Hello Again, Hopefully this will work better than my last post.
Im trying to find out what components I will need to install a skeleton reel seat and texalium grip on my spinning rod. The rod Im installing it on is .4125 in diamater. I need to know what all I need to order to get the job complete. I am pretty sure I can figure it out once I have the parts. I have some books coming at the end of this week but Im hoping to have the parts I need by then. Any help or recommendations would be geatly appreciated. Thank you, Grant King Re: Fitting a reel seat and other components. Newbie Questions!!

Grant.Being as this is a newby question I would not use 5 min epoxy.Use a slower set so you have time to make adjustments. You will most likely not get it perfect within the time 5 min alots.Seems like a long time but trust me it is not.Use preferably RodBond or one of the other rod building epoxies. Rod Bond!!!! I don't think that Texilium is made in a small enough diameter to be used in a reel seat. A reel seat insert has to be turned to fit the reel seat you are using and has to be turned even smaller on the ends to fit into the skeleton piesces. Mike (Southgate, MI) If I don't want to, I don't have to and nobody can make me (except my wife) cuz I'm RETIRED!! Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 06/26/2006 11:24PM by Mike Barkley. Thanks, but I dont have a problem with epoxies. I am looking for a list of componants that I will need to install a reel seat and the Texalium grips.
I think I know most of it, Im just trying to figure out if there are some speacial rings or winding checks? How are they attached? Epoxy too? Thanks, Grant Re: Fitting a reel seat and other components. Newbie Questions!!

To do this you will need: Skeleton Seat Seat Insert or turn down something to use as a set Graphite or Brick Foam arbors Winding Check if you want Slow Cure epoxy Tapered reamers or Round File Scotch Brite Pad or 400+ Sandpaper Denatured Alcohol If you get these components, when you receive your books you will have everything you need. Just make sure to measure the blank twice before ordering components (especially winding check if using a metal one). There is a lot more I could say but reel seat installation should be covered quite well in any book you read on rod building. John Re: Fitting a reel seat and other components. Newbie Questions!!

John, I have read on the web that people are using drywall mesh under the seat. Do you believe this is something I could use? What are graphite or brick arbors used for? As far as I can tell the only thing to building a grip is to make sure it gets snug to the blank and holds epoxy and you have got yourself a grip!
I think through my hours of reading, lol, I can build a handle. My final question is regarding a split grip. What I would like to do is add a small section of rod into the butt area so I can make it longer. I repair golf clubs as a hobby and I have a good understanding of graphite and working with it, but the opening in the end of my rod is quite small and I am not sure a small extension would be as stiff as I would need it to be. Any recommendations as to how this can be done on such a small inner diameter rod? Where can a small extension be found? Thank you, Grant King P.S. Heres a link to show what I am trying to do with the extension. [www.georgescustomrods.com] Re: Fitting a reel seat and other components. Newbie Questions!!

Yes, you can use drywall tape BUT I would not recommend it. The graphite arbors along with the brick foam arbors are used in the same fashion as the drywall tape and provide a more secure and sensative fit for adhering the reel seat to the blank. As far as extending the butt end of the rod I would recommend using an oversleve from a piece of scap blank or an old rod to extend your butt section. You can even use aluminum tubing of a SLIGHTY larger diameter to extend the butt. Also, read the article in the libray here on surface preparation. This will tell you how to get the best adhesion between the various components. John Re: Fitting a reel seat and other components. Newbie Questions!!

I received my book about rod building but it wasnt that informative. It doesnt show anything regarding winding checks. What types can be used? Can anything be used as long as it fits over the blank and holds epoxy? Thanks, Grant Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
