Looking to move my dust generating work out of my wrapping and finishing area. Would prefer a new lathe with a live center instead of rollers for this. I'd like to do other small woodworking on this machine.
How far between centers would you want in a lathe for your rod grip turning needs?

I am torn between the Renzetti and the CPW. I have been hand wrapping up till now ,but don't want to buy something that I will want to upgrade later so these are my two choices. Also What are the pro/cons to the different dryer speeds (ie. 4rmp 18rpm) and do the dryers on these have slip clutches.
Also if anyone has one of the two that they are willing to part with Please let me know.

Here is a recent photo of a DC Pittman gear motor that I have built up for a power wrapper.
Also, note the attached DC power supply with on/off switch and reversing switch on the supply.
The pedal is used to change the dc voltage going to the motor which changes the speed from 0 to the motors maximum speed.
This setup is not suitable for handle turning, but only power wrapping. All of the

I'm looking to purchase a new lathe for cork work and also considering turning my own reel seats. I know a lot of you use lathes from Harbor Freight. My question,,, is the 5 speed bench top wood lathe they sell for $199 (item #65345) precision enough to handle reel seat work??? Comments please.
Thanks

I have a new to me lathe, but am now struggling to figure out which work holding accessories I need to produce obviously rod handles (more so spinning / casting), pens and bottle stoppers and possibly some game calls. I will mention that I do NOT have a drill press. I have been looking at a 4 jaw chuck that would have optional jaws to use for boring (in conjunction with a MT drill chuck) and ot

I have an opportunity to buy a new Excelsior Lath with an extension for a very attractive price. Both the head stock and tail stock are fitted for MT2 accessories. The reviews seem quite good on the lathe.
Does any one on the forum have any first hand experience with this lathe.
In doing some searches, it appears to be the same imported lathe that is being sold under a few different

I was saving up to buy a good power wrapper, but now I've decided to build one this fall/winter. I'm moving back to wky, about 10 mins from KY and Barkley Lakes, where my parents and in-laws are at. With the move I gain access to welding equipment, bandsaws, industrial equipment through my dad and millwright equipment through my dad's cousin. So with their help, and what I've learned through t

70. SCroll Chucks
Good day to all. I've constructed a few fly rods and spinning rods with purchased components. I am now moving to advance my skills by learning to turn cork and reel seat inserts. I own a Jet 1014 mini lathe but do not have a scroll chuck. I tried turning a cork handle on a 1/4 " threaded rod but stopped before ruining the cork. I can salvage it by using the proper tooling. I have no exp

Hello,
I've been asked to help determine a value of some custom rods and accessories and my search has led me here. I know very little about any of this so please be patient with me. This ladies late husband was very much into building rods in the 80's and early 90's and she now has someone interested in purchasing everything from her but she isn't sure what would be a fair price for both partie

I now have the Jet 1220 lathe. Now I need to add some accessories. What accessories do you all recommend? What are you basic ones needed, and what are the ones that are nice to have but not necessarily needed?
I have the following:
I bought a NOVA2 chuck and insert this last week (on sale at woodcraft for $139).

73. Which lathe...
Okay, I'm at that point in my rodbuilding journey that it's time for a lathe, but which one? I'd love to have a Jet, but that's a bit on the high end of what I want to spend on just a machine. I've been looking at a Grizzly or a Central Machinery (Harbor Freight). The machines look identical, as if they were made in the same factory under different brands. Has anyone had any experience with t

I usually glue up my cork rings on my rods for the grips and then turn the rod on my rod lathe. They turn out nice but if something goes wrong in the shaping I have quit a process starting over. I have a Jet mimi lathe and a renzetti rod lathe and wanted to try turning the cork on a mandrel. I thought I had seen articles in RM magazine but I can not remember. Do you just glue up cork with rod bon

I continue to look into purchasing a new or used mini lathe. Having some, but limited metal & wood working skills, I want to select a quality mini lathe that I only need to buy once, one that can accept a full range of accessories that would be very versatile for most if not all aspects of building fly rods in the 0 to 10 weight range. Can one mini lathe do the following: shape wood/cork/c

I'm considering purchasing a mini lathe to help in my rod building. I've done enough things by hand and would prefer to move on to a more precise and efficient means to turn handles, make inserts, and possibly create some of my own components. Will $200 to $500 get me something decent with an extension bed? What brand/model have you found to be the most versatile, well built, and reasonably pr

I could use some suggestions for lathe tool storage for my new jet mini with extended bed on jet stand. I've gone from an old lathe mounted to a bench where I had everything handy to this and now could use some ideas to get me organized and keep my tools close.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi all,
A friend has asked me to building him a rod which has 16' rear grips using a 14" pre-shaped rear eva grip (concave) from mudhole but I will be 2" short. Im thinking of using 2" piece of eva with a trim ring so that the join is much nicer with a somewhat seamless join. Naturally, I will need to find some kind of ring that is of same outer dia as the eva. Im not to sure of

I have a bunch of rings to use for handles that need to be sanded flat.
Any ideas for jigs or ideas to get these rings flat and uniform with minimum hassle?
I don't want to use a hand sander. I just want something that I can use a disk, or belt or oscillating sander that will quickly level all of the handle rings uniformly.
It doesn't work to try to hold the rings by hand, because one

Just purchased a Delta 46-460 lathe mostly for grip turning and not sure of which chuck to buy (Nova G3, 3-jaw, 4-jaw, mini?). So many options it seems, much different from my Grizzly hobby lathe days! Mainly turn cork on a 1/4" mandrel but also plan to turn reel seats, acrylic inserts, etc. Thanks for any and all suggestions - very appreciated!

Just purchased a jet mini lathe(model 1014) and am going to attempt to turn my first cork handle. The lathe has several different pulleys to adjust the speed by simply moving the belt. The speed range includes 500-3975 RPM. Any advice would be welcomed!! Thanks in advance.

Is anyone using this hobby lathe to turn cork grips on? It's similar to the Flexcoat cork lathe which uses an electric drill as the power source. Thanks in advance Bill

Ok, so who make good quality pre formed cork grips.? I'm still mulling over weather to get a Hobby lathe , full metal mini lathe or wood lathe with accessories. It's the cost of the full mini lathes that's getting to me. For 400 you can buy a lot of pre formed grips. However, I still like the idea of making my own grip. Thanks Bill

I would like to turn my own grips but the price of a mini lathe or a Pac Bay wrapper set up for turning would buy a lot of pre shaped grips. So, that my dilemma what to do? Most of the pre formed grips that I have bought have not been of the best quality. I spent around $30 for the fly rod grips. I don't make that many rods but it would be fun to make a rod with grips that I have turned myself.

90. lathe questions
Looking at a lathe to turn just cork and eva, not sure what to look for though. Id like to have enough length to make handles for swimbait rods, so would a 20" between centers be good? Also, what is the advantage to having a different speed settings when turning? Thanks
