I have 25 rods sitting ready to be built today for a customer. They are to be done to my customers specifications using components my customer picked out. Does that make them custom? My customer just happens to be Lamiglas and these custom rods will be available in stores all over the country.

After twenty plus years of building rods I have stopped making stupid mistakes. Now all the mistakes I make are smart mistakes. To the casual observer it's hard to tell the difference between smart and stupid mistakes but it makes me feel better to think that I made the mistake because I was smart enough to make the mistake.

Andy I just had the same problem with a bamboo rod I redid for a customer. The advice I was given was to bounce the female end of the ferrule on the floor a couple of times to mushroom the ferrule. It worked like a charm. Bounce the ferrule off the floor and check it to make sure it doesn't mushroom out too much. If that doesn't work you may have to replace the ferrule. Thomas F. Thornhill

Thanks, the reel seat and ferrules appear to be the same as some of the Montague rods and it could very well be a Montague.

Got a bamboo fly rod from a customer to redo and want to know if anyone knows anything about it. It is a 9'6" three piece rod with metal reel seat. It is maybe a three or four weight. The rod has been stripped and the only mark on it is engraved on the reel seat that says Radio and under that trade mark and under that it says Reg. U.S. Pat. Off. Any information on it would be nice so that

If I remember correctly the old metallic in size A had about 1/3 the strength as the size A nylon.

Mark I used to outwrap for Loomis and my landlord currently outwraps for them. Loomis uses size B Gudebrod thread on their wraps. What model rods and what color wraps were you looking at that you thought it wasn't thread?

Loomis doesn't use decals on their factory rods. The logos are silk screened on the rods. Thomas F. Thornhill

Doc I had a bunch of the SP-8300 spools. They work fine until you load them up about 20 times then they tend to deform and break, because of the pressure of the thread. I don't have any of them left, they all broke, but I took one to the machinist to have my aluminum spools made. I also used to have a bunch of the old Gudebrod spools they all deformed and broke too. For somebody that doesn't w

Italo I get thread in four ounce spools and load it on to smaller spools. The wood spools work for a while then the pressure of the thread will deform them and eventually break. I had a machinist make some spools out of aluminum. When I used wood spools I found it hard to find good ones and it was hard to find the size spools I wanted. The aluminum spools have worked great now for about ten y

Jerry Outwrappers just wrap the rods and line up the guides. The finish is applied by the factory. When I do custom rods I have a friend that puts the finish on, I,m not set up to finish the rods at home. Mike I live in Washington state within 20 miles of Loomis, Lamiglas, Talon and Burkheimer factories and a couple of small companies that build rods for various companies.. I have seen

Bob I estimate that I've wrapped about 75,000 rods over the years and about 15,000 of them had decorative wraps. So I figure that at any given moment someone is fishing with a rod I've wrapped. I've wrapped rods for so many different companies that I can't even remember them all. At one time I wrapped a bunch of rods that went to Japan, now I'm wrapping some rods that are going to Europe. So m

Jerry I outwrap for a living, It is piece work. The faster I wrap the more money I make. I use a power wrapper that I built myself. I wrap everything under power. When you get used to using a power wrapper even the smallest guides can be wrapped faster then by hand. I'm on a break right now, just finished wrapping 10 Lamiglas rods and have 15 more to do today. If I tried doing it manually my

Will I am not in the position to spend close to ten thousand dollars on 50 rods that I would end up sitting on for many years. I am not a retail outlet, I just outwrap rods at home. Also Lamiglas needs the rods to be finished by this Friday. They wouldn't have the time to make fifty more blanks send them out to get wrapped and finish them by Friday. Thomas F. Thornhill

Steve The set with eleven guides was 25 XC704X, seven foot casting rods, with two double foot guides and nine single foot guides. This set took me about seven hours to do. The other set was 25 LGM70MH, seven foot casting rods with seven double foot guides. This set took about six hours to do. Both sets had the same amount of tie offs. When I get back from Lamiglas I'll be working on the Burk

Bill No negotiations, I messed up and had to fix it or not get paid for my work. I had two sets of rod and I reversed the colors. They supply the thread. The rods got done this weekend and they go back to Lamiglas in about and hour. Bob Yes very little realignment, but they do get moved a bit when you transport them back and forth and not all of the guides were double foot. One set ha

I got a call from Lamiglas Friday after I returned my rods. It turned out that I had wrapped all my rods with the wrong color thread. This weekend I got to re-wrap 50 rods for free. When an outwrapper blunders it can be a lot of extra work. Sometimes you can read and understand the instructions and it still doesn't stop you from screwing up.

When I grind guide feet I use a belt sander and just hold the guides in my hand. I outwrap for a living and most of the time I'm grinding guides for 25 to 40 rods. Putting screws on the guides and taking them off may help but outwrapping is piece work I just don't have the time to do that. I usually grind guides and wrap 25 to 40 rods a day and a few seconds here and there to put the screws on

I used to wrap rods for a company called Tifa, a high end Japanese company, they have changed names since I wrapped for them. The blanks were made for them by Loomis, they were not available to the general public. The guides were Fuji gold cermet, and the reel seats were made for them by Fuji, also not available to the general public. They used butt caps with removable weights so you could adjus

Al Loomis Sage and the others mentioned are all fine blanks. One option that hasn't been mentioned is Burkheimer. I have one of his 6 wt. rods on my wrapper right now. Kerry not only makes spey rods but he builds fine trout blanks too. They are available in gray, blue and green . I outwrap for Kerry, so I may be a little biased but I also wrap for several other companies too, and I have seen h

Ronnie I use bobbins that I buy from Angler's Workshop that are made to fit the standard spools that Gudebrode uses, they are made by Griffen I think.. I like using the bobbins but most people that wrap as many rods as I do just put the 4 ounce spool on the floor and run the tread through their fingers for tension. The reasons I like using a bobbin are no line twist because the tension is on

Tim I use bobbins to do the entire rod. I wrap for a living and do around 100 to 150 rods per week. The arms of the bobbin apply enough tension and are adjustable by bending. Bobbins usually last me about four or five years then an arm breaks from being bent back and forth to change the tension . Thomas F. Thornhill

Bob I use a bobbin to hold my spool and adjust the tension by bending the arms of the bobbin. Most of the thread we get as outwrappers is on four ounce spools. Most outwrapper I know set the spool on the ground and run the tread through their fingers for tension. I download thread from the four ounce spools onto smaller spools. Thomas F. Thornhill

Ricardo I outwrap for a living and I use the same tension for everything. from ultralites to saltwater rods. I've wrapped thousands of rods and haven't had a problem yet. Thomas F. Thornhill

Chuck I don't think water in the blank will cause you trouble, but water isn't the only thing that can get into the rod. A small rock or even a stick could cause you a world of trouble if it gets into the blank. You could end up with a broken rod for a very small difference in weight. Thomas F. Thornhill
