rod shipping

I just finished building a spin rod - pink! - for my grand daughter. I wish to ship it to her. It' s a one piece rod six feet long and requires a 2 1/2" tube. The only PVC tubing I have found at Lowes or Home Depot is thick walled and very heavy indeed - definite overkill. What suggestions do you have for reasonably light yet reasonably durable tubing for shipping this rod?

Phil:

Are you sending the reel on the rod? If so, it is better to send them in two packages, then you can use the thin wall and save the green. If not try the card board tubes and pack the rod good and insure it .

Look on the aisle that has the black sewer or drain PVC piping. It is about 1/3 the weight of the white and is plenty strong to send a blank. I have never figured out why the two different pipes are not in the same store area. It even has light end caps instead of the heavy things for PVC piping.

Hey Phil,
We have had success shipping rods in triangle boxes, they are much sturdier than a rectangular box. PVC is great, but its hard to find sizes that will accept a size 25 or 30 single-foot guide. No matter which way you choose, do not be conservative with bubble wrap or packing material. The more the better, you really dont want the rod to move around inside the box. We have also used zip-ties to adhere it to one side of the box. Hope this Helps.

Foam core PVC or ABS (black) pipe are both about half the weight of schedule 40 PVC but have similar stiffness and should be fine for shipping a rod.
