now.

I have some cork tape for grips to experiment with but I don't have in mind how you finish the ends? I didn't come up with results doing a search of pictures or question threads, yet I know this question has been answered here before..... Thanks for a steer in the right direction.

Might have been a fluke, but I found it came flying off a rod that I was wiping clean with an alcohol soaked cotton ball. Did not want it to soften and come right off but it sure did. Have been nervous with alcohol around PG ever since. Fluke deal or the real deal I don't know!

Suppose a hobbiest has become skilled enough that people are increasingly making requests that a rod be built for them. If you simply bill them for the expense of the parts with no labor charge or profit being made of any kind.... on the theory that the opportunity to develop skills using other people's materials is reward enough at the moment, does one become liable for the tax collection issu

Maybe it is a cool weather thing- here in North Pole, Alaska, it takes forever during the winter but is only taking about 1/2 as long this summer. About the same length of time as Flexcoat. The thin stuff takes even longer than the thicker build.

I picked up a couple to play with. My junior high aged son used one to build his first rod. Has been used extensively catching pink salmon in Alaska. Has been a great deal!

Thanks Billy.... and as elementary as this question is, you'd think fancy wraps would be out of my league. Your book is terrific however, and I am having great success with it! I appreciate your time.

On guide styles where one leg of the guide is longer than the other, is it customary to make the under layer and over wraps the same length on each side of the guide so all looks symmetrical or is the short leg wrapped .... shorter? If symmetrical, is there a faster avenue of attack to determine lengths rather than trial and error? Have tried math & measurement, have tried drawings &

Gee, wish I was an expert, but for me, regular Thread Master takes 8 hours, and the lite takes 12 to 16 hours to be tack free in a 68 to 70 degree room. Takes so long that airborne fuzz has twice as much time to cause me trouble. No trouble mixing 1 cc batches with 4 minutes of hand mixing. Love having zero bubble issues. Another couple days to be solid to the touch. Overall I am liking it

Hi John, The advice given so far is all good..... but it really depends on where you will be fishing. Some rivers up here have a lot of fishing pressure and current too.- think of the Kenai - a popular tourist destination. In those cases the heavier rod is good advice for taking care of business without offending those around you. For many other locations it would be way over kill and tot

This is easy. My work is my least favorite! Having made maybe 15 rods now, I look at my first few I was SO proud of and I cringe! Then I look at what I am doing now and I wonder where will I be in another 15 rods? I can't wait to find out! I need more brothers in law to give my learner rods away to! And yet, the fellas like what I am doing enough that they will buy the parts if I build

-50 F today here in North Pole, AK with NO wind chill- just an honest -50. Have a rod drying close to the fireplace. Opened the door to throw in some more wood, a bit of a down draft...... some fine white ash swirled. Yep- that's where it went. Ok Tom, no bad language from me, but even Rudolph is disgusted with our weather!

Neat idea. Want to give it a try. When mounting the reel seat, how do I keep the epoxy or Rod Bond from leaking (or smearing) into the area opened for art work? How is the open window then sealed up? Since less of the reel seat is epoxied to the rod or supported by bushings, is this a better idea for light service rods than a hard working rod? Thanks and Happy Holidays to all!

Spenser has the right idea! Let her pick! My daughter picked what I thought were nuts colors and only available in silk thread, and ( to me) looked no better than so-so in the house. Out on the generally overcast sky waters of Prince William Sound it looks terrific. Girls just know stuff. But the thought has often ocurred since then, that in her eyes the colors aren't what matters to her.

I used Permagloss on a painted rod to protect the paint. Later, prior to epoxy on the threads, I used alcohol to clean things up. Off came the Permagloss. Don't know if this was a one time unusual thing, but it sure was a horrifying thing in my situation!

I recently used a Testor's cap to replace my broken plastic Permagloss cap. Got to thinking about the screw in a small paint can preservation technique I have read about here. Would a screw in the metal Testor's cap accomplish the same thing?

The next thing about rod building I want to learn is how to size the grips to the user. Length of cork to put the reel the right distance from the butt, and anything else there is to learn about this aspect of rod building. Haven't made progress searching- perhaps not using the right terms. Any guidance on finding the info is appreciated. Thanks,
