Has anyone used the West System as a rod finish over thread? I have to mix some up to finish a handle that I have made and I know that there will be alot left over. Just wondering if it is ok to use over thread. My thinking is yes because if it stays clear over sleeving then it shoud do the same over thread.

When my belt cracked I went to Ace Hardware and bought a big O ring that is the same size as the one that came with the unit. I didn't have the time to order one from the sponsors. The one I bought works just fine.

Thanks for the replys. Not on any medication though for this. The blank was purchased in High Poing at the swampland booth. I know that every once in a while there can be a problem with some blanks so I am not to concerned with that. Just wanting to get started on the next build that hopefully will go alot better.

Just finished a new rod with composite grips and micro guides. Took awhile to put those litte booggers on. Applied finsh and done. Went out side to test cast the finished product and on the third cast the rod tip broke 12 inches from the top. Must of had a bad spot on the blank. O well. Stripped it down and am going to start another one. Live and learn.

I know that this subjuct has come up many times but I have a question to ask. When purchasing a lathe is it necessary to get one that has indexing on it? Looking on line to try and find a good but inexpensive lathe to turn the foam cores. Any suggestion would be helpful.

Year before last at the Big Show I believe that Ken Preston taught a class and said that he uses this stuff instead of color preserver. He said that it works great for that application. I need to try it my self. It seems that you can use it on almost anything dealing with rod building.

A quick ? for those who have used this product. I just started on a handle for a rod of mine. So far I have only used one coat of the west system. It looks as if it might need a 2nd coat but also it needs to be sanded down alittle because the epoxy settled on one side of rod. Is it better to sand before 2nd coat or after? thanks for any response.

Thanks for the resposes. It really helps out alot. Do you think that it would be easier to pour say a 25-36 in core and cut to length rather than pour 3 12.5 in cores at one time. My thinking is that because of the time issue that pouring one verse 3 at one time would be better..

For those of you that have made foam cores, here is a question? If you are making a 12 in foam core who many cc's for parts a and b do you use? I have only try this once and used 10 cc each and it seems like that was not enough. Just trying to save some time and product from waste. If any one would care to expand on this topic. thanks again for all your help.

For those of you that are using this product, I contacted Solar today to ask about coverage of the West product. They told me that one quart of product of 207 will cover 200 to 250 linear feet of 1 in carbon sleeves. You should be able to figure out your cost of making these if you can figure out the cost of making 1 foot of foam cores.

Has anyone used this for carbon sleeves? I called Fiberglasssupply.com today and they said that this product will be clearer than West 207. I see that it only cost about 12.00 less then West. Just looking for some feed back.

Has anyone used the 206 or 205 instead of the 207? Just wondering how it might turn out.

Has anyone found an epoxy that will work as well as West 207? I am trying to find something local so I can get it tomorrow. I was thinking that Lowe's or Home Depot might have something.

The article that Andy Dear wrote says to use high strength low viscosity laminating epoxy (west systems or similar). Not sure if that is the 5 min or not.

What laminating epoxy do you use on the sleeve? I have the West system 5 min epoxy and it did not work very well. After putting flex coat 5 min epoxy on the core and sliding on the sleeve, I let it dry. Then mixed the West 5 min epoxy and applied on top of sleeve. The epoxy did not apply smoothly and it ended up being foggie. I reapplied a 2nd coat to fill in gaps that were missed on first

I agree with Alex. I talked to Steve for a very long time about his rods and I am amazed at the fact that he shared all the info of his rods. For sure the craftsman in this trade are not stingy with sharing information that will help with our builds. I think that is what this sport is about.

79. Ooops?
Has anyone ever mistakenly applied flex coat epoxy inplace of flex coat finish? I have several bottles where the labels have wiped off and I mixed up a batch of what I thought was finish. So far so good. Not sure what the results will be after it dries.

I have a friend that makes signs out of vinyl. I have had him make my logo out of this. You just apply to blank and put finish over it. Not sure if you can us PG because it might melt the vinyl. Very cost effective. I would go to a sign shop and have them design and cut one out.

Thanks for the info. Maybe I need to get the Ultimate Epoxy from Lamar Fishing so I can be working on the grips now instead of waiting.

I was reading on the back of my Rod Bond and it said to let stand for 24 hours. What is the shortest period of time to wait on cork rings to dry before shaping them?

What do you use to clean up Rod Bond? Not sure if I should use Alcohol or just soap and water. thanks for response.

I am trying to rebuild a factory rod and I noticed that when I took of the guides that there was scotch tape or some sort of tape over the guide feet under the wrapping. Just wondering if anyone out there do this or is it just for factory rod makers? Also is there any benefit from doing this?

Andy, Do you have plans to make thread master in a high build formula? Just wondering. If not I can continue doing several applications to get it to look like a high build product.

I just went out and test casted the set up that I have now and it seem to cast just fine. But looking at it, it still seems like to many guides.

I am building a 8 foot surf rod for spinning reel. I am needing advice on guide spacing and the amount of guides to use. My reel seat is starts at 14" from bottom of rod. My first guide that I am using is a size 50 perfection wire guide that is placed right now at 43 1/5" from tip top and 24" from real seat. The other guides that I have is a 40,30,25,20,16,12 and 10. Do I need
