ferrule wrap or not?

I'm building on an 11 1/2 foot 3-piece Purglas surf blank with spigot ferrules. The blank already has all male and female ferrules radially wrapped with a 3" wide piece of what appears to be linear fiberglass tape with an epoxy finish integral with the rest of the rod. Is it necessary to over wrap these ferrules with thread for any good reason other than aesthetics? I would rather save the time, thread, and weight.

When in doubt, contact the manufacturer and ask.

If you're talkin about the rod's OD being thicker on the female ferrule than the rest of the blank, then it's probably been reinforced in that area. If it just looks like there's a different material used on the ferrules, then probably not. But in any case follow Tom's advice.

I've wondered for the past year or so whether ferrule wraps are really necessary. One would think, in this modern, high-tech age, that blanks could be manufactured such that ferrule wraps are not necessary, especially on lighter sticks, like fly blanks.

I understand that if you ask a manufacturer, most of the time they'll tell you to wrap the ferrules. After all, it won't hurt. But I'm still a bit skeptical that ferrule wraps are really needed, even though when decision time comes, I end up taking the safe route and wrapping the ferrules.

No response from Purglas. I guess I wrap.

When well fit and tight, I'd think wrapping is superfluous. But any looseness and the male piece will act just like a lever or prybar in there. So I'd think at a minimum you'd want to reinforce those female areas near the mouth and around where the male ends
