I had a couple of rods come in that were to be rebuilt. The customers liked the guides and they were fine so I recovered them. Since the blanks had been broken a couple of times, they would not be reused.
I have always used a heat gun to soften the epoxy and cut the thread with a razor knife and take off the guides. Since I was a bit strapped for time, I started up the propane torch - took a pair of pliars and held each guide. I heated the epoxy - nearly to the point of flames and removed the guides. The guides were nice and warm and pulled free with no residue glue or thread left on them. Rather than taking 10 minutes to remove the guides, it took about 5 seconds a guide. So, if you aren't going to reuse the blank, this is a very quick way to remove the guides from a rod blank. Take care Roger Re: Guide Removal !!

Not a very safe way to work. Don't get me wrong, I use a torch daily in my rodbuilding but not at a point to setting things on fire. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 04/22/2008 10:04AM by Lance Dupre. Re: Guide Removal !!

I would think you will have rings popping out in the very near future if you decide to reuse those guides. Re: Guide Removal !!

That is a lot of heat. What I do is use a cig lighter. I just warm the finish and it peals right off I get no finish left over. With that much heat you may weaken the frame. Also there cheaper guides that well pop out or melt. Some guides are held in plact witha instant glue
