I would like to know if any Rodmaker Magazines have covered custom fighting butts for fly rods. Additionally, I am also interested in creating reel seats, however less so due to the majority of the flyrods I make I would rather just have all aluminum seat....
Please let me know any info....I can see how I could take a few pieces of cork on a manrel and turn the cork then bore to fit around th

All-
I've noticed discoloration on non-burl traditional cork as a result of cork sanding when making my own handels on a lathe with mixed types...They almost look dirty...How do you keep the dust from running and smearing the cork...I have tried cleaning them, however it isn't 100%...I would appreciate any help or suggestions.
I sand with 60, 220, and 600...Mostly shape with Sandpaper.

They will replace the labels no problem just talk to customer service....My wife through out 3 loomis labels and they replaced...Im not a big fan of their labels they rub off in your hands so you need to be careful...I think debs waterslides are much easier to work with....

35. Thanks Everyone
Thanks everyone for you help with my feather inlays......
MY second inlay went down easy, very smooth. I used Terry's how-to that was passed along as well as some of the other tips and tricks given a few months back e.g. soaking feather.
This time was so easy, compared to the first....

Best dvd I ever saw was Doc Ski's one where he builds an offshore rod. I think he shows so much that can be applied in so many other rods. I think Tom made a good point.

One more thing a 6'6" is the best size to go with...I would think you build rain shadow and the sj783 they have would be good for the bigger plugs, but a 782 for smaller plugs e.g. superspook juniors.

I searched the forum, however I couldn't locate any information to this particular question. When building a steelhead rod for fly fishing are the same blanks used that are used when building a spinning steelhead rods....
If anyone has additional information on building steelhead rods I would appreciate it. My brother up north wants one.
Thanks in advance!

Terry I used a pdf that you made to guide me along....I went with the permagloss (man is that stuff sticky)...I got it to stay...These are all good suggestions. I let it set and just coated with ls supreme. That stuff is real thin....Could hardly believe it clear too....

I am working on finishing a rod for my brother. Just got the feather inlay lefy.
Anyhow, working off a pdf of Terry's. The other night I practiced with feathers and didn't have a lot of luck.....this time I used permagloss....It worked much better but the sides of the feather would just not stay down. Any ideas here on what to do. I was trying to get the sides of the feather to wrap around

I am working on my first fly rod for my brother in ny...I am not an avid flyfisherman...I got a nice handcrafted handlemade thanks to a recent issue of RM that detailed this quite nicely. The reel seat is on there too....Only problem is these wire guides I cant seem to figure out if there is an upside down or rightside up. Does it matter? Is there a front and a back to them? Thanks,

My first rod was a simple spiral.....I built 4-5 others....just align it like a baitcaster and rotate all the guides after the first guide 180 degrees or to the bottom. Next half way between the first and second guide place a guide to roll you over to the bottom, this is at 90 degrees. That should do it!

I have really grown to dislike these more and more. One in salt water they break easy, and two they tend to get the line caught in baitcasters depending on if they are placed on top or bottom if there is slack in the line....I don't know....the simpilar ones I think will be what I am using in the future....the simple u shape seems to provide adequate function without imparment!

I am a newbie to Rodbuilding since January. My big thing I am curious about what is the average number of rods people make in 1 year. I heard Tom say 2 a year??? I have completed 7 since January and have 2 more that are WIP. I am sure pro's like Cliff Hall are just turning them out left and right....What is the average for a hobbiest vs pro or professional builder?
