I bought an inexpensive mini/midi wood lathe— yes, that 'Central Machinery' 10 x 18 job. Figured it would be fine for the light duty of cork and reel seat insert turning. I'm having trouble finding a small, (2 or 3 inch), self-centering 3 or 4-jaw chuck for it though. Has a 3/4 X 10 TPI (oddball) spindle and a 3 in. backplate with 4 mounting holes. I like the fact that the spindle is hollow so

93. Fly Rod Grips
First off, Hello to everyone, I am new to this forum. I want to build a new fly rod and was considering a wooden grip. I really do not want to go through the expnse of buying a lathe and the accessories needed to accpmplish this. My question is, are there any members who do this, and are there any drawbacks to using a wood grip.? I have a few really nice pieces of Kingwood that I think would loo

Ok...bear with me on this one:
Today on Craigs list I FINALLY found a good lathe for very cheap. I bought a Jet 1014 mini lathe, the extension bed, and the metal lathe stand all for $225. This is the only caveat: The guy I bought it from said that the last time he used it, it was losing power when he was turning with it. Starting up it would get up to speed just fine, but as soon as he add

Has anyone ever used this for cork turning? If so, what did ya think? Great price for only $46 so I'll probably buy it instead of spending $200+ on a lathe.

Was working at my mini-lathe and failed to slide the tail-stock up against my mandrel. Initially, was working at the slowest speed doing a bit of sanding on the wood piece. No problems at first with the larger mandrel staying true but as soon as I dialed up the turning speed by simply turning the knob on the variable speed control all @#$%& broke loose!
The mandrel went all cadywompus (bent a

The crude way I'm turning grips is time consuming and not precise enough for my liking. I've read through the archives and see many topics on mini lathes. All good background info. Missed a smoking opportunity at a used Jet the other day. After driving driving an hour to see the seller, he answers the door to tell me he's sold it to a neighbor! Grrrrrr!
So I'm looking for a plan B. Stopped by

I have a Renzetti Rod lathe and I just ordered the newer motor and foot pedal setup. Man do they charge a ton of money for this stuff. Everything Renzetti sells cost a fortune????? Anyway I forgot to order another drivebelt at the same time....DUH! So I was wondering if anyone here has found an alternate cheap source for the mini V-belt that is used on the Renzetti Lathe. I have searched around t

I am considering replacing my Custom Power Wrap with a Renzetti. I just looked at the prices and am going through sticker shock. I bought my CPW about 15 years ago. For those of you that own a Renzetti how many upright standards will I need to turn down a cork grip where the rings/square cork stock, is already glued on to the blank? The Renzetti comes with two standards but I can't believe that t

Hi all,
I have a 15 year old special needs son who loves all things fishing. I've been contemplating Rod Building as something we can enjoy together while at the same time learning a new skill together. I've been researching rod building and lurking in this forum for a few months now as well. I've studied the threads relating to beginners and have socialized them with my son.

Does anyone know of any companies, or people, who can do custom machining for rod parts? I am using autocad to create some butt caps and reel seat caps to connect to the hood and am hoping to get them made for fairly cheap. Any help would be great guys. Thanks!

Anyone have a Rikon mini lathe or any experience with one? I was supposed to be picking up a nice delta midi today, but the seller backed out on me. I have been looking at these online and they have very good reviews. I have never owned or used a wood lathe and will be using one to turn grips of various materials, any help would be appreciated

108. lathe tools question
I just ordered and received my Sorby tools.
Went with a 1/8" parting tool (13") long and
1/2" spindle gouge and 3/4" roughing gouge, both (18") long.
The gouges seem awful big and long, are these correct for rod building
or should I have ordered "mini" tools?
The cheaper tools I saw at PSI were a lot shorter.

I was wondering if anyone makes a bed extension for the smaller, more portable mini lathes(the ones with 12" or so between centers) like the Penn State Turncrafter Plus and similar sized models?
If not,has anyone here ever made their own for little lathes like these?
Thanks,
Tony

110. lathe - new user
I currently use a bench top drill press turned on it's side as my "lathe" and threaded rods as mandrels.
It does an OK job for reshaping pre-made gripsand the like but I notice things can get out of round easily.
I've been reading about lathes and viewing the amazing work I find on this site.
I build about 20 rods a year and am adicted to rod building.
Is investing in a small l

Clearing out the last of the oldest RodMaker back issues, I have 6 early issues that are too few in number to put or keep on the website. I can make up a few sets for those interested and sell them at less than cost just to move them on out.
So, $15 gets these 6 issues plus free USPS Priority Mail shipping (That’s $5 right there).
They have been separated into sets. All 6 issues for $15

I've decided to get a metal mini lathe instead of a wood lathe and wondered what's a good brand ? In my opinion you have greater flexibility with a metal lathe than a wood lathe hence the decision to get one. Perhaps, I'm a little swayed by the fact that I used to run CNC lathes and Millers at one time in my various careers. Bill

I am going to get a mini lathe and start using my rod wrapper for...wrapping rods.
The economics of the Penn State Industries products are hard to beat and I have heard good things about them. I was curious about the following.
1. Do I really need a Variable Speed (VS) lathe if I am turning only cork or wood grips?
2. Is there anything more klugey, difficult about PSI's system for changin

Shaping cork grip on a lathe is one of the more enjoyable aspects of rod building for me.
However, I don't really enjoying having to square up cork rings as I do it by hand on sand paper currently. A bit tedious. Good thing cork is soft.
Cork rings are sometimes not squared, or have a rough torn up face that won't glue smoothly so these have to be squared. How do you guys do this? Is t

I had to replace the bearings and MT1 on my lathe.
It was a very very snug fit and I doubt I'll ever be able to pull it out again....
Here's the problem. My spindle has a different taper than the original MT1. Since I don't have a MT2, I wonder if they sent me the wrong taper.
Here's what I'm experiencing. With my chuck in, it rocks a bit. This means the taper I received is not as

I know that the lathe questions have been beat to death but I have one that I havent seen asked yet. Dones anyone have any experience with the Ridgid wl1200? It looks like it would be very easy to change the belt positions and looks like a quality lathe. I have a friend who has one and is in a tight spot, the lathe is basically new and he wants 250 for it. I was told that they sale for around 450
