Hello, I am looking for a 7', two piece boat blank. It needs to be rated 15-30 or 20-40, and be composite or glass for durability. Does this exist or am I going to have to ferrule another blank? Thanks, Tim

Hello, I am building a heavy surf spinning rod that will be used with 50 lb braid knotted to 30 or 40 lb mono. The knot must be able to pass through guides without issue. I am guessing someone here has experience with this. I am considering 12 or 16 tip and running guides. Is that going to work? Thank you, Tim

This is a great thread. I fish locally for smallmouth, trout, and carp to keep my skills sharp for 6-8 saltwater trips per year, though I am starting to fish local lakes more regularly. I am currently wrapping an ip963f for local fishing, in an attempt to cast small lures further. In the brine, I jig for cod and pollack. Rods for this sort of jigging are my favorite to build. I like these

Hello, I am looking to build a rod for walking the shorelines of some reseviors I fish that do not allow wading. This is basically a hike in situation. Cost is not a concern. Balancing casting distance with versatility is my main concern. I am thinking 7'6" to 8' with shorter rear grip (7"). Fish species vary with the season, salmonoids in cool seasons, bass and pike when its warm. T

This may sound foolish, however, I have been able salvage a few slightly sticky builds by placing them in a hot sunny car for a few hours. Tim

If you would like a glass rod a batson spg843 or 844 is inexpensive and easy to spigot ferrule if you buy two blanks. I have done this a few times, it takes half an hour. You could make a two or three piece rod without much hassle. Janns has a 6' and 6' 6" two piece glass blank. Its pretty nice for the price. I use the longer one for swimming plugs and jigs when I fish areas that require

I made one out of a cheap rotisserie motor, mounted on a couple of pieces of 1x6. Attaching the rod is not too difficult. I epoxied a piece of square aluminum rod into the opening on the motor, so this turns like a spindle. I too build large diameter salt water rods, and I build up the diameter of the square rod until it fits tightly inside the rod butt. Then I wrap a few layers from spindle to r

Hello, I am having a hard time finding 7-8 foot, 2 piece composite blanks for 1/4-1/2 ounce lures, mainly jigs. I need them for an unusual purpose, basically freshwater pier fishing that involves swinging 2-3 pound fish. I have a batson sw967f, but it only covers the heavy end of things. I need something similar in a 4 power. Thank you, Tim

Hello, I am rewrapping a sw967f to be used for some surf, breakwater, and boat fishing for striped bass and bluefish. 90% of the time I planning on using 15lb test mono, and no shock leader. The lures will be fairly dense offerings, bucktails, diamond jigs, casting eggs, etc. I am thinking of going 40-25-16-10-10-10 then 10 tip. The reel will be a daiwa bg30, a reel with fairly large spool

Have you thought of using a Batson SW967? It is 8 feet, but could be trimmed from the butt to 7'6". It casts well but takes a beating too. I'm guessing that you are casting 1-4 danny, bottle, pencil, pikie type plugs, probably 2-3 ounces? Tim

Victor has suggested a good blank. I too have built on the crb spswb8xxxh. The xxh also makes a nice cod rod, and might be a bit better for Rhode Island, as you will be in 100-140 foot depths. The xxh also does bait well. If you jig with mono (which I do in depths of 250' or less), cutting a xxxh back to a 20 tip makes a great old school cod jigger. I lifted a 14 pound pollack into a boat with on

Would braid not fix that? I have set the hook on cod fish in 270' of water using a 6 foot rod and 30 pound test braided line. With the belly and angle in the line due to current, there may have been 360 feet of line out. I understand if mono is better for what you are doing, but if braid would work, it will solidly set a hook very far away from an angler. Tim

After reading the MM thread #3, I saw several people mentioned using 16 and 12 size guides as the first guide up from the reel on spinning rods. I have a spinning rod project in the works and I am thinking that this might be the way to go. The rod is for casting light plugs with braid. Have many people used guides this small for spinning rod stripper guides? Tim

Hello Sponsors, I have just learned that Batson used to make 2 piece e-glass rods in their SPG spin series. I am wondering if anyone has a few still lingering around in 6'6" or 7'? I don't think that they have been manufactured since 2006 or so, Thank you, Tim

If you need to fly, a batson travel sb843-3 or sb841-3. I went to the USVI a few years ago, lots of 1 to 5 pound groupers, jacks, and yellow tail snappers to be caught on lures. Had most of my fish on yozuri crystal minnows and L-Jacks. Bring flurocarbon line, the water is like glass. Tim

Has anyone used the Batson freshwater E-glass blanks? Recently I repaired a rod with a crushed male ferrule, and it has increased my confidence in altering blanks. As these rods are inexpensive, I am thinking of getting two of the 7 footers, and making a three piece blank with home made ferrules as an experiment. I was pretty impressed with how well the homemade ferrule worked, it was acutally mu

I travel frequently and like to take some rods with me everywhere. In my quest to find quality, fast action travel rods, I have found two german telescopic rods. They are fast action, snappy blanks, but the rings leave much to be desired. They are very large, heavy and placed on the end of each section. I am thinking of removing the factory rings and try to make some sliding guides out of old b

I just built an 8 foot, light action spinning rod with 11 guides, almost all of them are size 5 fly guides, and it works very well. Tim

I have always been interested in the relationship between action and the ability of a rod to get a decent distance with a certain lure. Right now, I fish with some rapala j-9s and j-11s, and am wondering what is a good rod for casting them? I generally like longer rods 7'6" and up. What about actions? Is fast or slow best for such light, low density lures? Tim

I am interested for the next rod in using it, i didn't use it for this rod as I tend to use cheap ultralight reels that I burn up quickly. The next rod will be build for a certain 2000 size Daiwa. I like the guides being equidistant and low to the blank near the tip.

I just finished an 8 foot light spinning rod, using a cut from the butt, 9 foot, 6 weight 4 piece fly rod blank. Surprisingly, it works great with small lures. It is wrapped using a modified forhan equal distance system, with 11 guides. 8 of them are 5 inches apart, then 6-7-8 for the last three. Ring sizes were 20-10-7-6-5-5 out to the tip. Little 1/8th ounce spoons fly away from the rod's ti

Hello, Has anyone used fuji lowrider guide sets with the very small rings? I am thinking of using one on a spinnning rod that I use frequently with nothing other than braid, and I have a set lying around. I have seen similar rods on plat.co.jp for squid and sea bass.
