121. Interesting Story
I have been away on business, a lot lately. However, I managed to get a few days of fishing in between this weekend and last weekend.
Yesteday, I was wading in Galveston, Texas for the flounder run....It was very cold, and I was talking to a fella when he got hung up. The interesting thing was he started horsing this rod and moved one of his hands up 1/2 up the rod while continuing to horse

Anyone have any input on that is it possible the thread is bad, it is seperating way to often.

I am having some problems with trim tabs. This is my first rod....No problems with wrapping just triming....The thread I am using is shinny metalic like thread guidbrod is the company that makes it. It isn't nylon, my main wraps are nylon A.
Anyhow, when I go to cut it it splits into two pieces, and sort of unravels. If it doesn't do it then, it might come unraveled latter, when I am wrap

127. Re: Rod wrappers.
I had a huge thread on here about the 1st wrapper I was going to buy, and should I or shouldn't I get electric. I spent $54.00 and got a hand wrapper, and I see no way in why at this time I should have anything better. I went over to a rodbuilders house, (Ellis M.) and tried his. I am just not ready for it. I am very glad that I bought just a hand wrapper...maybe my opinion will change in 6 m

Thanks, that is what I am doing. judging from the post I looked at this is great setup for casting, if not best .....
I guess now, I just need to know about descrepancy in first guide placement and # of guides, I don't want to overload it.. Not sure if I misunderstood my friend in 24" rather that 14" as Dale's book claims on pg197. I appreciate your assistance....

For those of you who don't know me I am very green to rod building.
I am working on a spiral rod, it is a 6'6" medium action blank rainshadow. The first guide I am using is a 12 dbl at 0 degrees 24" up the rod from middle of reel seat. The next guide I am using is at 90 degrees and is an 8dbl, the next is at 180 8 single, then 4 7 singles, and 2 6 singles all of these are at 180

Yeah, those look cool. Today, I configured my guide placement and wrapped a guide with the gold and maroon it looked great! I reconfigured my profile as you stated. Thanks again! I will have to learn about flocking, I am unfamilar with it at this time.

I am looking for a workbench magnifier with a lamp on a movable arm that I can use on my building bench. Anyone have any good ideas of places on lines or in stores. More importantly, do you know any good brand make and model out there. I appreciate the help as always. Thanks a lot.

Hello-
I finally got some work done, I was in here a month or so back asking about tools, and advise. Bill Stevens recommended that I find a local rod builder in Houston which was excellent advice. I met Ellis M. and he has been pointing me in the right direction.
I ended up taking advantage of the Rainshadow sale with Custom Tackle, and bought (4) ISJ 843 OG, and some other materials a

I started looking into rod building about a month ago or so ago, I got a little hung up on tools....:)
What I think is important is that you order some books, Tom Kirkmans and Dale Clemens books are great. However, I think you'll need a video. I got the flexcoat rod building video.,,,
Another useful thing, probley *most* useful is find a rod builder in your area. I found someone and he i

136. First Trout Rod
I would like to build a bait casting/casting rod 6'6" that I can enjoy for catching Spekled trout. I would like it to be fast ,and medium to medium light action. I am looking to spend around $150 on components. I need the following:
Blank
Reel Seat
Guides
Corkhandle small
I would like it to be as light as possible. Anyone have any good ideas or suggestions for parts? I would

I want to be able to make saltwater bay rods, offshore kingfish and snapper rods.
I am thinking of getting a flexcoat hand wrapper
Is this a decent choice, also what dryer should I get? Can I get a lathe later and just by premade cork handles for now.
What dryer can I buy....
If I bought an electric wrapper, can any be used as a wrapper, dryer, lathe, finisher? Just curious seems li

I just bought your book...Anyhow, I see how nice it is for cork sanding and also to put the masking tape on the blank for the real seat. I saw these two techniques in the flex coat video and figured that it would just make life easier. Are people still using masking tape as a spacer or filler between blank and reel seat. I found this odd...What do you pros do?
Thanks,

I mispoke, and I applogise for that. When I said electric weaver I met electric wrapper. The electric wrappers look to make life easier. OK...sorry about that. Anyhow I was looking here:
I just want the best bang for my buck. If it is the $399.00 OEM Flex Coat so be it, I just don't want to by something for $200.00 to only want to ditch it 6 months from now. I appreciate everyones feed

I am very new to Rod building, I am assembling together tools that I need to get started. I just bought a great workbench today, roughly 6 feet long. Hope that is long enough 30 inches wide.
I two more major things:
1. Electric Dryer
2. Electric Weaver
Now, I watched Flex Coat video on rodbuilding, and it seems like the elecric weaver just makes things so much easier, is that true. I
