Sliding rings for telescopic rod?

I travel frequently and like to take some rods with me everywhere. In my quest to find quality, fast action travel rods, I have found two german telescopic rods. They are fast action, snappy blanks, but the rings leave much to be desired. They are very large, heavy and placed on the end of each section. I am thinking of removing the factory rings and try to make some sliding guides out of old blank stock with a small guide wrapped on it that will allow me to collapse the rod. it will also allow me to place guides where I want them. Has anyone tried this?

Tim,, I believe everyone is thinking about this one. You have thrown a curve. Personally I think it is a hoss cat of an idea, IF ! the little guide sleeves don't create shear points. To me, that is the biggest concern, if there is one. If I did it ,,,,, I would make the "guide sleeves" just slightly longer than the guide foot and wrap and finish the whole sleeve. Also, when I removed the metal rings I would wrap twice the id of each female section, right on the end ,like you would wrap a ferrule. I can't wrap the sleeves too tight because they probably would not fit where I originally intended for them to. Same thing applies to wrapping a ferrule, don't wrap them too tight. When everyone gets through thinking about this idea, I am sure you could get a lot of good ideas and opinions. I doubt anyone has ever done this. Re: Sliding rings for telescopic rod?
