when spining large tuna rods, 80# and greater, I have found that placing the tip in the palm of one hand with the butt on the floor and rolling until it jumps into place to works. Only question I have is that when the rod jumps to the favored edge, isnt that off the spine and why is favors to that bend? The stiffer edge would be just before the jump, where the material has overlapped. Any sugg

I am about to build my first rod, after practicing this winter my wraps and finishes, I am ready. It will be a Sage 596-4 SLT. My question is... Do the white dots on the blank sections have any reference to the spine and/or guide location. I can not find any info on the Sage web page, does anyone have any advice for a new builder? Thanks, Gary Gill.

I may have asked this before so bear with me. When you are flexing and rolling a blank to find the spine side is it considered the flat spot opposite the curve where it kind of stops when you roll it? I've read conflicting tutorials on the subject.

There's an interesting thread on the Bass Fishing Home Page (http://www.wmi.org/bassfish/bassboard/rods_reels/T35209.htm#26) discussing, from both the customer's and builder's viewpoints, what to do when you order a custom rod, pay for and receive it, but the blank is unacceptably crooked. What should you do as a customer? What should you do as a builder? The comments posted on BFHP are quite var

Thanks to Tom Kirkman and Don Morton for their help with my issue but things look worse now at least to me. In following Don's direction to flex the blank with the guides in the up (on top) position, I decided to make a wooden jig to hold the blank while flexing it. I got even more creative and took two bearings, stuff them into a plastic sleeve, clamped it to my jig to hold the butt end so the e

I have a 10' 4 pc Sage blank that I'm having a problem understanding the spine in the 30" tip section. I have a traditional double bearing spine finder that I use to locate spines rather easily, however it seems my tip section has two spines 180 degrees apart. I've attached my tip top inline with what I feel is the most predominate spine. I usually start with the equal angle/increasing angl

So now that we have determined that the Dan Craft multi-piece rods come with the spine marked, what do the marks signify? Is that the line you put the guides on or is it the other side? This is turning out to be a nightmare. Making multi piece rods is a pain in the rear. Due to the confusion I have come to a screaching halt. The grip (I did Rattan over cork) and butt wrap have been done fo

I am building a 4 weight 5 piece fly rod (Dan Craft) and cannot begin to find the spine on any section. Most are just too stiff and the one that will flex does not seem to favor any side. Should I just build it? Spencer

I have read and re-read the FAQ's about spine. When you put a bend in the blank, it forms a curve. Does one put fly rod guides on the inside the curve or on the outside of the curve? If that is a matter of opinion, what do most poeple do most of the time? Bill

I’m continuing Stan Massey’s subject to put it back in the limelight. I know I know we have gone in circles on this subject but there’s just something I’m still confused about here. Wouldn't the best way to find the presumable so-called spine be to put the tip of the blank on the ground and push down from the butt? Or to put the blank into a PCV type device at a slight angle and apply wei

Hi I recently got lucky with an insurance policy that actually paid out, so I decided to invest the cash in blanks for personal use, rather than domestic cleaning appliances, and other such treasures found in Home Depot type stores. I have just had delivered a Sage 9 foot 10 wt Xi2 salt water blank. Sage have very dutifully marked each section of the blank, and the spine in the tip section is b

Tom, I read your posts on "spine" with interest. In view of your results with a casting machine indicating that the so called "spine" has no significant effect on casting accuracy or other performance characteristics, would you advocate abandoning placement of guides according to this criterion? In my opinion, it is long overdue that the contoversial spine concept was put to a

Tom's reply to a post by Kim Norblad on spine location was an eye opener. I know that spine location has been hashed an rehashed, but what Tom appears to say is that the curve of the blank has more to do with casting accuracy than spine location. It would be nice if we had a precise method of testing a lot of the commonly held beliefs in rod building. What size should the stripper on a spinning

I have just started building a 3pc 10ft blank and having a bit of trouble figuring out where the spine on this particular rod is.I don't have a spine finder or anything so I have been simply using the hand/flat surface method. I've spined numerous other blanks and never had a problem but this one seems to not want to cooperate. When I roll it,it has 2 destictive ridges or spots where the blank wa

