On my last couple of builds there appear to be small pin pricks along the length of the epoxy. Granted my epoxy is a little old at this point but I have never seen this before. They are very tiny but evident when the rod turns under the light. They lessen with each coat. I'm using Flex Coat High Build in my garage in Florida. :-) Any ideas what might be causing this? Thank you.

Hello everyone, With my brand of wrapper it becomes difficult to wrap the area between the butt cap and the rear grip. Is there a way to extend the south end of the rod so it becomes easier to wrap this area? I'm using a Sulleys rod wrapper and I love it for everything else. Also, I've seen the blank extenders advertised on different sites but I don't think that they will work here because I alr

Hello everyone. Can you point me to a "checklist" to help someone decide what type of rod they are after? A "customer checklist" of sorts although this would not be for a "customer" per se. Many thanks.

Guys, I'm pretty much sold on your description of the Aero reel seat. Question: I have small hands (no jokes please) - what size Aero reel seat would go best with a MHX CB841? Many thanks.

Hello everyone, I have to mail two completed 7ft saltwater trout rods. What is the fastest, most convenient way to do this? For example, could "going Postal" handle the entire thing? If I need to buy Home Depot PVC, what width, schedule, etc should I look for? Thank you very much. John M.

Hello everyone, I am hoping you can give me a recommendation for an MHX blank that might be appropriate for this style of fishing. The rod I build is for my son and here is his application. Fishing in an inshore lagoon on the East coast of Florida for large redfish in the 20 to 30 lb. range. He uses dead bait and fishes in 6-10 foot of water. He will be in a boat (as opposed to a kayak or

I guess b/c it seems to cast a lot further than what I was using previously, an MHX Custom Blend 7' rod. Thanks

Hello everyone, I've had success building off of the 7' 6" MHX L902 for saltwater trout from a kayak. I really like the blank but my question is simply, "What is a step up from this blank?" Is there something lighter, more sensitivity, casts further with soft plastics? I'm looking to experiment a little but stay close to what I know works. I'm looking for something that essenti

Hello everyone, Awhile back I built a split reel spinning rod on a MHX CB841. I used a Fuji SKSPSM Split Spinning Reel Seat and now the smaller piece (the one closest to the tip) has loosened and spins freely around the blank. I've never had any component come loose on me before so this is a new experience. As I spin it around the blank and move it up and down a bit I notice an adhesive residue

Hi, I’m looking for suggestions on guide alignment on a 4 piece fly rod blank. Do you add the guides to each piece then make sure they align with each other **on that individual piece** or do you add them to the entire length of the fly rod blank and align them all together at the end. Thank you.

When I examined my fly rod after the curing process was complete, glue had oozed up through the reel seat and was on the locking mechanism thread and the groove part that the reel foot fits in. Using my fingernail I was able to get most of it off the thread but it is still blocking one of the grooves that the reel foot fits into. What would you do to get that out of there? Many thanks.

Hello everyone, I've been building for almost 8 years but this will be my first fly rod. What is a good way to start? I see kits from Mudhole that look very attractive and I have no problem beginning there if others think that it is a good idea. I want something light for panfish or crappie. I want to get started but I'll wait to see what the members here have to say on the subject. Many than

What a great post. As a kid, I absolutely had to have this "rod." I knew it would be better than anything that I used in the past. I strapped it to my bicycle and rode three miles up and down hills in order to get to the pond that I knew would give me a big bass for my efforts. When I made my first cast I instantly knew that I had made a terrible mistake. What did WC Fields say about p

Happy New Year everyone, After sanding and reaming my cork I wash it off with Simple green and a soft tooth brush then rinse it with fresh water. How long do I wait to use the cork? It's been a couple days so far. Many thanks.

Hi, I have a set of dream reamers that I bought from one of the bigger retailers listed in the left side bar. Unfortunately it keeps coming loose from the handle when I use it. Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a fix that someone might be able to suggest to me? Epoxy in the handle perhaps? Thank you.

I need the same gold color that is used in the University of Central Florida colors. The other color is black so that's easy. When I try and match up my current gold color thread to their gold, none of it seems to come close. Can anyone give me a recommendation for a thread color that is close to UCF's gold? Thank you.

I have the standard cork jigs that allow me to cut out wedges or cut thin slices off the cork but what if I want to simply cut a ring in half. By way of example, I have the standard 1/2" thickness cork ring and I want to turn it into two 1/4" thickness rings. I tried shimming it up with washers but I cannot seem to get it exact plus I don't like cutting across the top of the cork jig. C

How do I do a static deflection test on a bait casting rod? When I tried it right now and added load (hope I'm using the term correctly), the last five or six guides all went to the bottom of the rod. To get set up for my test I used surgical tubing to anchor the guides in place then I wrapped some 1/4" tape around them as added security. Obviously that didn't help. What am I doing wrong

Is it possible to buy older, no longer produced blanks? A friend of mine asked me to find him a G-Loomis HSR 9000S Med Light 6-12 lb, X-Fast tip rod. Where could I look for this rod? Thank you. John M.

When I cut slices with my cork jig I'm using my fingers as downward pressure and then the saw is applying horizontal pressure. The result is that the cork jig slides around on the table top. Do any of you guys have something that you lay down under the cork jig to keep it from sliding around? Many thanks. John M.

I have a wood turner friend of mine who helps me turn down cork and now acrylic. The sequence that is important to this story is as follows. 1. I glue up the cork at home. 2. I take it to my buddy's house and he turns down the cork for me. 3. I take it back home and ream it for the rod that I'm building. Everything is hunky dory. Now enter acrylic into the equation. Steps 1 and 2 are the

When test casting a rod I use tape for the guides and the tip top. The guides stay on fine but the tip top keeps coming off. How do you affix the tip top to the blank so it stays on long enough for few test casts? Thanks very much. John M.
