Rod tests

I just finished an 8 foot light spinning rod, using a cut from the butt, 9 foot, 6 weight 4 piece fly rod blank. Surprisingly, it works great with small lures. It is wrapped using a modified forhan equal distance system, with 11 guides. 8 of them are 5 inches apart, then 6-7-8 for the last three. Ring sizes were 20-10-7-6-5-5 out to the tip. Little 1/8th ounce spoons fly away from the rod's tip. The grip is split, and very light. Even more surprising is the authority and even crispness of the rod.

I travel frequently and often am on the road for work, so I am thinking of adding another, uncut rod to my arsenal made from an eight-weight 9 foot blank, and a similar formula for the guides, any insight would be welcome

Tim

Try setting up the guides with the New Guide Concept as outlined in the library page here. That could possibly net you another 3% in casting distance, if you're interested that little bit extra. What you have now is certainly better than the old Cone of Flight System, but even this can be tweaked just a tad to get you a little more, if you want it.

I am interested for the next rod in using it, i didn't use it for this rod as I tend to use cheap ultralight reels that I burn up quickly. The next rod will be build for a certain 2000 size Daiwa. I like the guides being equidistant and low to the blank near the tip.

That's part of the New Guide Concept as well, only the first few nearest the reel would change. Any difference would be very slight, but if you're going for all you can get...
