Lathe turning speed for cork handles

Just purchased a jet mini lathe(model 1014) and am going to attempt to turn my first cork handle. The lathe has several different pulleys to adjust the speed by simply moving the belt. The speed range includes 500-3975 RPM. Any advice would be welcomed!! Thanks in advance.

1500 to 2000 RPM is ideal for turning and shaping cork.

My advice would be to purchase Andy Dear's DVD. It specifically relates to lathe use in our craft.

John,
When you are just starting, it is not a bad idea to run on the slow side - i.e. closer to the 1500 rpm speed. You can develop your techniques and "touch" at this speed. But, I think that you will find, that as you get more proficient, and learn the "touch" you will likely increase the speed to the maximum speed of the lathe.

The slower turning speed will allow for a wider variation in the use of tool, sand paper, and application force before doing significant changes in the work in progress.

As the turning speed increases, you have to have a more finesse touch, to get the effect that you want. But, the faster speed, allows the practiced turner to turn out more product more quickly. But the down side of a faster turning piece, is that a heavy hand, or a wrong tool can more quickly "wreck" the work in project.

Welcome to the world of "turning." Enjoy it because it can be very very satisfying.

Take care
Roger
