3631. cork repair
I have a full wells grip with a chip out of the front shoulder of the grip, pretty much under where the thumb goes. The front of the grip is not rounded off - it takes a ninety degree bend to the blank. I was thinking of producing some fine cork dust, mixing it with Rod Bond, and shaping it to fill the hole left by the missing chip. I would appreciate any suggestions or cautions on how to accompl

The kevlar I have tied with was waxed. You may wish to strip the wax, or at least test for wax on the kevlar you use.

3633. dying epoxy?
Is there away to dye say Flex Coat epoxy a black or dark gray, without seriously compromising the effectiveness of the epoxy finish?

3635. metallic thread
Is there a significant loss of strength going from standard NCP size D thread to size D metallic thread? If so, what is the magnitude of this difference, closer to 10% or 50%? I mistrust spring scales in low weights or I would try to measure for myself.

3636. Re: Guide Size?
What type of size #8 do you refer to? There are two possible "size #8's" involved here - the internal diameter of the tip-top guide ring in millimeters, or the outside diameter of the tip-top tube which fits over the small end of the blank, measured in 64ths of an inch. I know it's confusing and perhaps nonsensical, but don't blame me.

No response from Purglas. I guess I wrap.

3638. Re: RX8+ vs SCV
Another devil's advocate. Many of the differences between rod "weight" and line "weight" being discussed here are trivialized by variations in the dynamics between supposedly uniform rod blanks and variations in the flexibility, diameter and weight of supposedly uniform fly lines, to say nothing of variations in individual casting strokes, personal preferences, and angling nee

3639. ferrule wrap or not?
I'm building on an 11 1/2 foot 3-piece Purglas surf blank with spigot ferrules. The blank already has all male and female ferrules radially wrapped with a 3" wide piece of what appears to be linear fiberglass tape with an epoxy finish integral with the rest of the rod. Is it necessary to over wrap these ferrules with thread for any good reason other than aesthetics? I would rather save

3640. Re: RX8+ vs SCV
I know from experience that St. Croix has excellent customer service and response time. A king salmon once stole the tip of a St. Croix 3-piece fly rod (long story) and I couldn't get it back. I called St.Croix and although the rod was out of production for some time they hunted around in inventory and promptly mailed me a new tip section for a nominal fee. Customer service is an often overlooke

For the second year in a row the Mudhole open house was a success. Evidently even the weather respects the Mudhole. The selection of products and customer service are impressive.

I put rubber washers - actually rubber packings for an old-fashioned faucet - in my "drag washers" next to the spool. I think this allows me to apply more tension with less side pressure on the spool.

3643. Which end?
When winding a cork tape grip is it best to start from the thicker or the thinner end of the blank?

3644. All-time record blunder?
I've heard some impressive rod building blunders, but I think I may have topped them all. I had cannibalized a broken fly rod, including a very nice REC reelseat and full wells grip with an extendable threaded fighting butt. I
boiled them off the broken rodand salvaged both. I was building on a 4 section St. Croix SCV 9wt.and I decided belatedly one evening to get a start on the new rod. The in

3646. Re: Carbide Reamer Grit
I have had good luck with a 22" belt sander belt in #40 grit - about $1.50. I make a long spiral cut about 1/2" wide around and around the belt. I take the butt section of a broken rod - everybody's got more of them than they would like - and apply contact cement to the butt section and to the cloth back of the sandpaper strip. I apply the sandpaper strip to the butt in a spiral, le

3647. rod shipping
I just finished building a spin rod - pink! - for my grand daughter. I wish to ship it to her. It' s a one piece rod six feet long and requires a 2 1/2" tube. The only PVC tubing I have found at Lowes or Home Depot is thick walled and very heavy indeed - definite overkill. What suggestions do you have for reasonably light yet reasonably durable tubing for shipping this rod?

3648. RE: Help Wanted
Thanks for the help. Yeah, it'll be a surf rod - I can occasionally see king mackrel free jumping out my bedroom window. Are there any changes to standard procedure when building on such a large blank? Are double wraps necessary? I assume size "D" thread is indicated. Have you any tips for selecting a reel seat?
I have a vintage ST. Croix "Ben Doerr " 10foot spinstick which

3649. help wanted
I got such a deal on a Purglas closeout blank I couldn't resist. Now I've got a 11'6" three piece monster with a #9 tip and a 1.14" butt. I've built many fly rods and a few spin rods but I have no idea about a guideset or spacing, or a reel seat on this beast . I'd like to build a spinrod. Any component or spacing suggestions?
