In order to preclude a firestorm of topics that have been beat to death, I want to preface my question with a couple of statements. I am not, in any way, refering to castability (distance or accuracy). I also realize that the rods pitch and yaw axes are controlled by the angler and the roll axis is controlled also by the angler wit;h definate input from guide (torque arm/ lever arm) configuration

Can someone please explain to me the meaning of "straightest axis"? I am new to rod building and have built a total of five rods. Four have been on Rainshadow Blanks and one on a Lamiglas Blank. From my untrained eye, all have been extremely straight, no dips, bumps etc. I simply put the guides on in line with the center of the reel seat. Is this o.k.? I don't want to inflame the disc

Hi All, I recently purchased a Sage 890-4 blank. It came with white dots on each end of each section, which I assume should lined up when joining the sections. I don't believe that these dots have anything to do with the spine of the rod, rather the relative position of each section to its adjacent section. My question to all of you is, can I assume that if I put the rod together wi

I followed the advise on the previous post I did about finding the spine on the butt half of a 2 piece rod and it worked great. Thanks for the suggestions. After locating the spines on the individual halfs I put the 2 together and aligned the marks I had made to see what the result of a spine on a 2 piece rod would be. Surpirse, surpirse. I have a rod with 2 spines 180 apart from each o

Periodically people post questions about the spine on a blank. Often the responses are varied and I believe the person asking the questions does not walk away with a general understanding of spines or their effects. I have put together a short overview about spines and how they are perceived by a long distance shore fisherman and tournament caster. Hopefully it will be helpful. The overview i

Hi all, i made a mistake yesterday, i was glueing up grips and reelseat on a spin rod, i splined the rod, then without thinking i glued the reelseat inline with the spline like u would a overhead reel, any opinons on what i should do now would be greatly appreciated, should i cut off front grip and reelseat and start again, or will the rod still be fine the way it is, i would like the rod to perf

Seems like a wrapping jig is also a spine finder. Was trying to fix some threads and my darned blank kept rolling on me. Took a bit for me to realize it kept rolling to the same spot. Tried a support at each end of several more blanks, and they sure seem to orient to the 'spine'. A few did it all by themselves,,, no hands required. Then others I just pressed the center with a smooth plastic burni

Recently while making some measurements of sensitivity something occurred to me that I have not seen discussed before that should add some food for thought to the spine and how the guides should be positioned relative to the spine of a blank. The sensitivity of a rod is a function of the rods stiffness. If all other things are equal the sensitivity will increase or decrease directly with the in

I have noticed on some videos and books that some check for the spine after they put the grip on and some do it first . Is it kinda like somethings its just a matter of prefernce. I just got all my equipment in today and will start on my first rod soon. Thanks for any and all comments. This forum has been really helpful. Thanks again Brent

During the years when I started following this forum, rods were built with consideration to the spine, this changed to the straightest axis, and eventually it really didn't matter. Before I started rod building I played with building my own golf clubs. Lately in the golf circles, attention has been given to orienting the spine a certain way in golf clubs. If a golf shaft exibited a single spine,

Maybe I'm just not typing the right thing, but I couldn't find anything on this. So, sorry if it's redundant. I'm building a telescoping flippin stick. It's a Rainshadow FS905T blank, so it's pretty heavy. I know that normally on a casting set up you put the spline on top for better casting and more power on the hookset. I'm thinking as I build this one that I'd like the spline on the bottom t

I will start off by saying that I am far from computer savy. I have tried to search for topics that might help me so that I could avoid posting a message like this and look like an idiot and frustrate others. But, the volume of information is difficult for me to wade through and I am not sure that I am using the feature and/or the key words correctly. Last year I decided to get into rod buil

I have a couple question. When I spine my blank for a casting rod the traditional way is for the guides to be on top of the blank, now i'm going to spiral the guides to the bottom of the blank isn't that going to make my casting rod less stiff and more like a spinning rod, Maybe i'm missing something. My other question is Do I need some sort of tool to get the degree when I place my guides for th

I build my rods using belly down alignment - not a spine tradition follower. I am building a heavy weight fly rod and am only concerned about excessive blank loading to the point of failure. The following two pieces of advice had been sent by Stephen Pratt and Tom Kirkman. Stephen Pratt: Place the thicker part of the wall section on the inside of the curve. The more material you have on

Hello All - Just received my first fly rod building kit - Sage VT-2 4wt 4pc blank with all the "stuff" to build it, guides, reel seat, grip, etc. I've been reviewing this site (which is GREAT by the way) and have read a ton of stuff regarding spining (or not) and some other interesting topics. So naturally I've got a few questions before I actually dive in ... 1. From what I rea

Sorry if this is the topic that will never die, but I would like to hear some opinions on a small issue I have with a rod I'm building now. I've read quite a bit on the topic of splining and have always done it, but at just over a dozen fly rods under my belt (I build for myself), I'm still a novice. One of the rods I'm currently building is a multi-piece travel rod from a respected blank man

Put the evp on then splined the rod. Put the reel seat on last night and re splined it again and it is about 1/8 or so of the main line. With the calstar 800h blank, is this going to cause a torq problem when the rod is loaded? I know there is not much I can do but not let it happen ever again.

Im trying to locate the spine on the butt of a 10 wt. 4 piece. In the past Ive only built light rods and havent had any problems rolling them by hand. Ive seen the spline finders but was wondering if I could work with what I have. Heres my question, If I put the section in my dryer rollers on the very ends and then push down in the center of the section does this not locate the spline down. I pl

I am going to build my first multi piece spin pack rod.. I've found a Rainshadow 4 piece 6', 4-8lb. I assume you spline each section, and do the static line test like all other builds. I am looking for guide size / type recommendations and should I wrap each female section of the ferules? Any other advice would be appreciated as I can't seem to find much info on the subject. Thanks

Hey, all Just a quick introduction. I've been a lurker here for quite some time and decided to finally chime in. I've been a fly fisher since I was a kid and finally felt the urge to take my passion to the next level in custom rod building. As my skill has improved over the past 25 years of ff-ing, I've always felt that the perfect rod for my fishing style and philosophy were eluding me

I'm about to try building my first fly rod. On the spinning rods I build, I place the guides on the inside of the curved blank (the spine is on the outside of the curve if I am correct). Are the guides inside or outside of the curve on a typical fly rod? Assuming a 4 piece rod, do you worry about the spine in all four sections or just in the top one or two? Thanks, Skip Kerwin

On my light weight fly rods awhile back I put the guides on the same side as the effective spine (underneath) and liked the way they cast. And on my recent spinning rods for Steelhead and Salmon, I put the guides opposite effective spine (on top) and I liked that way as well. I'm not sure why but I really like the feel with the effective spine on top of the rod in the fishing position. I pic

Hi Guys, A worrying comment I received from Sage, because we just received some Z-Axis Sage rods (4 piece), and I needed to knwo about the guide placement marks. I asked them if they also placed these marks on the spine, or opposite it. They said no! They don't spine any of their factory rods any more. Why is this? And is it not better to find the spines and place the guides accordingly? An

I am building my first 11'6" float rod. I have read that finding the spine is very, very important. I have talked to a few local builders and they say on a float rod of that length, finding the spine is not that important.I want to build this stick the proper way and learn the proper way.Any help is always appreciated and wanted.

Just a quick enquiry. What are you views on spining rods, especially matching the spine on multi section blanks, and the easiest way to do the job. The method that I employ is to rest the butt of the blank / section on a sheet of glass, support the tip and apply pressure to the middle. I have always said that spining is a necessity, but having read some recent threads I'm not so sure.
