I was wondering if anyone has used the Penn State Woodturners 3-Jaw Micro Chuck( I think this is the link ) and how it handles cork and wood turning mandrels compared to say a drill chuck?
Thanks,
Tony

A number of weeks back, I was asking advice for a portable transportable drill based lathe so that I can easily carry it. The normal mini lathe approaching 100 lbs is just too heavy.
I'm not very content with the drill solution. So I'm looking for a light weight but true lathe. This is ONLY for shaping cork so horsepower is really quite irrelevant - as long as it spins smoothly and everythin

124. Thanks Mike Barkley
I have two former students graduating this year and both have earned college scholarships for softball. My little Grizzly lathe is not really capable of turning wood, so asked my ol buddy Mike Barkley if he could turn a couple of mini bats for me. Typical Mike..... he'd never done one before but said he'd give it a try. I then wrapped them in school colors with feathers, metallic trims, angle

126. Turning Squares
Tom I noticed that when you are ready to retrieve the wood Hardener mix you have to cut away the mold. To me that is a waste of a good mold. Why not cut your mold in half length wise. Then use a release agent covering the inside of the mold. Wonce the release agent has been applied, clamp the 2 haves together and fill with hardener. Now wonce it is curried just release the clamps and take out the

Have Pac Bay wrapper with the upgraded chuck. I occasionally use it to turn cork grips. Internal jaws on chuck will barely grab a 1/4" mandrel. So, I put a few winds of tape around it so's it'll grab. This often slips and/or may cause some wobble/off centering, etc. Jaws also don't want to hold on to a 5/16" bare mandrel very well either. Anybody got any ideas on chuckin up this m

Does anyone use their Renzetti lathe for light wood turning? I am thinking of changing to a Renzetti from my Custom Power Wrap. Wondering if I can do light wood turning for winding checks, split grips etc on the Renzetti. Can't turn wood on the CPW.
Anything else pro or con you would like to say about the Renzetti would be appreciated. Seems like I am going to be spending a LOT of money for all

I have an old wood lathe that my Father owned. It is a Montgomery Ward lathe which gives you some idea as to the age of the unit. The question that I have is were can I buy a chuck for it? The chuck will have to take a 1/2" shaft with a set screw,i.e. not a screw on chuck.
I hope I have made myself clear as to what I'm looking for, not very good with words.

130. mini lathe
looking for a mini lathe. I had bought one from Harbor freight, but I burnt out the motor after 2 years. This lathe is used only to turn balsa, for floats. I really do not need a very expensive one .

I am looking at making some custom spey grips and am in need of a lathe now. I am torn between buying a cheap one from somewhere like harbor frieght for 100.00 or so or making my own. I have a small 1550 rpm motor from a rock tumbleing kit that I think may work but I will have to find a way to 'build it'
Question is am I better off picking one up or making my own. I do not want to spend as much

There is a variable speed conversion available for the jet delta and turncrafter lathes. I am wondering if anyone has done this, how hard is it and how well does it work. The ads indicate the need for drilling a hole in the motor mount. I have never been very successful in drilling metal but now I have more tools available. I am particularly interested in the low end range. Is it really true

I want to start turning my own grips , however I don't build that many rods. So I'm leaning toward a Power Wrapper to do this rather than a small metal lathe. I've gotten by all these years with a hand wrapper so I'm wondering if the lathe might be better for what I want to do. Thanks Bill

Since I will soon have the materials to put all of my research to use I just need the answers to a few problems that I cannot figure out. For one thing, how do I figure out what size winding check i will need. Is there a specific height on the blank that I can measure the diameter at? or do I have to put the whole handle together first and then measure and then send for the winding check?

I am fairly new at rod building and am wanting to build a custom St. Croix SCIII cranking stick. I want a no forgrip, straight handle. I like the look of a shaped rubber cork ring to accent the butt of the rod. The ones I have looked at on mudhole come with no hole or a 1/4 in hole. I like the look of the st. croix butt caps on the avid models. How do I get mine to look similar?

Tonight I screwed up two expensive fly rod handles (the fancy ones with colored wooden hosels) trying to enlarge the the center hole. On both handles the hosels split when I was trying to drill them out with a drill or a rat tail file.
Any ideas on how to successfully elarge the center hole would be greatfully appreciated.

I just installed my first eva grip. The problem is the eva is about an 1/8 in. bigger than the reel seat. So im wondering what is the best way to get it down to the size of the seat? I was thinking about sanding it but i think that is going to take a long time.

Tom,
I recall from an earlier post you metioned something about turning components in the upcoming issue of 11-5. I have had it with donig stuff by hand and am going to finally pull the trigger on a small lathe. Without giving away the details of what is in the issue what lathe would meet the criteria for these and all other rodbuilding projects?
thanks,
