Hello all
I'm getting ready to build my first spiral wrapped rod and I have a few questions about guide selection. I fully understand the spiral concept and how to set it up but I need help with guide selection, specifically the bumper guide. Now I understand this bumper guide needs to be a low frame small ring guide. The problem is that I cannot find any specs such as ring height or frame height from any of the manufactures. Also, some sponsers list a "Bridge" guide, is this guide made for the purpose of using in spiral wrapped guides or something else? Here's my rod set up: St. Croix 3S60MLF AmTak HZHV 16,12 HZHS 6,6,6,6 or HZHV 12,10 HZHS 6,6,6,6 Fuji UNSG 7J for the Bumper Guide? Will this work or is there a better guide set up? Thanks. Any casting style guide, such as NSG/NLG or similar, is fine for the bumper guide. I'd use an 8. They work fine.
The bridge guides are made for something else, although I'm not sure what. Nobody makes special guides for spiral wraps nor do they require anything special. .......... Re: Simple Spiral Questions

Personally, I would go with HZHV12, 8 and GZHF 6 Fly guides and use a GZHF for 8 for the bumper guide. You will probably get more opinions

Use a double foot small ring low profile guide for the bumper. For that length rod the 12 would probably be a better choice. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/01/2006 12:16PM by Bill Stevens. Re: Simple Spiral Questions

I've built a few inshore saltwater rods using this method 6-7 using 781-3 or 841-3... I did as follow 12dbl, the bumper guide 8dbl (you could probley use an 8 sigle foot, but never tried it). Then for the underneath I use single foot fly guides. Depending on the blank 8 or a 7, the 1 or 2 more 7's depending if I started with 8 or 7, then the rest 6. Don't really see why you would want to use regular casting guides on the bottom. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/01/2006 10:28PM by Jeffrey Wolfanger. Re: Simple Spiral Questions

If getting the frame length and height is important, you should ask for a new Batson Enterprises Blank and Component catalog. Lots of very good info on their products in there. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