I recently acquired a Sage 0-wt blank. The blank came with alignment dots which did not line up with the Spline. One section was bang on, one was 90 degrees clockwise off and the other 90 degrees counter clockwise off. I checked the Sage website, and they say the dots are aligned so that the straightest rod results, and in this case that is true - a very straight blank. When I align the secti

How do you find the spine on a 4, 5 or 6 piece. The method I use is to bend slightly the section and find its point of resistance by rolling in the palm of my hand. Since a multiple piece has shorter sections which are stiffer and harder to flex like this how can I find the spine? Do all factory blanks come marked with the spine as Sage does?

Hi all, Just received my DanCraft 7pc blank today (very fast shipping). I am very impressed with the quality. Feels light, straight as an arrow and looks to have very nice matte black finish. Now I'm debating whether to build it as a 9' 7pc or a 7'8" 6pc. Hmmm. Thanks Dan, Mark

Fellows, I have been inundated with questions and assertions regarding the Common Cents System definition that a rod deflected a distance equal to one third of its total length is fully loaded. (That's okay - I expected it, but it's really got things tied up here and I hate for anyone to think that I don't care enough about their question to answer it. I do, but can't get around to them all. S

I am about to build a cane rod and note that it has a prominent spine effect (infact more than one). Just curious whether the experienced builders out there take "spine" into account when building cane. Thanks in advance. Ed

Tom Kirkman, Can you say more about why you prefer a blank with a gentle bend in it. I have read where you have said this several times. I have been building rods for a lot of years and it has always been my preference to have a blank that is as straight as possible. It seems to me that an ideal blank would be perfectly straight and also have no spine so that where one places the guides is not

I have recently purchased a factory built Sage SP from a dealer here in Australia, I have discovered that the spine on the tip section is a 90 degrees to the butt section, on raising this with the dealer he assures that it dose not matter in carbon fibre blanks because they have no spine. Would appreciate any assistance from you guys, thanking you

Well, we´ve been asking about the spine location on these fine blanks and someone mentioned the white dots. As they said they are not the spine, I lately started to find it in the last models i had built ( from #4 to #9). Where do you casters and builders prefer the guides placed? The Weak side or the Opposite side? What would be the advantages in each case? Thanks!

it would be interesting to here of all the possible effects that can take place when the eyes are not lined up with the spine. example: I recieved a replacement redington 9' #5 RS2 (I sent them a broken origional Red Start 5/6 weight (different rod)) and upon inspection found that while looking down the top half of the blank under load, the eyes seem to be in the 5 o'clock position

I'm finally getting around to wrapping guides on a SCiv 6 (4 piece) weight. My static distr. test looks good and a few test cast went okay. I wan't that impressed with the casts though, but don't know if it just me getting used to a faster action rod than the sciii 5 weight I'm building too (was hitting the 50 foot mark with ease but not much more). I got a great deal on a 4-pc/5-wt fly rod blem which appears perfect except for a substantial kink about 2" from the tip. Unfortunately, the bend is not in the same direction as the spine (nor 180-degrees from it). Otherwise, the rod is pretty darn straight. Should I: (a) ignore it and build the rod normally, aligning the guides to the spine? (b) place the guides in line with the bend,

Help, I would like to know how to locate the spine on a three piece blank. I have no problem locating the spine on a one piece and two piece blank using the flex method. Is the proper procedure to assemble all three sections and flex the blank trial and error method untill there is a consistent bend? Second question, The blank I have has an open hole in the end of the male section of the blank

I think I have read something about this matter but will still insist. If you´ve seen SAGE blanks, they are marked with white dots to indicate the "straightest visual line". I wonder now what that is, is it the spine? I made the test to find the spine on three different models of these fine blanks. Usually I found the "weak side" opposite or almost opposite to the white dotÂ

I have a 3 piece blank, when I spine each section and align the spines of each section and then spine the blank as a whole, there is an obvious bend in the tip of the blank when I sight down it. I found that I could ignore the spine on individual sections and adjust it to get the spine of the complete blank to be on the Straightest axis. So my question, how import is it for the spines of the
