A past thread ( [www.rodbuilding.org] ) suggested not using Kevlar for wrapping threads and gave quite a few reasons for the difficulty in using it. Nonetheless; I'm planning to build a travel bass rod themed after my old army unit and I want to try using Kevlar for the wraps. If nothing else it'll be a learning experience :)
Anybody try using it recently and have suggestions, recommendations, thoughts? Jim Hicks Re: Wrapping with Kevlar Thread

Jim, in my opinion, forget the theatrics and use good thread. I know it sounds cool and may have some memories, but Kevlar isn't the best stuff to use. Do you want to make a good rod or a conversation piece?
If you must use Kevlar, incorporate it into inlays, tag ends, the butt wrap or between a split grip. Just a thought. If you want an effective rod, it will work just fine. But if you want a rod that looks as good as it fishes... there's better stuff. Re: Wrapping with Kevlar Thread

Thanks, I'll do that. I'll play around with some ideas on the butt wrap for the kevlar and stick to regular nylon for the guides. Re: Wrapping with Kevlar Thread

The kevlar I have tied with was waxed. You may wish to strip the wax, or at least test for wax on the kevlar you use. Re: Wrapping with Kevlar Thread

Shimano sell a rod in Australia called the T-Curve, the butterfly jigging model of this rod has the guides wrapped using carbon fibre thread. Theatrics or not, it looks freakin cool!!!! Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
