I'd have to wonder just how much cushion something as thin as A size thread is going to add. And using larger thread would make the rod cumbersome IMO. Maybe just an outer coating of the Permagloss?

The Renzetti chart is great and you can use a dry-erase pen to make more sets of lines if you want. But don't read the instructions that come with it unless you want to be utterly confused and headache ridden for a couple of days!!!

Rodmaker had a great article on how make spigots and make them better than any of the factory rods have. I had to replace one on an older JKFisher rod and did the way Ralph showed and it's holding up great for the customer. But I think I would use the outer sleeve ferrule type for actually making a two piece rod. I just made a spigot for that one rod because that's what it already had and it was

My experience is that Rod Bond takes a full day to cure. At least a full day. It never gets totally hard but always has just a little give which I think makes it good for rod building and attaching things like rubber butt caps. But I still wait a full 24 hrs before doing any work on parts that I've used it on.

I put whatever grip material on the rod that my customer wants. I have samples and show them what's available. We talk about pros and cons and then go from there.

I'd say there is probably a reason why the article recommended using polyester instead of epoxy. My main concern would be getting the epoxy turned and buffed up to a high gloss. From what I've read you can't do it very well. All the knowledge you need about using polyester resins was in the article. I tried it and got pretty good results and I'm a hack. If I can do it anybody can.

The site is new. The old one worked fine. The new one is still under construction on a few pages. Doesn't everyone think Andy knows this???

If spine was important wouldn't the factories that make the blanks be telling us to spine them??? They tell us not to alter the finish and to wrap the ferrules and that sort of thing but I've never seen a header card or warranty tag that said that we must spine the blank. If the people that make the dam things don't feel it's important I don't think we need to worry about it much. I bought a

If they are flat on the bottom and you can easily wrap the thread the thread up on the foot then they are okay as is. But if you can't easily wrap the thread up on them or they don't sit perfectly flat then yes you will need to do a little prep work. Try one and see.

Bass fishermen make casts from all sorts of positions and angles. You would never be able to position the spine in the casting "plane" as there isn't any single casting plane that these guys use! I always thought it odd that we would take a blank and bend and push on it and then put the guides in a certain place. When you go fishing the only thing the rod feels is the weight on the l

Do you have other CTS models or just some surf models? I'm in upstate New York. Is this only for wholesale customers?

Believe it or not but they seem to hold up pretty well. I've only had two of them out there for about a year now but I don't think they are any more scratched or scarred than any of the solid black ones I've used.

What I mean is, you get help here for nothing. There is no charge. At other places you are expected to join and pay a fee as they say that's the only way you can get good help and meet other rod builders. Guess you poked a hole in that one! Seriously, you can get whatever help you need here. If you can make it to the International Rod Builders show in Feb. next year, you should come on out. Yo

I'm glad your keeping the door prize thing a true door prize and not a raffle of any kind. Not just because I've managed to win something two years running, but because I've been to local CCA and DU banquets up here and the same small group of guys seems to win most everything. Not saying they are rigged but when you raffle or @#$%& something off the people who can afford to bid the highest or bu

Why would you say that these are not as good as Loomis or St. Croix? I've built six or seven of them now and every one of them has been straight, light, powerful and very nicely finished. I don't have any complaints and none of my customers do either. IMO these are GREAT rod blanks.

Any time you send American dollars abroad you make this country poorer. The trade deficit with oriental countries among others only sends our wealth abroad and then those countries come back with those dollars and buy up this Country. Same with illegal aliens sending money home to their familes. Those American dollars are used by their governments to buy up America. Already 30% of this Country is

A year ago I was using the IM feature of a fishing website to chat with another user there. The next day we both got a pretty nasty e-mail from one of the people who owned the site about something one of us had said in the supposedly private IM messages we sent back and forth. How did he have any idea what we were saying? I think we all know. The whole point of the IM features is so that somebody

Rich you didn't mention how much it cost you to make all these friends and have all these great experiences. I've been told that you have to pay dues and belong to a club in order to make and enjoy lasting friendships in rod building, LOL! People with common interests usually get along fine and this site is just an opportunity for them to find and meet each other. I know a lot more about rod b

Derek why not just buy a couple yourself and donate them to your library? I think that's what this program is all about. Also I would think that the rod building manufacturers and dealers would be behind this program 100% since it ends up helping their business in the long run. I was surprised that none of them had lifted a finger to help. What are they thinking?

Build 25 rods per year and sell about 20 of those each year. Love doing it. Saltwater and river bass rods. Odd combination but that is what I get requests for. Mostly guys at work and then the friends they tell after they get their rods.

$45 on the rod and $65 if you just want to buy the grip. I bought one a year ago. Didn't care for it after I had it on the rod. I'm not sure what the point really is now. On a longer rod you wouldn't hold it that far back anyway. It's like a sheath that covers the back of the reel seat so you can hold the grip down low nearer the seat. I found that uncomfortable with or without the cork sheath.

It could have already been done. Suppose IF Tom made this site accessible only to Rodmaker subscribers, IF the National Rod Builders Show was only accessible to Rodmaker subscribers. That would constitute an organization with a ton of members.

Hopefully he'll become a sponsor of this site and help pay for the free advertising that he's gotten and which has sold a ton of those DVDs for him. Seems fair.

Bend the American Tackle version just a little and it stays bent. Bend the Fuji a lot and it springs back into shape. If Fuji is using money to make their product seem better I don't know where its going. I haven't seen any advertisements for Fuji products in something like 10 years.

IMO the Fujis are much much much better all around. But they are also much much much more expensive. Take your pick.

Long time and happy Flex Coat user. Then last year bought LS Supreme Hi-Build and really really really like it. Then bought some Threadmaster at the BIG show and like it just as well if not better. After seeing the product release of Bullards reintroduced Diamond II in the past issue of Rodmaker, I ordered some and have to say I like it the very best. Seems to have the best qualities of all finis

I thnk he's asking about something to seal cork with not to color preserve thread with. I'd go with Andy's suggestion and use a water based urethane for my cork sealer if you're in a pinch.
