Tom, I recall from an earlier post you metioned something about turning components in the upcoming issue of 11-5. I have had it with donig stuff by hand and am going to finally pull the trigger on a small lathe. Without giving away the details of what is in the issue what lathe would meet the criteria for these and all other rodbuilding projects? thanks, Tom Kaufmann GySgt USMC.

Hi guys, sorry I have been late in getting back to you all. Tom and Marty I think that I will give the sj6400 a shot and see what I can find for a super light popping model too. Duane and Jim, I completely agree about the 720 I did build one a while back for this purpose and found it just a smidge heavy for what I was wanting.. I will say that I LOVE it for 1/16 and 1/8 ounce stuff... makes an

Hi guys, Fortunately, I have had some time on my hands today. I was wondering what you all think of the idea to use a popping rod for tossing light (1/32 oz) beetlespins. I will be using 4-6lb braid on a Shimano 750 or 1500 for powerfishing for panfish, similar to how most people spinnerbait fish for bass just lighter stuff for the smaller fish. I was thinking of using my leftover p

UPdate, I put the cardinal on this morning spooled up with 2lb sensithin (just cause it is what I found first) and took it out to do some casting. I got almost another 25 feet with it!!!!!! UNBELIEVABLE!!!!! I was getting between 70- 75 feet with this little guy and on shorter casts it was a dead on tack driver!!!!! I am still trying to figure out how to get a pic put up but when I do ya'll s

Hi guys, Keep in mind that this is only 4'6" worth of rod and I was very gently casting it. I did try casting it against my factory rods and it outcast them on each toss. I tried all 8 of the different reels that I had in the house seeing if I could get the factor version to best my rod. I was whipping the factory stick as well!!! I am sure there is much more to be had simply by launching i

Evening gents. Well I finished up wrapping the UL I had previously asked about placement of the butt guide. I ended up with a BYAg 20 and worked my way to 3mm micro guides. Throwing a 1/16th ounce beetlespin around in the back yard and sidewalk, I averaged approximately 52 feet with it.... I will say that I am pleasently pleased with it... Oh yeah, I was using a TICA LF500. the reel I am going to

I would think you will have rings popping out in the very near future if you decide to reuse those guides.

thanks Ted and Tom. I will certainly try that the next time I get a wild hair to make a pack rod out of a small UL.. I built it as a test as I had a request to build a small pack rod for fishing the Sierra's while I lived out in Cali. I ended up going with a travel blank that I dropped sections from and it worked out quite well. thanks and I will definately file the placement of the ferrules i

Good evening gents, I have yet another question for you all. I have been looking at many of the factory ul's that I have here at the house and got to thinking... I know, I know it can lead to disasterous results at times... ie 2 piece 4'6" ul from a one piece blank equals BIG pop and broken rod!! LOL I noticed that most of the butt guides are placed at about 15" from the face of the r

Niel, Yes, I as a hand wrapper have experienced some of the exact problems described here. I still use many of thier colors as I don't do enough volume to justify replacing every spool that I have. I have however replaced my problem spools with Maderia or simply moved on from that specific color. I will be trying some of the Fish Hawk in the future. Tom Kaufmann GySgt USMC

William, You state that you have several St. Croix that are not sensitive enough for your liking. It may help us to know what models you have as St. Croix offers some extremely sensitive blanks in their current line up. Once we know what you are currently working with we will be able to offer up some educated suggestions for your application. I will concur with Steve as the RX8 blanks are very n

Steve, LOVED how it came out.. I am working on a new short skipping rod that I am going to be fishing on the local river in NC.... Making it out of a 5'6" SC3 blank that I am cutting 3 inches off of the butt..... I think that it is going to come out REALLY nice... will finally be able to retire my old t-2401-m- 5-3 that I believe I bought back in 1986!!!! I think that I will redo it and mak

Hi guys, Just wanted to let you all in on a couple of things that worked well for me in trying to secure the itty bitty "micro guides" I used some 1/16" tape that I got from a local craft/art store. I have also successfully used tape that I got from an auto supply store that was a 16th of an inch that was used for pinstriping.. Hope that you guys find it useful and have a GREAT

Thanks Bob, I will give Mr Lee a shout and see if I can come up with the guides. Unfortunately, I am not able to do any instruction on weapons where I currently am, I am hoping once I get back to the fleet I will be able to get on the ranges and do some more coaching. No, worries about being in the Navy, my wife is currently an ATC.... as you can imagine the Gunny versus Chief (both E7 for those

Hi Guys, sorry that I took so long in getting back to you all. Bob, I am currently stationed in Virginia Beach, Va (yeah I know it a hardship tour....LOL) I did peel off the wrap and the main was a light brown (I will check the claret for a closer match, thank you John) followed by red and then gold metallic all of which were coated with red glitter. I had to really dig deep but I may have foun

Good afternoon everyone, I need some help. I have a friend that would like me to repair a Bass Pro Bionic Blade and I need two things. The first is the guides are gold framed and appear to be Fuji aluminum oxides and the second thing I am having trouble with is what color is a good match for the main wrap? Thanks, I appreciate the help Tom Kaufmann GySgt USMC

Scott, I think that you need to send Jim Gamble a message, maybe he will chime in. I have just used mine for the first time and I REALLY liked it. I would tell you what he printed up but have managed to misplace mine too, so I will be glad to see it if Jim is able to do that. I will say that it is SUPER clear and VERY thin and cured nice and quick as well. Hope you are as happy with it as I a
