I use a thin silver mylar tape as an underwrap. It's very thin and weighs almost nothing. Then I wrap red over that and finish without color preserver. It gives a nice candy apple effect. I think you can still get the mylar from anybody who handles Merrick's products or even many fly fishing shops. That's where I got my last roll.

Mine did and does the same thing and I've been using it for a few years. No problems. I think it is coming from the end bearings but really don't know for certain. But it works fine. When it starts making the noise ALL the time then you might have problems.

The force on the tip will not be the same as the force on the angler at the other end of the rod.

Sorry. I just didn't like my post being taken so far out of context. Won't happen again.

I did NOT say that. YOU made assumptions that are not correct and continue to put words in my mouth. MY INTENT WAS CLEAR. I WAS TALKING ABOUT THE EPOXY FINISH AND NOTHING MORE. I WAS VERY PLAIN AND SPECIFIC ABOUT THIS. WHAT CAN'T YOU UNDERSTAND ABOUT THAT. I NEVER SAID ANY OF THE THINGS YOU'RE ACCUSING ME OF SAYING. YOUR CONCLUSIONS ARE SO FAR OFF BASE IT'S NOT EVEN FUNNY. I own 4 Winston

I agree 100%. I just didn't appreciate having other people put words in my mouth. I'm sure that when it's done to them they don't like it either. This has to be a two way street. If they don't want it done to them, then they shouldn't do it to others.

Okay so you're saying that 90% of custom rod builders build a terrible rod and should never expect to be able to compete with what the factories turn out. I know you didn't say that but as a reader that's what I got out of it. Two can play this silly game. If you get to put words in my mouth then I get to put them in yours.

If you did start one, it would probably be a great one. Judging by the magazine, this site and the rod expo.

I made a comment on the finish on factory rods. ONLY and SPECIFICALLY. You said that I claimed that factory rods are substandard. I did not say that. I never said that I picked apart factory rods. I never said that factory rods aren't up to the job for which they're made. I never said that all factory rods were poorly assembled or poor quality. You said all that, not me. So please don't put word

Please don't put words in my mouth. I didn't say any of what you just accused me of and I don't appreciate your attempts to make me look bad. I only said that the finish on factory rods isn't very good. Most all of them have football shaped finish jobs with dry areas here and there. I can do better and so can most custom rod builders. My point is that the finishing proceedure they use is not

This is going to be way, way, way out there, but I bet that Neal might be able to shed some light on this mystery. Anybody thought about calling him???

I wonder if this is why the factory finish jobs look so bad? Only problem with doing it like they do it is that your finish will look like theirs. I've never seen a really good finish job on a factory rod and that includes the likes of Sage, Loomis and all the rest of the so called premium rods. Winston is among the worst I've ever seen.

NONE of the guides on the butt area are going to load until you put enough load on the blank to get it to flex that far back. You can't hang an ounce off the tip and then say something's wrong because the first 180 degrees guide isn't loading. It's not supposed to load until the load gets transferred that far back on the blank. Keep hanging more ane more weight on the blank and I bet you it will

What the?????? The SCIV and SCV are as good as any rod blanks out there at any price. Try one and you' won't be disappointed. The SCV are very fast actions so you'll either love them or hate them. I've never found the Loomis GLX blanks to be brittle. If they were then Loomis wouldn't be able to keep them on the market and they've been out there for about ten or more years now. But they do c

I had a thought on the original topic just now. Take the club that is starting false rumors about the attendance figures at Tom's show and look at their last seven national conclaves. Take the attendance from ALL of seven and add them up. All seven combined still wouldn't give them even half the attendance that Tom got in just this most recent Rod Expo!!! You are talking about a group that had

If you call and ask Sage, they'll tell you that the white dots they put on the blank are there to mark the straightest axis, not the spine. I'd go with them or sight down it and find the straightest axis you can.

Right, I was going to ask Art what in the **** did spine have to do with a spiral wrap? I never bother with rod spine anymore. I find the straightest axis and build along that. It's the most powerful axis anyway although I know it's only a small amount of difference in power between that and the softext axis. But I build on the spine and with the spiral wrap I don't have to worry about rod tw

Paul you asked a question elsewhere about using sanding blocks for making grips or rings. Where you asked is a good place for getting fish fry recipes but not so good for rod building info. Yes you can make grips from them. They will be heavier than regular cork because they are composition cork. Granulated and rejoined with adhesive. Use a hole saw and drill your rings to whatever diameter yo

I'm sure the ones I got were crooked. I can tell just by looking and they look like boomarangs. I'd call that crooked. Last time I talked with anybody down there all the Shikari stuff was still in OK and nothing had been sent to WA. The ATC blanks being shipped now are imports. Shikari is dead.

Cheap oriental made blanks. Do NOT confuse them with the old Shikaris. Not even close. I bought two and will probably cut them up for reamer stock. Crooked, crooked, crooked. I guess I could use them for casting around corners. I have been told that the old Shikari stuff is still in OK or where ever. The ATC stuff is not Shikari and it's not built on the same mandrels. I'd stick with Batson

Understood. Billy you and I talked for ten minutes either last year or the year before, I can't remember which. My wife was with me. You are the one with the weird manchu looking beard thing going on aren't you? I didn't buy a book and didn't spend much time because I don't do much in the way of cross wraps and your booth was covered up on Saturday. I still didn't get around to everything and we

My third trip and it just gets better and better. I was really impressed with the show this year. Very classy and tons of people. Hats off to the speakers and cameras in the seminars this year. Now a question, it sure looks like the show keeps getting bigger every year. I wonder how much can it grow? I think you could get more booths in the hall but how many more people? Or is that even someth

Guess that explains what happened to my last two posts! Didn't think I broke any rules but just warning people about dishonest dealers I'd think you'd want to warn them about suspect organizations and individuals. Seems like the kind of service you'd want to provide the rod builders at large.

Doubt any two companies would measure them the same way. No set of universal standards as far as I know. Call or e-mail the company and ask. That's about all you can do.
