Aftco used to make an ultra-light roller guide that had a nylon or composite frame. I don't know if they still make them or if they were experimental but I've never seen them in a catalog and haven't seen any in about five years.

Thomas,
It's the mass produced works by guys like you that got me into rodbuilding in the first place - so that I can take my time and do it right!
Torin
Thank you for the compliment. When you see the high quality work someone like me can produce in a short time it's inspiring. Keep up the wrapping and maybe someday you will get a little quicker. When you have wrapped as many rods as

I have wrapped several sets of the Universal guides. I may be a little biased, I know Mike McCoy and have been seeing these guides all through his design and tooling to make them. They need no filing and the feet are equal in length and in line with each other. As guides get larger the radius of the concave bottom gets larger making the guides sized for the area of the blank they will go

I used to outwrap for Sage and if they haven't changed colors they were;
Main wrap Gudebrode #340 gold size A.
Trim wraps Gudebrode #001black, # 9000 gold and #257 rust in size A.

Sounds to me like you're looking at some agatine guides. Brass frames and man made agate rings.

I just changed my post. To show that 0441 and 9441 are the same color. 9441 is not metallic.

In August I wrapped around a hundred spinning rods for a special project Gary Loomis was doing with his new blanks. I think that when people start getting their hands on his new blanks they will be pleased. The actions are reminiscent of his original blanks, that we all loved, built with newer lighter materials.

When rod companies are pushing product out as fast as they can an occasional bad one gets through. I have been outwrapping for about twenty years and have done thousands of rods per year. Over the years I have had blanks break while wrapping guides on and even while taping guides on, it just happens. I've had maybe twenty five rods break out of over a hundred thousand . It is more common t

This might help a little. I think I got this on this site.
Balancing a Fly Rod
In 1889 R. C. Leonard, a tournament caster, stepped to the platform without a reel on his rod and simply coiled the line at his feet. With that abbreviated rig he proceeded to smash all existing distance records, including his own, by a wide margin. It was a shocking thing to competitors and spectators alike. It w

A trick that us outwrappers use is to take a black sharpie and mark right over the black thread and color the gold thread in the gap. It only works with black thread and once the finish is on it's hard to see. I would never use this on rods for myself but when you are wrapping 25 or more rods a day it's faster then taking the guide off grinding it and rewrapping.

Yes my landlord still outwraps for Loomis. Outwrapping is not bid on by outwrapppers, you just wrap for the price they offer or they find someone who will. Outwrapping pays by the piece so the faster you wrap the more money you make per hour. Now as to how many rods I can wrap in a day, on my best day I wrapped 120 ultra-lite spinning rods for Loomis in 10 hours. I have never wrapped t

I outwrapped for Sage for a short time last year and just checked my Sage paperwork. On the TCX rods they used Gudebrod #209 size A for the main wraps and Gudebrod #206 and #209 in size A for the trim wraps.

I used to outwrap for Loomis. The red they used was Gudebrod #326 in size B or if it is darker red it would be Gudebrod #206 in size B. I can't remember offhand which they used on that model.

I outwrap for a living and about a year ago I did a bunch of Falcon rods. The ones I wrapped used Rainshadow blanks. I don't know if this was something special they were trying or if this is how they normally do it. I've wrapped a lot of rods for different companies and a lot of them use blanks made by other manufacturers. .

I am sorry that I posted the wrong color, I transposed letters. The main wrap color is 290 tan and the trim wrap color is 5274 chestnut. I read the numbers wrong on the Sage paperwork I have.

Alex
When I first started doing decorative wraps it took me forever to do a simple chevron now it takes about fifteen minutes. If I charged by the hour my wraps would have gone from extremely expensive and low quality to low cost and high quality. Early on I decided that the only fair way would be to charge by the inch and the complexity. I start out at $8.00 and inch for simple chevrons and d

I only have six fly rods and I think I might build a few more for myself. This doesn't count the fly rods I build for others, today I wrapped thirty Sage rods and tomorrow I will wrap fifteen more. The low number of personal fly rods is due to the fact that I don't fly fish.

I've always thought that using a laser to align guides sounds great until you get blanks that aren't laser straight. I wrap a lot of rods and eyeballing is still the best way to align guides because most blanks have a little variance along the bland somewhere.

I'm not familiar withe the H&H rods, but the blue on the Loomis rods is either dark blue Gudebrod #246 in size B or if it's a real dark blue it's Gudebrod cobalt blue #50 in size B.

Kerry does sell blanks. Try emailing him again, he tends to get distracted playing with new rods or talking to customers and doesn't check his email as often as he should. His lighter weight rods are also a medium fast action. I hope this helps but if you still have trouble getting hold of Kerry email me at tommystyx@hot

I've been wrapping rods for Kerry for about four years now and have had my hands on every rod he has made in that time. The best thing about Burkheimer rods is Kerry. He is willing to work with you and will design a blank to meet your particular needs if you can not find what you want in his line. Kerry is a perfectionist and his rods show it and on top of that he is one of the nicest pe

I like it when people say that a rod is custom only if it is built to a customer's specifications. I build rods for a living. My customers pick out the components and specify how they want the rods built. One of my customers is Lamiglas Rods another is Burkheimer Rods. Can I call the rods I build to their specs custom? Sometimes I build rods for people that don't know exactly what they want and

I come at this from a different perspective then most people on this site, I outwrap for a living. I wrap rods for three different companies and do from 100 to 150 rods a week. There is a learning curve to using power, but once you have it figured out things are much easier. I use power for all types of rods from ultra lite to surf. If I have to turn the rod more than three times I step
