Rob The factories line the guides up to the curve because the average Joe when he buys a rod shakes the rod then sites down it to see how straight it is. If the the rod has a curve to the right or left it doesn't look right to the average Joe, he will put that rod down and look at a straighter one. Mr. Joe knows nothing about the spine of a blank he just wants a straight rod. When the factor

Bob Thanks for the kind words about my profession. I've just got back to this thread and the interest in outwrapping amazes me. Some have wondered how I can sit for hours and wrap rods, my answer is I couldn't sit for hours doing their job, I just like wrapping rods. At the end of a day wrapping I can look at what I've done and feel good about helping build a quality product. I know some of yo

Mike I outwrap for a living. I work with four different companies. Like Todd says they pay $0.17 per tie off. Other companies pay about the same. I do from 100 to 150 rods per week. Some companies pick up and deliver the rod to me and some I pick up and deliver. They all have their standards, so the best way is wrap to the highest and get fast at it. The best paying rods are ones with trim w

Allen I wrap rods for a living so I have to be fast, I average 100 to 150 rods a week. My wrapper has the chuck mounted directly to the motor, no pully and no potentiometer, only a foot pedal. I use a bobbin to hold my thread so the spool is in my hand. There was a learning curve to it but it was short. If you only do a few rods a month then go as slow as you want but I get paid by the piece

David That's the original graphite that Loomis manufactured. After they came out with the IM6 they started to call it the Premier series. It was replaced by the GL2 series. Thomas F. Thornhill

In April at the rod builder's get together in Woodland, Washington there was a guy that had rods with a lazar in them. They glowed in the dark and when they were flexed they flashed. I can't remember his name but they were very cool. Thomas F. Thornhill

Bill I use a white china marker. You can make a small dot on the blank and wrap right over it with no trouble. Thomas F. Thornhill

Ed I outwrap for a living and grind guides for one of the companies I work with. I use a belt sander similar to the one you're looking at. Mine cost twice that much and I wish I'd seen this one. The belt doesn't move around and it works great for doing a lot of guides at a time. Some people use a grinding wheel and it works well for them. Use whatever works best for you. I used to use my drem

Scott I keep my pull through loops in my mouth. I know some people put a piece of yarn on the end of theirs so that they can find them easier. Thomas F. Thornhill

Mike Try looking at agate or agatine(sic) guides. I believe there are some with red rings. Thomas F. Thornhill

Charles Tagua Nuts are the intelligent choice for today's Artisan in search of a legal and sustainable Ivory substitute. Commonly know as Vegetable Ivory. The Tagua Nut is actually the dried seed pod of the Tagua Palm tree. These seeds are harvested in the rainforests of Ecuador. While it may take many years for them to form, the harvesting does no harm to the trees allowing for many years of

Rafael I outwrap for a living so my numbers are high. For the last fifteen years I've averaged between four and five thousand rods a year. That's just wrapping them not gluing handles and finishing them. Over the years I've probably done about five hundred custom rods. When you wrap as many rods as I do you get fast. This weekend I'm going to wrap twenty five Lamaglas rods and twenty five Roug

I outwrap for several rod makers and one of the big ones, I won't mention who, doesn't grind any guides with a ring size 8 or lower. They don't grind any recoil guides of any size. I ended up grinding the guides that I did for them, but other outwrappers just wrap them as they are.
